I use stainless pans and recently discovered that if you add a small amount of water to dirty pan and bring to a boil, you can dump the gunk out without even scrubbing. Even gunk that you would soak overnight and still need to scrub. I wish I had known this over the last 50 years.
I have stainless steel pans and I love them. Whatever sticks I use my cloth pad with no problem. I love that they still look new after ten years or more. They really do.
I like that you discarded the jars because you recognized that it doesn’t work for you. But to dispute what you said about jars taking up space even if they’re empty or what to do if you have more than fits in the jar- the way jars work best is that they are designated space for what you need and use. It takes some effort and/or time to determine what those items are but once you have it established you have the containers needed, there’s space for them to hold items you need and it dictates what gets stored in a space. So containers need to be selected to hold the quantity you need- they do need to fulfil their purpose. Mason jars are great because they come in so many sizes, are sealable, easy to find and affordable. And the biggest benefit is that you can buy in bulk and forgo the packaging. It’s easy to see when you getting low, take an empty jar to the bulk food store and refill it. No more decanting into your jars.
Great points for sure, but I guess it depends where you shop. I believe she does instacart with ALDI and they don't sell bulk items without packaging. She would always have to open up the box and pour the items in a jar.
That doesn't sound sanitary-- to refill a container from home from the communal bin; kinda like taking a used plate back to the buffet line for seconds.
I agree with the jar problem. I don’t want half or totally empty jars taking up room in my small storage closet. It’s so much easier to just throw away empty packages and not deal with a ton of mostly empty jats
I'm with you on the jars: i tried them years ago, and quickly ran into the problem of having extra from the package that wouldn't fit, but mainly that once you buy a back-up or a refill, you need to completely use up what's in the jar before you refill it. You don't want to have a layer of old food in the bottom. So, meanwhile, you have this extra pkg, plus the jar! They need to invent a cannister where you can refill it from the top, but dispense it from the bottom -- then you're always using the oldest first. And then if I bought a different brand, there can be a quality difference, but i don't have the original bottle or name (I think about that when I see people decant their spices ). I keep flour, sugar, brown sugar, and powdered sugar in fabulous vintage Tupperware containers bc you can't store them and use them out of the original bags. Btw, if your brown sugar gets hard, put a piece of bread in with it -- it will restore it to like-new condition!
The first problem can be solved by using jars that are large enough for the actual package sizes. It's basically just flour that needs decanting right away (to avoid bugs), everything else can stay in their original packaging until the jar is completely empty. To decant flour, I use two jars/containers per item. I fill one, empty, jar with new flour, leaving just enough room for the old flour. Then I fill the old flour on top, and empty the new flour into the just emptied jar. Basic staples aren't usually different enough from brand to brand to cause lots of concern, in my experience.
I feel the same about decanting stuff into jars! I’m not doing it any more either. Thanks for the inspiration! I’m going to declutter my kitchen this week too!
Oh same here! I like the look of a couple which are on display but for hidden storage I got annoyed that sometimes I had a jar and still a packet or box because it wouldn't all fit in! Hardly the space saving dream I had gone into with blinkers on. 😆
I agree. I don’t even use jars or canisters for flour, sugar and the like. I dump them into a gallon zipper bag. I store them inside a cupboard on a shelf. This saves so much room as they are never all full at the same time. Also I never have to wash a canister. Every time I open a new paper bag it goes in a new zipper bag.
I love things decanted into jars. I love the way it looks and the way it all fits in my cabinets. I am sure it’s not for everyone but I like things out of the packaging and visual. I guess I have chosen jars or containers that fit the size of the product that I have. I totally agree with you on getting rid of the food items you don’t like. I have been guilty of hanging on to some high end product just because I can’t bring myself to get rid of it. No more! Try it, don’t like it, pass it on or throw it out. I will add that you could have returned that Everything but the Bagel to Trader’s and they would give you your money back. Just FYI but I know that involves remembering that you even have it. I have been dragging around something that we tried and didn’t like for three months and always forget to take it in, 😂 I need to just throw it out!
