My dad was working in China in 2009 - One day, while on the subway, a Russian walked up to my dad and while pointing at his Hawkeye cap he said, "Dan Gable." I think that was 37 years after Gable had 'beaten the Russian's best' - running through the Olympics without a point scored on him - even years after Gable became the greatest coach - ever. For those who know. Legend. Around the world.

When asked which Olympian he'd like to work with most if he ever got the chance, Travis Stevens--an Olympic Judo Silver medalist and world Gold medalist who never actually competed in wrestling, even as a high schooler--said his dream goal would be to train with Dan Gable. Even just sitting in on watching him coach his wrestlers would be a privilege to him. Well played Lex! This is the best Dan G interview I have ever experienced! Dan is a complicated man, an egg who is hard to crack, and without a doubt the greatest amateur wrestler who has ever lived. You were able to get him to open up his heart to subjects I have never seen before such as the death of his sister and his true insights into his personal life and philosophy as a coach and as a wrestler. Will be sharing this with many friends as it is very special! Rock on!!!!!

I've always admired Dan Gable, even though I've never wrestled. There are so many similarities between wrestling and auto racing. Preparation, meticulous detail, practice, replaying your actions and finding that balance between toughness and determination and absolute perfection.
This is, by far, your best interview. Thank you for resharing this during this time Lex.

I loved the podcast and Dans perspective. Open and honest. Makes you understand how far a world class athlete has to go and the power of confidence (after you have trained yourself to death!). Greatly enjoy the varied topics you cover and listen to them while driving. Keep rockin!

Great interview! I have lived outside Iowa City all my life, and wrestled. I have seen, talked to, drank a beer with, and been fascinated by Gable since the late 70’s. Your interview brought out things about Gable I hadn’t heard before.
And in the words of Gable: Once you have wrestled, everything elseis easy”

Great interview Lex. Had the pleasure to sit next to Coach Gable and the Peterson brothers at the summer Olympics in Greece and watch Cael win gold. Couldn’t believe how friendly he was. I was just an average college wrestler so the chance to hang out with him there was definitely a highlight in my life. His insight and passion are inspiring indeed.
