- Take a journey to the wilderness in a 1922 Studebaker for a classic vintage hunting and overnight camping trip! Nathanael Logsdon shows how to do it with 100-year-old gear and teaches some old fashioned, but worthy tricks for squirrel hunting.
Lots of folks have asked about the boots I wear in the video. These are available as new reproductions from www.logsdonand...

In a world so set on anger and chaos it's nice to see a wholesome guy who just enjoys a wholesome hobby. It's heart warming after a hard day.
Thanks! I really appreciate that. It's exactly what I was going for.
Well said
i wish i had the freedom to do this again😢 i love watching it tho
@@Moistpotatoman Why don't you have the freedom to do this?
My sentiments exactly.
It’s very neat seeing an accurate representation of what it was like to hunt 100 years ago. I have a Remington Model 6 Rolling Block built around 1912 I use occasionally for rabbit and squirrels. Those old .22s can be had dirt cheap in pawnshops and they all have their own character to them.
@DetroitThrowersget the fuck outa Illinois my boy, run and don’t look back
@DetroitThrowersif you aren't awful, move to Ohio. Our teams are as bad as the weather. But You're used to that.
@DetroitThrowers then did something about it.
@DetroitThrowers, we all know Illinois is a blue crap hole.
Yall should look into the invention of the cut shell, a quick method to convert bird, buck or even rat shot into a crude slug, this was done during the depression to save money but in theory could also be used for survival in situations where you need to hunt larger game but lack the higher accuracy and lethality offered by a mono projectile shotgun slug, this was not exactly invented during the 1920s but it was a common practice during the depression
Empty hands, but full heart. A grateful gentleman's words.
Thank you for sharing your adventure.
Well I didn’t know I was gonna see a man squirrel hunting with 1920’s gear but now I can’t get enough. I appreciate the effort that went into making this period correct and your video style is great. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for the kind words!
My only concern is the lack of high visibility clothing, if your out in the middle of nowhere by yourself it's less dangerous but you never know if someone else likes your spot and mistakes you for game (ir just didn't notice you in the brush and overpenitrated, my grandfather had a situation in the 50s or 60s where a group of friends where out hunting and another guy in another group was tragicly killed by a 12 gage slug that overpenned the brush line, they had sevral trained medical perosnel and sevral active and retired military personnel with combat lifesaving expirence but they really couldn't do anything, went right under his heart, guy was gone before he hit the ground saddly) please please please practice safe hunting practices and always bring emergency first aid and get first aid training even if your not going hunting solo, it could save your or someone else's life!
Bringing back thoughts of much simpler times. I wish we could turn back time. I love the old stuff
Please make more of these. This is really cool. Goes to show you don’t need modern gadgets & gizmos to get into the woods & hunt.
This is really neat! I've always found the late 19th to early 20th century so fascinating, and watching your stuff really reminds me of reading men like Horace Kephart and Townsend Whelen, and of course Theodore Roosevelt. Maybe it's just nostalgia for a time I never experienced, but there is something so oddly warm and interesting about the this time period, and seeing someone like you who is clearly very knowledgable on the subject matter tackle it with such passion and skill is fantastic! I'll be looking forward to you newer videos sir, you've got me subscription, and I look forward to your future videos!
What I really like about this genre, compared to other periods is there's no emphasis on military situations unless you're specifically doing WWI. There's a lot more opportunities for truly civilian reenacting without the threat of war. After years of doing military reenacting, that's refreshing!
Great comment 👍😁
Don’t forget Henry David Thoreau. You’re feedback is well put together : D
My hunting era is early 1800s
Good times
Reminds me somewhat of Sterling North's writings that era in Wisconsin as well.
Me too...I think I was born in the wrong time
Man I think if you did content like this more often your channel could take off. Vintage hunting, fishing, and camping could do really well. Really quality content man keep it up.
Thanks. Yeah, this has really surprised me how much people have enjoyed this. I have some more episodes planned along this same vein. It'll happen!
@@20thcenturyadventurescant wait! 😮
You had FUN and that's what it's all about sometimes... but in the 20's I might think you would have taken the shots that we might not otherwise take today. I know that when I grew up in the 1960's in a relatively poor family, even a 'gut' shot was meat on the table...not just squirrels, but woodchucks as well. You did VERY well on your own doing all that videography! I am impressed you were able to do that AND camp/hunt ! Loved the period accouterments and would love to see more ...and with a buddy perhaps!
My dad shot a deer in the butt because he need the food and that's all he could see
I wish we could go back to simpler times like this,
Grass is always greener. Reality is you can, just won’t give up modern luxuries too do so.
That's what makes what I am doing so much fun. I go to work and do all the modern things life requires, then every so often, I go get lost in the past for a weekend. It's cheaper than therapy! haha!
Great video.! Thank you so much
The great ole days. Good stuff. Its warming to the soul to watch you bring history alive.
Thanks! I love comments like these! It's what keeps me going!
This is awesome! I found it funny that the 50¢ used for the call was 15% of the cost of the rifle used haha.
cool retro-vibe. hunting with vintage guns always are great to hunt with.