Decanting is a necessity for really old homes... like early 1900 or older... pantry moths can burrow through plastic bags so a very well sealed glass jar is crucial. Ask me how I know😞... but I don't decant anything that isn't necessary.... like laundry soap.
Last year my granddaughter decided it was time to declutter and organize my kitchen, (she was right) I helped her in deciding what to get ride if, I realized I do not need 50 casserole dishes! ( little bit of exaggeration) we have 1 large cabinet left to do. But it felt so good to get rid of things I do not use anymore. We donated to a church that has a thrift store. Looking forward to your motivation vlogs coming up, I have more to do. Thanks
Thank you!! You are the ONLY person that I have ever seen address the “what if you have more than fits into the pretty container?” issue! You should naturally get a new one before the jar is empty so you will always be storing whatever doesn’t fit!
I have a counter of jars in all sizes as I de-clutter them, and I find myself annoyed with them! LOL! They are so heavy and I like any alternative storage at this point.
I purchased pretty glass jars several years ago and never used them. Finally moved them from the kitchen to the basement storage. Decided this Christmas I would make homemade granola and gift to neighbors using the jars. Well, it was a good idea until I went to retrieve the jars only to discover I must have donated them! 🤷🏼♀️
I agree about putting things in the jars. I do the same thing with getting rid of packaging, like cereal boxes and just keeping the bag. It saves so much room.
We’re empty nesters with 3 grown kids. I learned a long time ago that if someone with a baby or toddler comes to visit, they’ll bring their own sippy cup, bibs & other baby items with them. I could say “goodbye!” to ours and pass them along in a timely manner to someone who could make good use of them. Love ❤️ this series from all you ladies!
Love your philosophy about household items. I have a tendency to hold onto everything but my kitchen is small and I really need to donate lots of stuff. Thank you for your inspiration.
I know Dawn. She is awesome. Lives near me. Thank you for another sweet video. You have inspired me in cooking and being content with my older house and what we can do with it. It’s small and we have seven of us living in it. But I love the neighborhood and being so walkable to everything.
I love using my cast iron and dutch oven. I cook daily if not twice a day on my cast iron. Thanks for sharing! This time of year is a great time to do this.
Thanks so much for sharing! Your organizing videos and overall perspective on what deserves space in our homes has had such a positive impact on me over the years. I really appreciate what you share! You’re a blessing.
I just moved into our forever home and my cabinets are all considered containers now. My limits to what I can keep. It’s made such a difference in how my kitchen functions and my entire outlook on cooking in general. I know where everything is, where I would look for that item and nothing is overflowing! It’s such a freeing feeling.
I love that you explain how jars look nice but that you knew you wouldn’t really use it. I know I am guilty of saying oh nice I want that but if I am honest with myself I wouldn’t actually keep up with it. Finding a way to organize and de clutter what we really aren’t using makes sense and I thinks it’s what is best. Love it❤️ great advice so thank you
Please keep the stainless steel pans and ditch the non-stick ones instead! The non-stick will scratch and wear at which point they become unsafe for use, especially when you are feeding kids. The steel will last a lifetime - the trick to cleaning is to put water in the pan as soon as you have served the food (or put the leftovers away) while it is still warm and let it sit until you wash up. If you forget, add some water and bicarb soda to the pan and bring it back to the boil. Comes right off. I totally get you on the glass storage, it annoys the heck out of me too! Plus they make everything so much heavier. Unfortunately I live in a humid climate with frequent bug infestations and glass is the only thing that stops them from eating their way through every packet in the pantry overnight :-(
I agree as well. I got rid of all the coated pans because of the health risks associated with them, and switched to stainless steel. As you mentioned you just have to soak the pan after using. If there is still some food stuck to the pan I just sprinkle some baking soda in the pan. It makes a great non-abrasive cleaner.
I really want to get rid of the non stick pans but how do you cook scrambled eggs, omelets and pancakes? I find they stick to stainless steel pans so much.
