Joseph Smith was killed by a mob of people in the next door town of Carthage. He was waiting a court trial. It’s actually pretty dark history of the people of the US. The government completely failed the people. There are not very many accounts of genocide outside of Native American history in the US, but this one. What is crazy to think the Mormons were driven out of the area, moved to Utah and rebuilt. 170-180 years later they have 230 billion dollars n assets. And now own the entire town.