This is an extremely satisfying video
I like studying the roaring 20’s, what I wouldn’t give to get to meet some of my ancestors from that time. Thank you for the video and I really liked the guns
I know it was over a decade ago, but It's amazing to see how an international show like Les Stoud's Survivorman has brought a solo filming style youtuber's quickly adopted.
Ironically, I've never watched any of his stuff. Lol!
Very interesting and well produced, thank you! 👍🇬🇧
Giving me some good eye drifting over here bud, this is definitely something I can sleep to, this is definitely a video I can come back to if I need to soothe myself from stress any day, thanks buddy
It was exciting to see 1920's era car camping come to life! What a wonderful touring car to take a party into the woods.
It is a beautiful day for motor car touring!
this is awesome! hope you upload another hunting video soon! it’s something unique that not a lot of people get from these other hunting channels
Just waiting for hunting season to start!
Do you hunt rabbit or other small game as well? Definitely would like to see more 1920s era hunting and camping videos.
@davidwilliams1383 yes, I do, and I have several more hunting videos planned.
That Henry was the first rifle I ever owned. My dad gave it to me when I was 8yr/o and I still have it. Very nostalgic rifle for me.
Bud, that was way cooler than I thought it would be when I clicked to watch! You gave a great insight to camping…the way it’s supposed to be done! Your honesty about the firearms for period correctness was very good too.
That was amazing❤
Big THANKS from Germany,
GR 🤙🏻
Thanks! Plenty more where that came from!
@@20thcenturyadventures I will have a Look at more of your stuff for sure 🫡
Great video brother and a great looking time! Make me think of warmer times :) Happy New Year my friend!
This was a great video! Please keep posting videos on 1920s hunting, camping, and fishing. Thanks!!!
Wonderful! So excited for this one.
Great stuff. I turkey hunt in the 1750s. I've deer hunted through the centuries. Up to the 50s in a woolrich outfit. Some of my older uncles use to tell stories about hunting trips in the 30s and 40s. In similar vehicles. Sometimes they would check with local farmers and get hay bales, to use for bedding.
Awesome! Keep it up! Thanks for sharing!
I ran hot bath, soaked in, and watched your video surrounded by warmth and my imagination took me on your adventure with you. I enjoyed it tremendously. The good Ole days.
Such a cool period in history! Thanks for bringing it back !
This genuinely brings a huge smile to my face, love everything about this, the vintage clothing, gear and firearms are just too good to beat!!
I'm 60yo I use to hunt squirrels I was a young boy I always see a 410ga rifle it was the best ever and I still have it to Remington model single shot love it
This is really cool more please
This is awesome, hopefully the algorithm will push this on more people
Amy and I punched this up on the full sized screen last to enjoy it to its fullest- loved it! Totally agree with your comment about the time in the trees being the most important part and did not know about your clean socks tip! The part where you said you had too many guns along reminded me of every time I pack before we all get together; it starts with "seriously only packing two this time" but when I look at the pile of things I might need, 3/4 of what I own is there- LOL.
Man what an amazing video! I love the 20’s era. Thank you
Love pov behind wheel.
Simple equals cool.
My first gun was from great depression era said my grandpa bought it for 12.00 new 22 rifle winchester with the spring handle firing pin on back..
UA-cam randomly blessing me again with a really cool idea for a show that should be better… really underrated moment In History
Well, I suppose you could put your money where your mouth is and buy a $25k antique car, learn how to repair and maintain it, hunt down thousands of dollars worth of antique camping gear, do a ton of research, buy a couple grand worth of camera gear, and go out there into the woods and make a better video. Or you could stop making rude comments about things you know nothing about...
20 seconds in and the old time music has already got me vibin
The tie got me. 😂 Happy hunting!
Ties were everyday wear for centuries! The 90 year old lady I bought my farm from said she could remember men going squirrel hunting in the 1940s, wearing ties and jackets. Lots of photos of folks hunting in ties. In fact, it really helps keep your neck warm, too! Wool ties are awesome.
I really appreciate you bro.
I just found and subscribed. I love living history and this time period is under represented.
Glad to have ya! I have a lot more great episodes planned, so keep in touch!
Reminds me of what my grandaddy taught me when I was about 11 years old.
Great video thanks for sharing it with me love the car and I love squirrel hunting and the beautiful fall colors and camping in the woods
this looks like a lot of fun
Great video! I'm so glad that someone is still doing things the old ways.
Where I live we have always squirrel hunted with dogs. As a kid I went squirrel hunting using hound dogs with my grandpa many many times and I loved hearing him tell the stories of him hunting with his father and grandfather. I just lost my father and mother a year ago me and my dad used to go squirrel hunting together all the time with an old hound dog named drum. I cherish those memories and miss those days very badly it was a simpler time and a better way to live
I hope you find that again one day sir. Truly
Ethical hunting and lots of good information. Well done!
Looks like the algorithm has blessed this video, and I’m glad it has! I’m so happy I came across this video in my feed. What a perfect mix of learning and entertainment. I really enjoy history and the outdoors so your channel is a perfect fit for me. I especially enjoyed the little details about the equipment you used. The cooking parts were a great bonus too!
