- Hey all!
Okay... so I have finally gotten around to talking about first year courses and requirements for all my fellow Science students out there!! I'm sorry if you're in another faculty - I don't know all too much about how they work and have kind of focused on understanding how my own faculty works. I am still learning!

P.S I still have some questions about transfer credits. If I meet the qualification, will the credit be granted automatically when my exam results are sent to UBC, or do I need to contact, say, a science academic advisor myself and confirm that I want these credits? If the credits are granted automatically, how long (roughly) will it take before I'm able to see them in the student service center (a couple days, a couple weeks, or months?)

Hi Fanny! When I took my AP exams, I opted to have them directly sent to UBC. Because of that, the credits were granted automatically. You don’t need to apply for them or contact anybody as long as you opted to have your grades sent to UBC directly. If you look at your SSC and they don’t show up, despite you passing that exam, then I would contact an advisor and they’ll be able to help you out. It shouldn’t take too long after the results of the exam come out. To be fair, it’s an incredibly busy time of year during the summer for UBC as they’re ramping up for the fall so it might take a little bit of time but not overwhelmingly long. I would probably say a couple of weeks. I can’t quite remember… hopefully that helps a little bit!

really helpful vid!! What was your timetable last year?
Glad you liked it! It's a little tough to explain because it changed each term but in simple terms, I had class everyday, about 4 hours a day.
How is the first year focus program. is it worth for a major CS in the second year. Heard that the courses are online. That is an issue as i will be staying in campus why would I attend online courses. Is it better to take the regular program or is FYF worth it
for chemistry 121 and 123, I was a bit confused when planning my courses because they both have lecture versions and lab versions and I wasn't sure which one I would need to take

You need to take both the lecture and lab for CHEM 121 and 123. You should take CHEM 121 lecture and lab in first term and then CHEM 123 lecture and lab in second term. Glad to hear this helped you out Sammy!

can i fulfill my biology, chemistry and physics requirements later on, not in first year? currently Im taking maths, comp sci, physics for my major requirements and data science, economics (macro and micro), french for my electives with english for my communication requirements. Do you think I should take one of the 2 other sciences above (chem/bio), would they count as my elective of requirement. I wanted to take Biology 101 (intro) but am unsure if that will be or fall under the category electives or not. Please help! I would really appreciate if we could talk through a zoom or smth, because I'm really lost and the university isn't responding to me :( I know thats a large ask but I would really appreciate it!

Not off the top of my head no. You would have to take a look at the courses they list on their academic calendar - they tell you everything you need to know about your degree!
hi! I was wondering, if I took physics 11 would I need to take physics 100? Your videos are super helpful!! :)
Hi Cassidy! If you want to avoid PHYS 100, you need to take physics 12 as well. If you only took Physics 11, then yes, you would need to take PHYS 100.
Hi Maddy, thanks for all of your videos! Quick question: I took Physics 12 and Chemistry 12. I can see that they count towards the foundational requirement, but I can't find if they count towards the breadth requirement. Am I missing something or will I have to take 6 of the 7 at UBC?
Hi Victor! I believe the breadth requirement is fulfilled by courses you take in university. Your high school courses do not count towards it. I don’t remember off the top of my head but I want to say it’s either five of the seven or six of the seven that you have to complete. It depends on whether or not you were planning to do a minor or a double major. In your first year alone, you will likely fulfil your breadth requirement just because there is quite the variety of courses you need to take.

I am in the 11th grade at the moment and I am not sure whether to apply for early admission or wait until regular application times. I heard they look at grade 10 final scores in which I had a 89% average which makes me hesitant on applying early.
They don't look at grade 10 scores at all. they mostly pay attention to grades 11 and 12. Also, like if you have chemistry 11 and 12 both done they will look at your grade 12 chemistry mark. Hopefully, this helps.

@@hansmorales4802 Hi! I applied to science too. You don't need to, but let me tell you I highly recommend it, it will make your life easier. I didn't take physics 12 now I have to take Phys 100 before I could take anything else with physics prerequisite and for science, you kinda need chem for almost anything especially for microbio and immunology major. Again you can still take science with no chem 12 if it's hard for you to take it in school.
Heyy Maddie, do I need to take physics and chem courses in the first year to fulfill the Foundational requirement if I had Physics, chemistry and maths in my A levels?
Hi! Check out this webpage and pay attention to the courses you will/will not receive credit for with your A-levels. You must have either an A or a B to receive credit. I don't believe you would receive credit for CHEM 121 or 123, or any MATH courses. You would receive credit for PHYS 100 or 101 though! If I took Ap chem, Ap bio, Ap calc (AB and BC) and Ap physics would that take care of some of those science credits?
Only if you pass the AP exam, scoring a 4 or 5!
thank you so much for this video, is it possible to get in without physics? I have all the other prereqs except physics, could I replace them by taking PHYS100 in my first year? Or do I really need to at least have grade 11 physics?
Hi Vanessa! I believe that Physics 11 is required for admission because UBC does not offer an equivalent course like PHYS 100 (which equates to physics 12). I would recommend contacting with enrolment services and see what they can do/say. They will be able to help you out!

