Mae West was a movie star, Broadway star, a playwright, screenwriter, singer...
Mae's career is very unique, she was 38 when she made her first film, and was very famous long before her movie career. She started out in Vaudeville in 1907 when she was 14 years old, and made her first appearence in a Broadway show in 1911. She starred in her first Broadway play in 1926, titled 'Sex', which she also wrote, produced and directed. It was a huge hit, but of course it was very notorious and risqué, and a year after it opened she was arrested and sentenced to ten days in jail for "corrupting the morals of youth." But it didn't hurt her career, it was great publicity.
Between 1932 and 1943 she made ten movies, the last one is The Heat's On. She made two more movies in the 1970's; Myra Breckinridge (1970) and Sextette (1978).
She wrote the screenplays/dialogue/(and/or) the original story to all of her movies.
She worked with Cary Grant in two movies: She Done Him Wrong and I'm No Angel. And of course, she worked with the great W.C Fields in the memorable comedy My Little Chickadee.
