We have cloth shop and I can pinpoint the exact reason why they are not able to sell their inventory and making losses. The moment they said they have 8 waist sizes and 3 height sizes which gives the combination of 24 different sizes. Having 24 different sizes to choose from is quite attractive from the buyers point of view but it is nightmare for the seller. Explaining below, 1.Remember, 3 times the inventory needs to be stocked up to serve the same set of customers, it means the amount of business remains same while the working capital investment is 3 times, a big no no. 2.While not many might agree but having too many choices for customers encourages returning/exchanging the goods to to get the best fitting size. This increases the delivery charges by 3 times. 3. As a company manufacturing becomes difficult. Stock clearance takes longer time and manufacturers like to take the order in bulk. But with these many sizes it is easier to land in situation where one of your popular size is sold out and others as sitting as is and you don’t have money to order the sold out size.

To be really honest garments buisness is one of the hardest buisness to do. 1. You have to have wide range of operations to sell just 1 item. 2. Dead stock. Dead stock is the biggest challenge in this business and if you don't clear that it's gonna sink your business 3. Vendor credits. It's a capital intensive buisness. The retailers work on credit model which raises the concern for cashflow 4. You never know what customer will like and when the trend will change Telling these from my own experience from failed garments startup
