Hey everyone, I've been getting a lot of comments about how I did my ukulele, and luckily I had filmed the process.. So just for you, here's a little tutorial on how I made mine in case you are interested, or if you are starting a project like this one. I know this is a little long, but I wanted to be thorough. When I was starting this project I couldn't find too many videos with step by step instructions. I hope that this video helps you in your future projects ! If you have any comments or questions, leave them below. I will do my best to answer them :)
P.S. Sorry for harsh music transitions, I couldn't get my computer to blend them.
Products used:
- 220 Grit Sandpaper
- painter's tape
- tack cloth
- testor's decal paper (I used white)
- liquitex gesso
- krylon spray paint & primer semi gloss (white)
- krylon crystal clear acrylic spray (gloss)
Products you might use, that aren't listed:
- a small phillips screwdriver
- a tapered paint brush
- paper towel
- a piece of card stock paper
** I was not paid for any of the products I used in this video. I was happy with the results I got, and would recommend them, though !

Just buy a $42.00 Malala dolphin in white or pearl white. It is easier

i literally watched half this video to where she was painting it white ,put it on pause, then took a nap. in my nap i was her i.e i had a ukulele (which in reality i dont) and did everything she did, like everything to the point where i stopped this video and just drew what i wanted which was weird bc it was all things tøp, phan(their animations etc) and 1D. then woke up excited bc unlike everything else in my life, that ukulele came out awesome then i looked around my room all confused and stopped bc i forgot what i was doing then remembered it was dream and now i, finishing where i left off. *awkwardly/nervously laughs& pauses* imma mess ik.

If I have a ukulele that is already painted/glossy do I still need to use sandpaper or can I paint straight onto it? :)
you want to use sandpaper before painting over a gloss finish or the paint won't coat as well.

I was thinking of doing something like this in the past, but I never wanted to ruin my nice uke. Luckily, I was just given an old cheap one that I can try this out on!

I’m so tempted to try a custom uke because I normally play my brothers uke but I also own a cheap one...
As the decal paper is fairly thick, another idea is to use tissue paper. Choose, napkins etc with a cool design. pill appart the tissue so you have one thin layer. cut out your designs and stick on with clear pva glue or modpoge. then varnish over top.
+Michael Stoneham this specific decal paper is actually extremely thin. You can tear it easily with slight movement. It lays flat with the instrument while it's on. So it's probably more of a preference thing. I would not use the tissue paper because the decals will be much more durable as decals. But I have done modpodge before and it does end up looking very nice

Phan I'm going to buy one too! (also cheap). I read that actually it's better to start with a cheaper one and if you keep playing uke for a long time and you want to continue, then buy an expensive ukelele. It is because when you start you could break it or hurt it, or maybe get bored soon so it would be a waste if you buy a very expensive one at first

I would so do this but my current ukuleles are special to me. My first ukulele was my great grandmothers (I just visited her in Kauai) and my second ukulele I got about a week ago in Kauai since I haven’t been there in 9 years.

I literally just coloured my uke with a blue permanent marker and then rubbed it with nail polish remover and it looks really cool

had to mention this, but I bought a ukulele online that looks just like that for $120 (kind of a waste, I got a cheap one. yours is much better). so not only do I have a similar uke (named her Winona, js), but also the song I play all the time on it is Riptide so I instantly recognized those chords when you played at the end. what a funny coincidence! great vid, btw

I'd do this on a ukulele that was already white then I'd probably sand it down and hope that it doesn't take off much of the white and then add my floral or any design on it
Maybe.. my ukulele was given as a gift so I didn't really have a choice. Hopefully it wouldn't take too much paint off and dull it though

I didn't ! You definitely could if you wanted to. It would probably look just as pretty. I just wanted to have the sides a little different. Plus less work ;)
It looks gorgeous, but I'm wondering if painting it affected the sound at all? I've heard that can happen and I wouldn't want to ruin the sound of my uke.
At the end I show a clip of me playing it. I didn't notice any real difference in the sound. :)

Have you ever experienced any chipping on the ukulele? Wouldn't your hands start rubbing or chipping away the paint?
+Jaz Luna I have had a tiny chip happen, but only because i dropped it on concrete, which would happen with any paint job. As far as rubbing away the paint, it has never done that. It does get a little dirty because it's white but nothing vinegar doesn't take off in seconds :)

I can't imagine this process wouldn't completely destroy the sound but then you are using a cheap uke so it should really be considered an art piece rather than an instrument.
I have a video at the end and also my channel has a ton of videos with the sound quality. It did not change the sound because it is only a thin layer of paint.
