Yeah, bayonetta is more a rival to DmC. There are plenty of other games Bullet Witch is closer to, but it certainly doesn't seem to be "similar" to Bayonetta in any way other having a female witch protagonist.

I'd say the more appropriate entry vs Overwatch would have been Battleborn. Battleborn was arguably the more comprehensive and complete game at launch, but the amount of Blizzard simpery among gamers (at the time) and the huge buzz surrounding Overwatch's female character roster and its presence in fan made porn kept OW firmly at the forefront.

Overwatch killed Battleborn. I'm sure everyone remembers when they were about to come out. The developer (or someone) of Battleborn tried to set it up as being Overwatch's biggest rival, and then when the games came out, they ended up not actually being super similar. Regardless, since they were coming out around the same time, the developer made gamers feel like they had to choose between the two, and the rest is history.
I can't help but wonder if Battleborn wasn't hyped up and immediately sent out to die if having a game like that around might cause Blizzard to think twice about all the crap they're pulling with Overwatch 2.

In due time, EQ2 started changing to become more solo friendly in an effort to copy WoW's formula. Here's one: Duke Nukem Forever Vs Half-Life, with HL being the winner.
Some of you might already know this, but Duke Nukem Forever has a semi-playable version of the original idea, complete with tentacle SWAT members, hookers, a dark and dingy Vegas, a donkey ride and a few playable scripted scenes. HOWEVER, Half-Life 1 was released while Duke was still in development and, upon seeing the success and praise of Half-Life, the developers decided they too wanted to be more story drive and atmospheric (even though they already were. Plus, they wanted drop shadows, which Half-Life didn't have, no idea why).
As a direct result, this postponed Duke as the project was entirely scrapped. As a result, new Unreal engines came out, causing more complete restarts, games developed at a fast pace, causing MORE restarts, and Duke sank multiple companies for a game which, when released, was nothing more than a gym douche FPS shooter and not the babe saving manliest man alive kicking alien arse we loved.
Had they just stuck to their guns and not tried to copy Half-Life, DNF could've been released over a DECADE earlier and, even if the series died there, it would've been remembered as a great game. Instead, the existence of Half-Life sent the development into free fall, completely destroying Duke's image and producing a game which only has one good point: The DLC which actually feels like a Duke game.
This also robbed us of Blonde Bombshell, who you might know from Ion Fury, who would've been Duke's AI sidekick and was positively received by fans at the time. She would later be replaced by Dylan, the Gears Of War joke who everybody hated cos he WOULDN'T. SHUT. UP.

I remember when we had a slew of "Halo Killers". Killzone being the big one because it was Sony exclusive vs Microsoft. But there was also Project Snowblind (which, at one point, was supposed to be related to Deus Ex). Ironically, what killed Halo wasn't a sci-fi shooter and it wasn't even expected to. Call of Duty 4 did modern shooters, something unique at the time where we either got Sci-Fi shooter or WW2 (and boy were there tons of WW2, there were years where multiple titles were released on the PC, it was that popular).
So, if you ever want to kill a popular title, don't emulate it. People tend to stick with the originals. Chart off in your own direction. Give gamers something they haven't had before. Or something they rarely get. COD4 wasn't the first modern setting but it did do it right, similar to how Gears didn't do cover shooting first (Winback on the 64 and Kill.Switch beat it to the punch) but it did do it well (also helps that Epic Games poached one of the devs from Kill.Switch to help iron out the cover shooting kinks. Also, I'm using too many parenthesis).

Bungie made Marathon for Mac computers, which at the time were largely an afterthought in the PC and console driven gaming market. So Doom outsold Marathon, not so much because of any rivalry but because it had access to a much wider market. And yet when Microsoft made their own console, who did they turn to? The makers of Doom? No, they bought Bungie, and thus the fingerprints of Marathon are all over Halo. Doom didn’t kill Marathon, it caused it to reincarnate into something even bigger than Doom.

Its genuinely mad that Halo has been utter dogshit since Reach yet Sony still havent properly tried to launch a sci fi FPS that can rival it, having given up on Killzone (which was guff). Halo Infinite was absolutely rotten yet wins by default because there is zero competition or alternatives, wtf!

