There are live versions of this that are definitely 10 flat... I really like the album (but prefer the orchestrated version "My 20th Century Symphony", which was recorded live...) but her concerts are on yet another level - You should watch her at Pukkelpop Festaval, Belgium, just a few days ago before she opened for Taylor Swift at Wembley, completely epic gig, also with a great full set video in prime video and audio quality... Peace and love from BavaRAYEa!
Raye is sometimes compared to Amy Winehouse. I don't usually get the comparison (beyond them both being British & into Jazz/Blues etc) but this song is SO Amy Winehouse. I love it.
I hate this Amy Winehouse comparisons. RAYE is unique artist and she shouldn't be compared to anyone. Also Genesis. isn't part of My 21st Century Blues album. It will probably be included in her next album.
I thought she did straight away maybe because of her looks but when you listen to her she could be any popular singer from the last 30 years. maria Carey, Rhianna, Jessie J, I think it's her songwriting has such a vibe. Only one Raye though 😊
i cant wait for your prada reviews as well as mother nature. i love raye so much! cant wait till you react to live performances. she has such a genuine personality on stage.
this song is practically about drugs, not as specific as (Mary Jane), but at the same time living the mood of happiness. tell me something nice it will always be in my line
Yea, it's about a "toxic" situationship she had with a British rapper. In her shows, she usually prefaces the song by telling the audience to never date rappers
Great reaction please do a review of Raye singing Natalie don't (acoustic) you have to do the acoustic version of her just playing the piano it's phenomenal. I've been a Raye fan for a while but it just blew me away, something a little different.
I get the comparison to Amy Winehouse, but to say Raye is 'like' her is kind of reductive and actually quite a heavy label for to put on any artist, given the tragic trajectory of Amy's life and career; and I'm also sick of hearing it. Amy and Raye clearly shared many influences, and there's a sense in which all British female singers, in particular, who have come after Amy have been influenced by her. Her loss was a traumatic event for many music fans of that era, and there is a natural yearning to replace her. Well, tough! Amy is gone, and we cannot just cram the next young singer into the void that she left, because that's not fair on them. So I think its worth emphasising the ways in which Raye is not like Amy Winehouse! My first suggestiin would be that Raye clealy adores performing, feels completely at home on a live stage, rarely makes any kind of mistake that an audience would notice, and as far as I can tell, is careful to ensure that she gives the best performance she possibly can. It is truly painful to recall that is an objective that Amy sometimes lost sight of, turning some of her live shows into spectacles for voyeurs, like people gawping at an accident on the motorway. Even at her best, when she could be really good, she never appeared particularly at ease on stage; it was as if she wasn't quite convinced she deserved to be there. Whatever emotions Raye goes through when she is performing, I don't see her being clouded with doubts about her ability to deliver, and given that she has such an improvisatory approach to each performance, from the general vibe down to the tiniest details in her vocal lines, she must be having a blast. Raye leans into her vulnerability, both in her songwriting and her performances, sharing some harrowing experiences, and the rawness of her feelings in a very emotive way. However, she's all about having survived the experiences that came her way, overcoming the challeges she faced, and affirming her underlying strength and resilience. Theres nothing trite about her storytelling, but fundamentally there is a sense of hope and optimism to her music, right down to the way she performs it. I don't hear the same bleak resignation that pervades many of the somgs on Back to Black, for example, which were magnificently melancholic, but heavy with foreboding. I'm sure there are many other points of difference, but these two seem pretty important to me. Rest in Peace, Amy, and best wishes to Raye, for whom we are excited to see what the future brings.
i am BEGGING for a live performance reaction. specifically this song, but pick any and you’d have a blast.
I agree 💯💯
yes!!! I just saw her live, and she's truly incredible.
The tinydesk is really sensational Brady, if you read this! Most of her live performances are, of course, but tinydesk is a good place to start.
Okay, okay. We are back with some more RAYE. My fav intro on your channel.

Great review. You really need to watch the live version of The Thrill is Gone that Raye performed at the Mercury Awards. It’s brilliant.
