  • The popular and older Triang/Hornby coaches with a painted and modified exterior finish which brings them to life and makes them look more like scratch-built models. Full of character and charm.

You are totally right about the charm and character of old models. They are not accurate but they were made for use on a layout: details wouldn't easily break off, details were exaggerated and thus better visible, length was often not to scale which made them better fit on our unrealistically measured railroads, etc. And most of all: they don't cost an arm or a leg and are ideal material for weathering, upgrading or kitbashing. 😊

A whole other hobby by itself an a very enjoyable aspect. One more reason this is the best hobby as it has literally everything.

I only looked in to these carriages after visiting SVR a month back. The teak coaches were running on the line - there were actually 2 rakes of teaks running that day and a rake of buffet cars in the siding. I've been to a few heritage railways and the teak carriages at SVR are something else! Beautiful both inside and out and I'm pretty sure they have won awards for their renovation of them too. For anyone who hasn't visited, SVR is a real experience and absolutely worth it IMHO.

They were not running the day I was there but I walked down the platform and had a good look. They are indeed stunning.

That's an excellent result. I also only brush paint models., besides not having space for a spray gun, I enjoy the relaxation of brush painting.
Nothing beats the character of classic model trains.

Glad you like it! I tried it once with Burnt Umber oil paint myself. It was OK but like you said this method is better.

Thanks for showing this, really useful, I like your philosophy of not going into the realms of super modelling but what looks right to you, I got back into the hobby in the early eighties thanks to some articles in Railway Modeller by a guy called Monty Wells and he did sort of upgrades, for example taking the Triang/Hornby 37 and giving it split headcode boxes, his idea was that the model must mean something to you it must strike a chord, that gave me confidence to restore stuff that was damaged or unloved, maybe add some detail or even refinish and kind of make it your own, the problem I have with some current models is yes the extra detail is great but you can't take stuff out of the box without bits dropping off!

It does look more like aged timber than the original for sure. I do miss the look of the lining though, but I don't know what they look like in real life, living on the other side of the planet as I do. Just one small thing, you have the seating unit in the wrong way round. 😊

What a very informative and interesting video. Yes I fully agree with you about what you say about the LNER model Gresley teak coaches. They look 100 % better after you have repainted them with your method. Yes I remember seeing Gresley teak coaches on the North Yorkshire Moores Railway and the finish of the coaches are just like your coaches. I am not sure how many LNER teak coaches the NYMR have but they look splendid when you see a rake of them together. I live in Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire and often pop over to the railway. I am 68 now and i spent most of my working life on our railways and would do it again. Thank you once again for a great video and well done Sir. 👍🚂

Very nice! Like you I go for character rather than strict detail and these older models really lend themselves to this approach. I have done something similar with my teaks - although I've another train yet to do - and the colour I used was Citadel Serpia. You've given me an idea, namely if I use the colour you use as well as the Serpia then I might be able to give the impression of the individual panels. I don't know, but it's worth a try. Thanks for the video; it's the kind I really like.

Thank you. The layouts and models featured in magazines and books from the past are far more inspiring compared to the highly realistic modelling of today. They had individuality too. You Tube in many ways liberated the hobby from the perfectionists. The individual panel tones is a good idea as you see it a lot in prototype photos.

What a transformation! In the end it looked like you had as much paint on your hand as on the model - been there done that. Seriously though, terrific result and the rake looks great on the layout. Art meets modelling, the recreation of a feeling/experience in a 3d miniature. Great stuff.

At least you kept it on your hands. When I do a bit of painting I tend to leave a trail of paint showing my movements about the house for the drying time of said paint. Hence my personal preference for quick drying pigments 😁

100% with you on both the 3ft rule and the character factor. Like you my models are for running. I have a number of Hornby Dublo 4MT tanks in both 2 and 3 rail, and I genuinely prefer them to the modern (for me at least) Bachmann version. As for my Dublo Duchesses : Atholl and Abercorn, they just have that little extra something newer models lack. My biggest modelling influence was without any doubt an article in a very dog eared copy of « Triang Railways: the first Ten Years » I bought as a teenager in the early ‘80’s. Artist Terence Cuneo wrote a piece on weathering models. For him the secret was contrast and making the models look heavy… Worth checking out…
The coaches look wonderful. Mine will get the same treatment without a doubt.

Watching now here in Toronto. I agree 100% with all of your comments. My trains range from Triang Princesses to a Hornby Pendolino(not working at the moment) and everything in between.
All of my locos are DC as I began buying it might have been just before DC.
As I continued buying stuff the popularity of DC increased but, having a young family I couldn’t afford the more expensive models and equipment.
I have a fairly large collection which I continue to service and run.
I am always interested in improving what I have and I have replaced the plastic wheels that came with the coaches with metal ones. This improved their running and I no longer experience derailments.
Demonstrating the removal of the body is very helpful as I know some have trouble with that.
Is there another paint that you would suggest?
I think I will have a go at one after watching this but with fear and trepidation🤣
Fortunately I agree with the 3’-0 rule
Thanks so much for sharing this, I know how much effort it takes.
What is the paint number? There is a store not far from where I am, I will head over there.
    And I love 00Bill
    Regards
    Charlie

Could you please put the description of the paint you used in the description box. Speaking as a rivet counter, that model is 1000x better. Just tone down the roofs a little. I love what you have done and I think I need to try it for my self.
