Stan taught me to play guitar. We both went to John street in Hamilton and picked out my Yamaha. We played in Coffee houses together. I drove him to work in exchange for guitar lessons. I am so fortunate to have had in my life.
Sometimes, I feel like I was born in the wrong generation… I would have loved to see Stan in concert, let alone meet him face-to-face. Sadly, I was born over 20 years after he died. From what I heard he was a very caring, passionate, genuine guy. The kind of person we need more of today.
I often wonder how much magnificent music was in this young man's head that we were never privileged to hear. I have all his recordings and love all of his music. Many of his songs have been a great comfort in hard times.
This one hits me as a school teacher, as a father, and just generally as an old man! "I've "told that kid a hundred times" ...... too many times to count! 😪
This song always causes me to think about when I taught junior and senior high students. It's educational yet tells a story; it gives advice to young adults without backlash.
Same here. He had an amazing talent in capturing how people in certain environments, situations and emotional states would think and feel, without having experienced it himself - probably by relating it to similar situations in his own life, much like a method actor. The Method Actor of Songwriting. And what a voice.
@@danmckay6038 It's pretty scary how close, but it makes sense. One of my sons sound just like me when answering the phone, with some humorous consequences!
I was on the Lakes in 1975, at the age of 18. Listening to this in 2021, it feels like it was only yesterday. Thank you so much for making this available. RIP Stan Rogers.
An incredibly huge " Thank you" for putting this online! Seeing videos like this make Stan seem more human, not the powerhouse performer he was, but a man who may as well be singing in the living room. So wonderful.
One of the blessings of this surreal and frightening chapter is that we found Stan two summers ago on Pandora. His voice and spirit have calmed and inspired and moved us so deeply. What a treasure
Thanks for the post. I just watched a Lightfoot documentary, did a search for Stan videos and here I am. He would probably still be going if he hadn’t been on that airplane. Coming up on 40 years without him. But he chose a profession which allows him to live forever.
Thanks for posting. I've been a fan for decades - discovered his music not long after he passed away - but have never seen concert footage. Just amazing.
I love Stan and we are so lucky to have these few live videos. Wish I could find John Allan Cameron live like this. Other than a few clips that have been online forever.
The only girl I really loved was lost at sea in a storm off the coast of Mallorca. Her body was never found. I think that's why this song affects me so.
Just incredible. Would love to see a newer artist like Colter Wall pickup some of these songs and make an album. Too many people are not aware of who this gentleman is.
I saw Stan perform live many times, always at McCabe's in Santa Monica except for once at the Vancouver Folk Festival. (McCabe's only seated 150, and was far preferable because it was for more intimate and a powerful experience, IMO.) This is one of my VERY favorite songs of his. I was practically speechless the first time I heard it. THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting. Do you have any more?

Did he reinforce DADGAD?

You were a lucky man.
You were at Waddingtons !
@gordonleighton8438 wow.

I don't know why Stan's songs always reduce me to tears, but this one does, and so does 45 Years. What a voice! What a poet!

45 years would have to be one of the greatest, and more moving, of love songs I've heard.
Stan Rogers, gone far too early but certainly not forgotten by anyone who loves a good song.
He's my kid remodel
His son sounds just like him

I sound like my dad too

There are very very few musicians like Stan, such a great loss to music
This is such a gem. I saved and backed this up to ensure it Tis’ not lost
It must be in the culture. Canada has sent us so many fantastic troubadours. What a wonderful nation.

Heartrending. A true bard.
Got caught in a white squall off Port Austin in 1970 or 71. Thought I was a goner. Hard to believe that was 50 years ago. Thanks Stan!
Live concerts of Stan are rare. Thank youu

One of his most beautiful IMHO. Thanks SO much for posting!
This is GOLD :)
Absolutely stunning song.
Epic voice storytelling, rest well Mister Rogers
November 2021 and loving the footage of a live Stan song....
I always get tears when I listen to this song.
What a legend. Much love from the other side of the lakes! As a michigander, stan will always be favorite shantyman.
Same, WI here. Anyone whose ever seen Lake Superior or Michigan knows how crazy their history is. We learned about this stuff in middle school.
And yet it was another 3 years before this brilliant composition ended up on an album (From Fresh Water).

That voice is something else.
Yes. One of those haunting voices that get into one's heart and soul.
Thank you so much for putting this online. It means a lot to many of us to see him, even if in a memory
By far the best song to ever mention The Soo
Thank you for posting. Those Rogers boys make good musicians.
just fantastic. Thank you
Stunning!

Just perfect !

The greatest.
His voice sounds the same as the records!
I know! That's how you know it's all him, no filters. Gives me the goose pimples. Lol
a canadian hero
Is it true he died in a plane fire rescuing fellow passengers
Yes @@roberthoward467

My 12 year old loves him thy want to go to the stan rogers festive): pirate sir
reminds me of casey station, antarrrrrctica, the winds be blowin' 100 from time to time... some foul easterlies whipping up the snow
I'm back again, a sad but beautiful tale this one
A great Canadian group has a very good rendition of this song. Look for Enter the Haggis.
There aren't enough superlatives to describe this......
Is that Garnett Rogers on 2nd Guitar
Yes.
@@rblechta Thank you
Yes
Gorgeous, right? And still to this day
Yes, it's Garnet.
Where did you find these clips?
