Herbert von Karajan - An Alpine Symphony (Richard Strauss)

Richard Strauss’ “An Alpine Symphony“ is a symphonic poem that was first performed in 1915. It is his longest orchestral work, lasting about 50 minutes and written for a huge orchestra of about 120 musicians. It is remarkable that Karajan, one of the most important of all Strauss conductors, only found his way to the “Alpine Symphony” when he was over 70. In December 1980, Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic made their only studio recording. Between 1981 and 1988, they performed the piece 20 times in concert. This interview was recorded as an introduction for his television film in 1983.

I miss Maestro Karajan so much !
I was very honored to have met him on few occasions. He was speaking a perfect French language!
The memories I have today are the live concerts I experienced, among them Brahms symphonies and Richard Strauss symphonic poems !
Words can not explain my feelings listening to these music. It was like a path to Nirvana, time being literally suspended.
I will be forever greatful to Maestro Karajan for these extactic moments!

Das ist sehr wahr, was Karajan über den Schluss der Alpensinfonie
sagt. Ich habe sie mit den Philharmonikern und ihm als Dirigenten
gehört und kann mich noch an alles erinnern. Es war sooo herrlich
schön, dass man nicht mehr atmen wollte um die Musik vollkommen
in sich hineinzulassen. Ein psthumes Bravo nach soviel Jahren.