I’m over here laughing. Great video btw! When my daughter got her first apartment went to store shopping for stuff for new place. You should have seen her face in the kitchen isles. They want what for a cooking sheet!! I laughed. We got back to my house and seriously purged my kitchen. I am now an empty nester. Why in the heck did I have 6 cookie sheets, spatulas, cake pans, cutting boards and more😳 know it went to a good home and will be used 💕 Highly recommend anyone to check with friends, coworkers, maybe even facebook? Saved my daughter a ton of money for stuff I wasn’t using anyways.
Thanks Dawn, as always a wonderful reflection of you in your decluttering. I gain so much watching your channel. I am going to adopt the taking things out of boxes in my pantry and group together like things. Great timing for this series.
I definitely feel ya on using the jars for storage. A few months ago, I bought some plastic cereal containers, thinking they would help organize that shelf in my pantry. The containers took up soooooo much space and it especially drove me crazy when they were empty or almost empty! I got rid of them. And I get rid of the outside packaging as well. Have a blessed week! ❤️
I've tried some of those cereal containers before. They off gassed a strong plastic smell into my food (after a good washing) which ruined the flavor. Forget which brand it was but that's something else to consider.
Wow...that was a lot of stuff! Amazing job! I think i don't get rid of things right away because I hate throwing them away and being wasteful. I of course donate what i can burr the other stuff leads to major guilt in the dump!
I too am definitely not a decanting kind of person, at least not now! Putting away groceries is enough work with 3 little kids - I don’t want to add even more! I love seeing what you learned and what you decluttered! So fun to do this challenge with you! 💖
Very inspiring! I've often said to myself, "I wish I can hire Hillary to declutter my house!" -- and this series is the next best thing. Thank you. I'm one of those people who are sentimental about things I've used in the past, especially the things I used when raising my kids. But hey, we are laying up our Treasure in heaven....not here. I'm gonna get over it!!!
Love the one in, one out rule as well as the concept of keeping only what we actually use. We really do need a lot less than we think we do. I think it’s the “maybe one day” mentality that gets us into trouble. Think that pair of jeans that we keep in the hopes of one day fitting into them 😂. Thanks for the tips and inspiration. Have a lovely day 😊.
Erica- I liked this video and subscribed to this channel, but I wanted to reply directly to you here while it's on my mind. You are so gracious and encouraging. I like that you always look for the bottom line/ big picture as you learn and teach these practical tips. I think, btw, that you are the only creator on this list that is actually watching and commenting on all the videos! You are an asset to this community.
@@KMom2boys hi Karen! How lovely to read this. Kindness in the comments is important to me. I like watching all of these videos and meeting new people!!
Thank you for explaining the no jars! Every video that does that, I’m like, “I’m out.” I just don’t want to put my energy into that! Subscribing just because of the no jars. 😂
Yeeeeesssss....I love a good declutter. We just moved into our current home in March 2020. So while the moving process itself brings about a lot of decluttering, I know I could do more. Especially now that we have "lived" in our new kitchen for 9 months, I feel like it is time to reassess and declutter more! Thanks for sharing...I have SO missed you since Vlogmas! I can't wait to see the kitchen tour.
This is excellent advice, but I find it SO hard to do! It is like ripping off a band aid, that is stuck to a wound, you KNOW it has to be done, but it is so hard to just DO it! I agree it feels and looks great, once done! I am still here with my band aids stuck, working up the courage to rip them off!😂
I know what you mean space, allows your house to breath, i think when your house is too full of stuff i genuinely think it affects you, thankyou Hilary good start to new year xxx
Thanks for all the great tips Hillary! I have never done the glass jar decanting because I always wondered the same thing what would you do with the leftovers. I did just start to do it with my baking supplies to keep them fresh and cereal and I really like the look of it. Do you have motivated me to take another sweep through my kitchen even though I generally tend to be on the minimal side of things. I went through our cookie cutters in December and did the same thing. Have a great day! Looking forward to the series!
I have a space in my kitchen the builder called a breakfast nook. Not! I can't even fit a bistro set there. I brought in a bookcase that holds all of my jars. I do use my jars because things stay fresh. I do keep a lot of dry goods and I do use them from the jars because they don't get lost in my dark over stuffed pantry. pantry.
