I don't know it was such a surprise when Colton came out? Like how was that a big deal or secret? What does coming out have anything to do with being a good worker? I always thought Colten was cool and funny.
Well because homophobic people exist and often after coming out actors/actresses have been stonewalled, not able to get jobs, perceived only through their sexuality etc. I'm glad he's able to live openly as himself now, being in the closet is horrible especially if one is in the public eye. But yes the homophobic society at large necessitates actors/actresses to be in the closet and then come out if/when they are ready to take the possible hit to their careers. And that's why it's such a big deal, and also because it's such an emotional and unifying subject to LGBT folks around the world who experience oppression. Things are changing towards the better in Hollywood, but slowly.
