I purchased a ‘portable bearing greaser’ when I had my defender. It was such a pleasure to use, I made it an annual Christmas break job! Remove, clean in petrol and re grease! Lovely job

Totally agree with using Timken bearings, already had had them fitted on the front of mine, but when I did the back, I couldn't get hold of Timken so went for Gen Rover ones, but couldn't even tighten them up fully let alone torque them! Luckily my local mini man had some and he fitted them, after saying anything else is crap! Luckily I got my money back from Mini Sport because they knew him 😊
The non Timken items seem to be so hit and miss. I've fitted some before and not had a problem (Probably too loose with hindsight), but I have also fitted some which are too tight.
Nice informative video, worth noting that although they are taper roller bearing the hub nut is done up to the high torque setting , the spacer gives the correct tolerances to the bearings.
Very well presented. Have just done a mini wheel bearing and even though it was hammered fully home when I tightened up hub nut it barely turns. Could it be a poor quality bearing, no it was not a Timeken bearing?

I have today just fitted the Timken wheel bearings from Mini Spares to new hubs as part of their complete brake/hub conversion kit, but their website says the inner wheel bearing spacer is no longer required and is not included in the kit. ...... Note: No. 15 - 21A1307 was deleted from production cars and no longer required.......... Were you aware of this change ?
Inner wheel bearing spacer? Do you mean the split ring that spaces out the inner grease seal? I was kind of aware, I know I have done bearings on later cars and they didn't have the spacer ring.
Hi Keith great video, I'm getting conflicting information from people about the torque setting of the hub nut when fitting timken bearings, some say go the full 250nm and others say this isnt the case with tapered bearings and they just need to be nipped-up as they still require some play. Not tightening them fully up seems crazy to me but what do I know. Any advice would be much appreciated. I've already had the cheap versions fail due to overheating so want to get it right this time around. Cheers
@@classicminiworkshop Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Its was made in 1980, originally 998 but converted some time ago (not by me) to an A+ metro 1275 engine. I've bought new hubs and converted to the 7.5 disks for 10 inch wheels.

If you want to check that the outer races are fully home - try pushing a 0.002" feeler gauge between the shoulder and the outer race

What if the spacer on the back of the hub for the grease seal is missing or shredded up with the old bearing?

Yes the split ring that spaces out the inner grease seal is no longer required according to Mini Spares.

What year and model is your Mini? The torque settings vary greatly depending on what year, drum brakes etc.

4:20 i'd have left the "Made in England" bearings in......................"if it aint broke, don't fix it" lol
I've kept the old ones. I might clean them up for a rainy day