Your decluttering and organizing videos are my favorites! I’ve saved and rewatched your Tips for a Clutter Free Home (3/9/18) vid many times!! I love your seasonal wardrobe videos too! Thank you for helping me simplify realistically!! 🤗💖🌸🌞
Your content is so on point for me this week! That was actually in my plan to be ruthless in my kitchen declutter on Thursday after the kids get started back with their virtual school. Thanks for sharing!
Great ideas, We actually got rid of our cast iron for stainless steel. We find baking soda and dish soap works amazing to make them look like new. We're getting rid of all (65) oil refills and replacing them with a couple bags of baking soda. The oil refills are toxic to cats. We decided not to take any chances with our kitty furson.
I don't even decant the flour or use canisters lol. Everything stays in its package it came in. Too much dishwashing for me to justify doing it. Cute is good but it defeats the purpose when it gives me more tasks and stress. As long as things are zoned into categories for quick access it's good enough for me.
My daughter is 2 too and I holding on to bottles. O how it broke my heart to get rid of them and bibs. I dont really keep alot of stuff but when it comes to baby items my uterus is like nooo and my brain tells it to Shut Up!🤣🤣🤣
Looking forward to seeing your kitchen organisation video. We have a pretty average sized English kitchen. Definitely not a small, cottage one, but also not a huge modern-American style one. Hopefully some of your organisation tips can inspire a little declutter and reorganisation for me in a future weekend. Thank you!
Great ideas and letting things go is hard it’s funny cause I was just talking to my girlfriend last night about it and I said when you have less clutter even around your home or in your closets and cupboards then you never feel like your decor looks fresh and new when you change it up for the seasons because there’s always so much extra clutter around and when you D clutter and keep your spaces clean you feel like you’ve accomplished something and everything looks so much better so thanks for reminding us of that !!! if you don’t use it throw it away or give it to someone else🤗
What good incentive today. I need to do exactly what you said. I have ordered new countertops to be installed sometime this month. I have to remove all the top drawers before they start. They tend to become catchalls do I will start there. Sometime we need a little push to get inspired. Thanks 👏👍
Okay, I just weeded out the Christmas ornaments and now you're challenging me to declutter the kitchen. Ouch! I opened up one cabinet and took out 6 jars that have no business in with the glasses. Looks like another revelation!
The kitchen can get cluttered so quickly. It seems like the clutter never ends. This is so helpful! I just posted a video where i decluttered and organized my pantry 🙏🏻 having a simplified kitchen is amazing. Great way to start the year!
Thank you for the inspiration!! I have been noticing lately all the "stuff"that has been accumulating. The new year is a good time to declutter. I have just been going so much recently but things are slowing down so there is no excuse anymore. I so needed to see this video today!
This is such a great video! I came over from the Clutter Bug :) So glad I found your channel! Can’t wait to see all your videos to come! I love decluttering ♥️♥️♥️
Great video Hillary! This series is exactly what I need right now. :0) We spent much of our week between Christmas & New Year tackling half of our basement. Now the motivation to tackle the 2nd half!! :0)
Happy New Year , a year ago I came home with beautiful glass containers, right away my husband said (married 38 yr) that’s a big mistake “ lol he was right 😒
Great tips hun. You are so right. I just went through my kitchen and got rid of so much and my kitchen feels so light and freeing now. Great information. Tfs and happy new year 🎉.
Really great! I feel better for only keeping my favorite cookie cutters. I’m now scrutinizing the cupboard by the stove. All those toothpicks don’t need to be right in the most valuable area of the kitchen
I need to de clutter my cabinets for the third time! I’m going to try eliminating my glass jars and use the clips to keep it fresh... Thanks for the tips!🙂🌻
I bought new non-stick pans and my 13 YO Granddaughter has not been kind to them. She was using my metal spatulas to make pancakes and they are scratched up (actually gouged up) to where I really don't want to use them. I also notice that when washing them, the pan part is so heavy that it keeps twirling around as I hold the handle and try to wash them. Unfortunately, for some reason, cast iron is just too heavy for me to handle. Another issue I have is I have older Lock N Lock cereal containers and buying Family Size boxes don't fit (the extra bag you mentioned), so I got a couple of new containers that were bigger, but they are too tall to fit on the pantry shelves.....I can't win.
