      eggsriceandcheese True, but when there are students not able to pay for books and even some of the players who don’t get a free ride or even good scholarships, and the college is throwing it all at coaches and new stadiums, it kind of shows the true intentions of the school. And if the coaches make MILLIONS of dollars a year, surely they can take a bit of a budget cut to help students get an education they need to stay in todays economy. :/ Don’t get me wrong, they deserve a good pay, but colleges are for education, and it becomes infuriating when more money is thrown at sports, rather than education all the students can have.

    • @DarkBunnyLord
      @DarkBunnyLord 5 років тому +79

      eggsriceandcheese I get that the coaches bring in money but that doesn’t explain why the players are paid nothing. They’re also super important to the game last time I checked and even if you argue that the coach is more important as they train and plan everything out which I agree they are more important than most individual players the fact that the entire team as a whole makes a whopping 0$ shoots the entire argument that earning value is what determines pay in the foot.

      @@skele3310 Then by that logic how does every single person get into COLLEGE without playing football.
      You're entire argument is destroyed dude. My friend who literally was flat broke with no money during highschool got into a community college on a scholarship with a GPA of like 3.2?
      You act like you need to do physical sports inorder to get a scholarship which is a joke, if anything realistically scholarships for physical sports is the EASY way to get into college.
      You could have a crappy GPA no extra credit hours, no community service, nothing.
      All you need to do is be good at a sport and you get a full ride scholarship but "yeah" they are totally exploited
      That argument is beyond stupid. Its sad that yes everything is true about the dangers of football but that doesn't change the fact they aren't being exploited by given an opportunity to go to college for free.
      You can easily turn that down go to college via many different scholarships which are based by GPA & if they are a minority there is additional scholarships for them as well.
      So my point is if you try to make a stupid argument about them being exploited for "profit" that's a good joke.
      Also this statement below is extremely racist. Just because they are football players they lack the intelligence to do well in school and get a scholarship based on GPA? Because that's exactly what you are saying when you tell me its impossible for them to afford college without getting scholarships for a physical sport.

      but yes, continue to tell me how trying to improve society through critiques of capitalism are somehow racist.

      In those cases they would be in poverty because of their own choices which means its their fault. No one has a gun to your head forcing you to skip school or mess around in class. No one is forcing you to get bad grades and not go to afterschool tutor sessions which a vast majority of schools do for free.
      Majority of entry level jobs now even pay some amount towards colleges which I find is crazy, so yes probably about 30% of students aren't getting any crazy scholarships and they are going to college just fine.
      If you go to college for a legitimate field then you should easily be able to get a job, if you decide to go to college for lets say "Lesbian dance theory" then don't complain when you finally realize that college is a scam unless you're going into a "VERY" worthwhile field.

I feel no need to rebut anything the video said, because that's not what I was rebutting with my main comment, which was to point out that the commenter I responded to was either mistaken or lying about the recent status of player's likenesses with regards to video games.
      That said, if I did bother to rebut them, my main thesis would boil down to Mike's at 4:10; I like watching football, I like it being part of the culture, and I have evaluated the costs and benefits and feel that its worthwhile. As is obvious from the video, concerns about players' health are so closely tied to social, economic, and political objections that I suspect anti-football sentiments are tied to broader culture war issues that were boring to me back in the Bush 2 era, let alone now.

      If you make a stab at "most of the people commenting here," I assume you have a point of contention with them. "I like it and idc if it kills the people doing it and takes away from other people" isn't a very valid argument. You and I are some of the people who get all of the benefits and none (or very few) of the downsides, so our liking it is expected. But, we should also be aware of the effect it has on the people who need that money or who get those injuries. It's pretty bad for us to say "I think it's worth it" when we don't have any stakes in the matter. It's also a bit weird to say that just because an issue has been discussed for so long, it should be ignored.

    Real talk here. I suffered only a single, relatively "mild" concussion a year and a half ago, and STILL struggle with very REAL symptoms today. Even normal, everyday activities and stress I used to brush off before can sometimes make me reel and feel like my head is in a vice. My heart really goes out to these athletes who sustain these kind of brain injuries over and over and over and over. Just one concussion has the potential to change you, and Jessica is right about CTE. The saddest part is, by the time football players are finally able to retire from their sport, dementia, early onset alzheimer's and personality disorders are waiting just around the corner.

      @imlo2738 5 років тому +17

      Something you should maybe try to learn in college is that people are paid according to how much money they can generate. If you could lead a program that brings in 100 million+ per year for your bosses, you'd make a lot of money too.
      You can certainly take issue with it if you want or believe the athletes should be paid (I agree, they should), but trying to compare the worth to the school of the head football coach to a student going to classes makes no sense.

    • @imlo2738
      @imlo2738 5 років тому +2

      @Malum The OP didn't because they think that the amount a student pays in tuition has some correlation to how much football coaches get paid.
      As far as changing it...why? What does it matter to you what someone else gets paid? I can certainly understand wanting to see the athletes get paid (I agree with that), but the coaches are paid according to the success of the program. If the program generates 100s of millions, what do you think the coaches should get paid?
      Football is a money-maker for the school, plain and simple. The school wants to ensure their program is one of the best in the country so they continue to make that money. The two most important factors to winning is recruitment and coaching. The head football coach is responsible for both.
      So, the colleges can either pay coaches based on their worth to the school (which is millions) or they can pay some figure you'd be happy with and get a shit coach and see their program tank. Seems like a simple choice to me.
      Now you said you want to see this changed. How would you change it? In America you get paid based on what you can generate. That's capitalism. That's why a worker at McDonalds doesn't get paid as much as a doctor. Anyone can do the McDonalds job and it doesn't generate much revenue, while a doctor requires lots of education and can generate a ton of money for the hospital/organization, etc.

My answer every time NOPE!!
    Then the coach always says "You can't keep him sheltered forever, you gotta cut those apron strings lady". The only reason he wants him to play is cause he is 15 and 6 ft tall and weighs in at 170. • @billybobjoe198

      With student loans, economic inequality has nothing to do with it. Anyone can afford to go to any school they want. That's why we have a massive student debt crisis.
      And the entire idea that the fact that many top tier athletes are "minorities" isn't some massive conspiracy either. Races are all different and some are on average far better at certain things than others.

      byw thx, you said what I would have. Also, economic inequality isn’t a bad thing. Capitalism at its purest is equality of opportunity, and socialism is equality of outcome (economic equality, everyone gets paid the same no matter what). Every time we try one of those two options, it tends to destroy whatever country it got implemented in.

    And the crazy thing is Americans have always known this deep down inside. Even before the actual study’s came out I mean it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that smashing your body against another human being causes serious damage. One of the more famous stories of injuries is when a football player was paralyzed from the next down after taking a serious hit. That was before all the information came out about CTE which isn’t new information either. It’s a real dilemma because you could say it should go to the schools to help students but then comes the problem of profiting of others pain. This is why you need to pay the student athletes some of whom will never make it to the pros but will still have to live with the injuries.