If I remember, Too human was the pet project of Silicon Knights, and was at one point intended for a Gamecube release, but then cancelled... Silicon Knights was the company that made Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, which to this day remains exclusive to the Nintendo Gamecube. Despite Nintendo having not done anything with the IP in ages, Nintendo continues to renew their ownership of the IP to keep it from the hands of the competition. this after Silicon Knights has gone the way of the dodo.
Here's a fun one. The different versions of Gauntlet Dark Legacy. On the most basic and vaguest of level they were all the same game, but the Gamecube version was seen as the best and most definitive version from the classic franchise made by Midway games. As it felt the most polished of the versions.
The Dreamcast version was really more a port of Gauntlet Legends.
The Xbox was... Shoddy to say the least...
The PS2 version's biggest problem was you couldn't save your acquired magical weapons for other stages.
The Gamecube version had 1 revision which fixed the bugs that plagued the release version. The revision remains THE definitive version of Gauntlet Dark Legacy, and remains the BEST Gauntlet game EVER, even despite Atari getting the license for it, and making a rather lackluster PC port. And Atari got it after Midway collapsed and splintered off after the absolute FAILURE that was Seven Sorrows on PS2 and XB, which was banking on the online support... Seven Sorrows was by far the WORST Gauntlet game EVER. At least the Atari developed Gauntlet game on PC had a somewhat retro feel, and gave a Diablo kinda vibe.

Actually the old Apple Macintosh computers were more gamer focused than the early PC's. It's only these days with the modern Macs where that's the case. It made sense for games to be exclusive to Macintosh's.

As for Halo well...I'm pretty sure 343 is trying to kill it themselves and they do not require outside help (which is a shame because Halo ODST and Reach were some of my favorite FPS games)

    - I remember a lot of vitriol towards EA from a good number of fans (myself included) for yanking the NFL license away when 2K started taking dominating them in the market with a cheaper and better alternative. I haven't bought a football game since it happened, and even didn't take advantage of having a friend who worked there that could've gotten me a free copy of Madden every year for the near decade he worked there haha.
    - Yeah I was never aware that there was any rivalry between Bayonetta and Bullet Witch. I remember BW and actually kinda looking forward to it until it got such a middling reception, and by the time Bayonetta came out I'd all but forgotten it. I would've sooner said Bayonetta had had a rivalry with Devil May Cry, given the Hideki Kamiya connection, the obvious similarities in combat, flow, and over-the-top style of presentation, and DMC4 being released the year prior. But of course neither one of them suffered because of it, so it wouldn't belong on this list.
    - Oh man I remember Overwatch vs LawBreakers...and Overwatch vs Paragon...and Overwatch vs Battleborn. Pretty much Overwatch vs every hero shooter around the time haha. I actually felt sorry for Battleborn because I dug the design, and LawBreakers because it was supposed it actually looked really fun.
    - I really liked he concept of Too Human, but my hopes for it waned once it entered development hell haha. Still hoped that it would be good, but wasn't surprised at all that it ended up being disappointing. I actually wasn't hyped at all for Mass Effect so that was a pleasant surprise on release.
    - Killzone and Haze were essentially cautionary tales that taught subsequent FPS games that they should never, ever want to be referred to as "Halo killers" haha. Killzone was at least solid enough to get sequels that improved pretty dramatically along the way though.
    - Likening asking comic book fans to choose between Marvel and DC to asking them to choose their favorite child is not always apt. Lots of comic book fans will all too willingly tell you their preference and fight you for disagreeing with them haha.

When it comes to mmos i would srghe final fantasy 14 is the best and sets a much higher standard. The game itself allow you to play as on character and just swap to a different class as need and automatically changes stats to match, each class levels separately, and instead of having to by a major story expansion every time they want to add ne w content they just do a mass patch and add the new quests in reserving expansions for entire new regions

Hell Overwatch killed Gearboxs Battleborn more than Lawbreakers.
Given Gearboxs reputation with FPSs and given that it was coming out in the same month but weeks before OW it should have had the edge. But Gearboxs muddy marketing, Pitchforks lousy promoting, and the confusion of not wanting to call it a "hero shooter" but it's own new genre. Game was damn near dead on arrival even though OW release was weeks away.
