    Looks like a very low snow year, but still great to see again. The Headwall, the Chute, Hillman's Highway, left Gully, Right Gully. Good memories in the 1970's on May 24th weekend.

    How did you assess avalanche risk for this trip?

    • @andrew.drummond
      @andrew.drummond  2 роки тому +4

      I always check the local avalanche forecast and the observatory forecast before heading up to the mountain. If possible we speak to any other skiers on the way up to gain more knowledge (i.e. what did you see / ski), then we make our own observations and assess the conditions. This is a very personal thing where my level of risk tolerance might not match up with another skier's risk level (higher or lower). I keep perspective on the day that we can always come back if there's conditions we're not comfortable with. If there are any red flags we call it a day (active wind loading, recent avalanches, new snow becoming an avalanche problem, rapid warming, and signs of snow instability).

    I've climbed every trail on Washington in every season except great gulf. I've done 8 solo nighttime descents 5 during winter.....
    I'm all set with skiing tucks. The video doesn't do justice of just how steep it is, not to mention the periodic avalanche danger.
    Stay safe out there!

    Thanks, love your videos! I’m trying to get into backcountry ski touring and I am trying to find some beginner/intermediate trails to do this spring. Do you have any suggestions? I also saw your video where you drove up the mount Washington auto road and skied the snowfields. Do you think there will be enough snow this year to do that? It looks really fun! Thanks!

    • @megan2349
      @megan2349 2 роки тому

      It'll be a while until the Auto road opens. Unless you hike up, there's no way up currently. There's some snow in the ravines until June most years but this year there's less of a snowpack and warmer temps so it may not happen.

    • @lincolas5310
      @lincolas5310 2 роки тому

      @@megan2349 On some years, don’t the summit snowfields still have snow after the auto road opens? I broke my arm and missed the whole ski season so I want to ski once more before the season ends. I knew we got less snow than average but is it a lot less? I was planning on driving up and skiing the snowfields in May. Thanks!

      @@lincolas5310 There is nothing at Tuckerman's that qualifies as beginner. You could be in an "intermediate" area and have sudden changes to double or even triple diamond. Best to buy a ticket at Wildcat during the regular season and admire it from afar.

      @@markfitzgerald1192 I am an advanced skier and can ski black diamonds and double black diamonds with moguls in the resort. Im just new to backcountry want to start small and slowly do harder and harder stuff. I have heard that lobster claw is one of the easiest routes in tuckermans. Does it have around a 40 degree slope? I have also heard that the summit snowfields are not too steep. Is this true? I’m just trying to get information before i get up there. Thanks!

    • @markfitzgerald1192
      @markfitzgerald1192 2 роки тому +1

      @@lincolas5310 Decades ago I would have known which one "Lobster Claw" is, but I can tell you 40 degrees is steeper than you will find at any lift serviced area....maybe there is 45- or so for 10 or 15 feet somewhere....nothing continuous.
      The thing to know though is that things are relatively much less steep at the base of the bowl....but often the snow is really lumpy, As you climb it gets steeper and steeper. you can stop when you have gone far enough.
      Myself I would never ski down something I had not climbed up.
      The upper snow fields are tame by comparison and often have perfect corn in the spring. Try not to damage the amazing plants in the alpine gardens.
      Being a "purist" I would not drive to the top. If you do be very careful not to go over the lip or down the right gully..... stay in the snow fields or similar terrain.
      There is other skiing that you can see from the hermit lake area. Dodges drop is perhaps the steepest, but Hillmans highway and lower snowfield are contenders too. Again Nothing there is easy.