I went through a bunch of my kitchen stuff about 2 months ago. Managed to get rid of a bunch of stuff. Probably have more I need to part with but haven't been able to do so yet.
I should be decluttering rather than binge watching UA-cam videos! It is more fun though. I really do need to let go of things, so thanks for sharing! BTW, you will LOVE the new dutch oven. I haven't baked bread in mine [but will try one day], but love it for baking in the oven and stove-top for soups, etc. UPDATE: I did start cleaning out some drawers in the kitchen after watching this. I am always joking that my husband puts things in weird places. Well, I found the missing remote for the battery only operated Christmas tree candlestick lights in the drawer with the knives! Had I not watched this video, I probably would not have been cleaning -thanks!
I need you to come and declutter my home!! our stuff just takes over our life and its overwhelming and stressful. I try to start everytime and then I can never accomplish it😕
I love stainless steel and use it everyday and find it very easy to clean. Isn't it funny how different it can be!
I use stainless pans and recently discovered that if you add a small amount of water to dirty pan and bring to a boil, you can dump the gunk out without even scrubbing. Even gunk that you would soak overnight and still need to scrub. I wish I had known this over the last 50 years.
I never have to scrub my stainless. I rinse it out immediately or fill it up with water to sit for a few minutes when I start washing dishes.
Stainless steel is the least harmful pot/pan to use. It's very easy to clean with a bit of vinegar
I have stainless steel pans and I love them. Whatever sticks I use my cloth pad with no problem. I love that they still look new after ten years or more. They really do.
Natalie Bennett taught me about “budget of space” - like how you consider your kitchen cabinets as containers!
It had been a game changer for me.

Tip for the Jar method... shop at bulk stores where you can fill those jars. No waste, and you only buy what will fit in the jars!
Isn’t it amazing how we can always find more to declutter?! 😊 Same here.
Everything you said took me 20:years to learn. Great video.

I think we all go through this at the beginning of the year. It's amazing how much junk you can accumulate in a year. tfs
Good job.I decant my staple items and items that aren’t staples I leave in there bag or packaging. The non staple items usually get used quickly.
Nice to meet you! So glad Dawn pulled us together on this playlist. Taking things out of the packaging does make a difference. Love that approach.
Thank you for the motivation and organizing and purging is my favorite type of videos! Your kitchen looks beautiful!!!
Totally agree about jars had the same problem 🤗
Thank you for explaining the no jars! Every video that does that, I’m like, “I’m out.” I just don’t want to put my energy into that! Subscribing just because of the no jars. 😂
Haha you’re definitely not alone! 🤗
Lol it's just not practical
Oh my gosh. The struggle is real on the jars. I am right there with you. In addition you don’t really know the expo date!!
I'm inspired, and I will post videos of my progress on my channel. Your kitchen is so light and bright. I love it!
I not only purged my craft room but kitchen too. I feel so good to get rid of old stuff!
This is excellent advice, but I find it SO hard to do! It is like ripping off a band aid, that is stuck to a wound, you KNOW it has to be done, but it is so hard to just DO it! I agree it feels and looks great, once done! I am still here with my band aids stuck, working up the courage to rip them off!😂
Thanks Hillary. I don't like clutter in the kitchen or any part of my home but I'm sure there's areas you've inspired me to check up on!
We have been purging our entire home since boxing day. So funny that you are uploading this. Love it!!!
Thank you Hillary ! Let the decluttering begin ❤️
I don't even decant the flour or use canisters lol. Everything stays in its package it came in. Too much dishwashing for me to justify doing it. Cute is good but it defeats the purpose when it gives me more tasks and stress. As long as things are zoned into categories for quick access it's good enough for me.