Hey my applied science courses has a must requirement for a STT so how does it work. Could u plz help me out
For the STT you just pick one and register for it. All the courses should be pre planned for you so there isn’t much you need to do besides register for it. Applied science students have a very strict timetable in their first year.
if Im in the low 80s in chem 11 but in the mid 90s in chem 12, do you think i have a low chance getting accepted into a science path in your opinion?
It's not about individual courses but rather your collective average. It is important to be as strong as you can in all courses they look at for admissions, but don't worry too much about one lower grade! Remember your personal profile is a huge part of admissions!
Hello... I've applied for bsc biology (sept intake) i got 90% in garde 9, 91% in grade 10, 78% in grade 11 and 93% in grade 12 with a band score of 7 in IELTS...do you think I've a chance to get accepted in ubc?
Hi! It sounds like you have set yourself up for success - UBC only looks at grade 11 and 12 grades so your grade 9 and 10 ones don't really matter. I can't tell you what the odds are but if you apply you have a chance! Best of luck to you!

Heyy maddy! Could you help me with something. Do they use copies or papers for writing in ubc classes or do you have to carry your tablet/ipad alongside your laptop.

There are many ways for you to take notes. Very rarely will profs hand out physical worksheets as it is a LOT of paper... almost everything you do in class is available online. That being said, you don't need to have an ipad or laptop to take notes ( you can just use a notebook if you want) but to be able to access your course material you need some kind of electronic device. I carried my ipad from class to class to take my notes and usually left my laptop in my room. On days where I know I need to type things out, or access multiple materials, I'll carry my laptop too. Hope that helps!

Hi Maddie! I’m currently in 11th grade in a really small school in vancouver island... my school isn’t competetive much so it is comparatively much easier to get good grades here than other high schools. Do you think they care about the level of hs you attended?
Hi! I don't know if they even ask you what high school you went to... regardless, they don't hold you to where you came from! it doesn't really matter :)

What are you going to school for?
That's a very good question! I am not totally sure where I am going to end up but my goal is to major in integrated science and pursue a blend of nutrition, kinesiology, and psychology!
If I took AP English would the credit for that count for the communications major??
If you took AP English and passed the exam (got a 4 or 5) then yes, you would receive 3 credits I believe that would count towards your communication requirement!

Hi Maddy! I was wondering how do you decide between 2 courses that are equivalent? Many of my intended specializations say “math xxx or math xxx” and I never know how to pick one! Where can I find more info to help me decide?
Hi Laura!
I would recommend looking at your intended major and seeing if it requires a specific math course. Because most are equivalent, that might not help all too much but it doesn't hurt to check. For me, choosing between math specifically, I chose Math 104 and 105 which is the business stream. I had heard life science math courses were more difficult as the concepts were not as easy to apply. Personally, I wanted something more relevant to my business studies rather than science. At least in business, which complemented my COMM courses, I was able to learn applicable concepts. In part I think it kind of comes down to preference and because they are equivalent... not to say it doesn't matter which you choose, but you will learn the same thing just with different applications.
I'm not too sure if there is a specific place you can go to find out more about this. The academic calendar is your best bet, but even there they only tell you what is equivalent, not which is better based on your program.

You've got two options... If you know people at UBC, talk to them. I used a website called Rate my Prof... though I feel bad saying I used a website to determine how good a teacher was before I had actually experienced their teaching, it was very helpful. If you're a science student, email me and I can give you a full run down of the profs I had in my first year.

hello maddy, i’m from Singapore and am going to graduate with a Diploma in Biomedical Science (equivalent to high school in canada i think). I’m considering to apply for UBC but i’m torn between business and science! how are you coping tho do you think it’s manageable ? & what are some modules that you’re learning ?:)

I am in the B+MM program and, at least right now, there is a significantly greater focus on science rather than business. It makes sense though because the Masters, which is all business, comes at the end of your bachelors. It's been totally manageable as all the COMM courses count as electives for your science degree. It's not something extra, it just kind of fits right into your schedule. I really like the blend as it gives me a taste of both science and business. The program really allows you to complement your science degree with business!
During your undergraduate, you primarily learn business fundamentals with a focus on marketing, accounting, and communications. Whatever you are learning in science is whatever you choose to specialize in.

@@vivekgandhi8891 I'm not sure. That is dependant on the faculty. Some you enter directly into your specialization while others might start 2nd or 3rd year.
@@vivekgandhi8891 Engineering has a very strict set of courses you can take in your first year. Check out the academic calendar as it will show you exactly what you have to take. At least in engineering, it is expected you take 6 courses a term.

Nope! Just 11 and 12!