Me too lol I also have overflow of flour when I have done this before
Very practical, I came up w the same idea too , love ur new look , beautiful hair cut💕💕💕
My daughter is 2 too and I holding on to bottles. O how it broke my heart to get rid of them and bibs. I dont really keep alot of stuff but when it comes to baby items my uterus is like nooo and my brain tells it to Shut Up!🤣🤣🤣
We are moving into a new home and my goal is to be more organized. Very excited to see your videos because your home is always so beautiful!
Moving is a great time to purge, before the move, when packing. (It's probably the only time I am truly ruthless with purging)
Hello Hilary , Thank you for the inspiration , now I'm going to sing in my kitchen as I declutter 🎶 Let it go 🎶 Let it go ☺
I do feel the canister system, although pretty, created more clutter.
You and Dawn from the Minimal Mom are two of my favorite UA-cam stars! Love that you are collaborating!
What good incentive today. I need to do exactly what you said. I have ordered new countertops to be installed sometime this month. I have to remove all the top drawers before they start. They tend to become catchalls do I will start there. Sometime we need a little push to get inspired. Thanks 👏👍
The flaxseed oil is great for seasoning and maintaining your cast iron
Yes that’s why we bought it but the smell was unbearable 😅
Okay, I just weeded out the Christmas ornaments and now you're challenging me to declutter the kitchen. Ouch! I opened up one cabinet and took out 6 jars that have no business in with the glasses. Looks like another revelation!
The kitchen can get cluttered so quickly. It seems like the clutter never ends. This is so helpful! I just posted a video where i decluttered and organized my pantry 🙏🏻 having a simplified kitchen is amazing. Great way to start the year!
Hi mariela.
Hey there, I’m going to check out your channel! I strive to live simply plus share thrifting videos on my channel 🙂🌻

I hope in the continuation of similar topic you also can make some videos for Frugal February!
Thank you for the inspiration!! I have been noticing lately all the "stuff"that has been accumulating. The new year is a good time to declutter. I have just been going so much recently but things are slowing down so there is no excuse anymore. I so needed to see this video today!
I'm starting this too. It's just me since my husband passed in December. I don't cook a lot so I only need a few pans. Thanks for the tips!
I’m so sorry for your loss, God bless
This is such a great video! I came over from the Clutter Bug :)
So glad I found your channel! Can’t wait to see all your videos to come!
I love decluttering ♥️♥️♥️
I use the snack containers to store ponies and rubber bands for kid's hair. It works perfectly.
Great video Hillary! This series is exactly what I need right now. :0) We spent much of our week between Christmas & New Year tackling half of our basement. Now the motivation to tackle the 2nd half!! :0)
I am not a jar person either. And I am also not an everything bagel seasoning person. 😁 Thank you for the inspiration, Hilary!
Love watching declutter videos. I am also decluttering this month.
I love that you totally make your own rules! So inspirational!
Really great! I feel better for only keeping my favorite cookie cutters. I’m now scrutinizing the cupboard by the stove. All those toothpicks don’t need to be right in the most valuable area of the kitchen
Hi Hilary! I’m definitely on board with this. I’m doing some decluttering myself 😊👍🏻.
Great video... thank you!🏡💕
This blessed me so much. So clear and simple. Thank you.
I need to de clutter my cabinets for the third time! I’m going to try eliminating my glass jars and use the clips to keep it fresh... Thanks for the tips!🙂🌻
Omg! That sugar bowl, I collect those dishes!
purging in the kitchen is something i really need to do!!! thank you!
Love your approach! TBH, it was your skeptical looks(lemon squeezer..) in the intro that pulled me to watch your video first!
Enjoyed this video 😊 practical hints for de-cluttering..TFS your ideas..🤔 ... ❤️🥰
HAPPY NEW YEAR! GOOD TO SEE YOU..GREAT TIPS SHARED TO THE BURGH!
Thank you for the practical hints. I dont have the patience or inclination to maintain a “Pinterest Pantry”
Great video, highly agree and am the same!
I try to start everytime and then I can never accomplish it😕
Very nice and yes, inspirational. Going to clean out some stuff I am holding onto for no reason whatsoever. LOL
Looking forward to your January videos!