Be sure to subscribe, because there's more like this coming as I can get them done.
thanks for the camping trip and hunt, really injoyed this.
it's so weird to see what could be a situation straight out of last century in full HD, color, and audio, really cool!
My granddaddy and great uncle tell me about squirrel hunting. Even claim to have ran into Bonnie and Clyde in snake ridge Louisiana. Have to say. The story… incredible. Thank you so much for this video
Thank you for the enjoyable content
I feel your comment " not as young as I used to be".... Good video ole buddy I enjoyed it.
Mate, that's an awesome video! Mindblowing car 👍👍👍 and great guns!
hey nathan !! glad you're here !!
I grew up squirrel hunting and still go out a couple times a year. I still use my grandpa's old gun that's from this era. This was very interesting to me.
Damn, that lap-robe is something i didn't know i needed. Cool!
To me these videos absolutely reek of Wind in the Willows nostalgia... more please Mr Toad! I hunt moose, elk, and mule deer using a canoe to access remote areas most years, and while my gear is more modern those hunts really feel like a throwback to elder days of outdoorsmanship. In 2016 I used an inherited Lee Enfield rifle that was stamped as being made in 1916, and was fortunate to take a young bull moose with it. That remains a standout hunting memory for me
That's awesome. I usually hunt with all vintage gear. I enjoy I more, and it gives me that same connection to the past.
Also, the Wind in the Willows is my all-time favorite book! Nice reference!
@@20thcenturyadventures I too use allot of vintage outdoors gear, Husqvarna rifles from the late 50's, a Browning Trombone .22, a WWII era canvas day pack, Mitchell 300 reels. Honestly though, I mostly use that stuff because its what works best for me, and I dont really even consider it "Vintage" as there is no actual handicap. Lee Enfields are the only thing I use for nostalgic reasons. BTW, I really like that tarp, where did you get it?
@bushleague3472 those tarps are available from Tentsmiths.com. They are the best! Made from canvas oilcloth.
At 17:22 he totally reminds me of Elmer Fudd. "Ssshhh Im hunting Wabbits" tip toeing through the woods 😆😆😆 Great video though man, I enjoyed it.
Also, something to think about next time you camp is to put a sleeping matt or even cardboard down to lay on, cause it insulates you from the ground. The ground will suck the heat right out of you. You'll go to sleep nice and warm, wake up 3 hours later freezing. I know this was a period piece, so I get why you didn't do that, but just for when your not camping 1920's style :)
What a great video. Well done.
The hunt isnt about killing , its the hunt itself that counts. As for rain IVE spent days hunting squarriels and have often got several in the wet woods.nice video
Thanks. Yes, that's always been my policy, too. I love being in the woods, no matter what happens. Except high wind. Then it's time to get OUT of the woods! Haha!
Love that car!
Bravo great video. I would fit right in my grandfather's Winchester Model 12. I was never happier than when I realized I can make that cutting sound with my cheek that way I don't need to ditch Loose Change while I'm trying to aim at a squirrel LOL
I own a 1923 model T Ford that I use as a daily driver. I’ve wanted to do some camping with it … bought a vintage tent and cooker and am ready to go. Enjoyed your video immensely.
I highly recommend checking out rhe Amalgamated Order Of Motor Campers group on Facebook, if you haven't already done so.
Just found your channel. Very nicely done Sir. Love the hunting coat.
Thanks! My wife made it!!
What a great video!! Thanks!
this was very cool ty sup up for the next one
This was very entertaining.
It reminds me of some of my early deer hunts back in the 60's.
I enjoyed going along with you on your camping/hunting trip.
Silence is a true friend who never betrays.
I used to be in a hunting camp here in Pennsylvania that was in the Allegheny National Forest. It had a 99 year lease. The founders a great grand father and other farmers used to take bales of hay and build a sort of outline of a house and strew it on the floor. Then cover the floor with a tarp. And cover with hay and blankets at night. Until a year they could get enough stuff down there to build a wooden camp.
Good times. B
They built it around the depression.
Super cool. I'm sure you could feel your ancestors...or at least thought deeply about them being there standing in the same place many years ago.
This would be so awesome to live like this! We want more of these videos!!!
Ask and ye shall receive! I'm editing a great camping one now that I hope to have up by the end of the month!
Ahhhh. The original coffee percolator. Good stuff.
Just ran across your channel and it’s fantastic I like all of that older stuff you had on this adventure
You might be one of the only people i want to meet in life bc this seems to be a better way of living life. Calm, peaceful and full of imaginative wonder!
I wish I could live this way all the time. Unfortunately, I have to go to a real job in a real city... lol! But maybe someday... it's a great way to spend weekends, though.
My older eyes prefer a scoped .22 or my Winchester Model 12 16 gauge from 1935. Subscribed!
I am amazed. This content is a window back in time
This content is so cool, i need more!
Thanks! I've got a whole bunch of great ideas, but with a full time job, a small farm, and 4 kids, there isn't a lot of time. Filming a new episode next weekend, however, and it's gonna be a good one!
@@20thcenturyadventuresSounds good I’ll look forward to it!
I gasped when he drov eup in the old car, awesome already lol.
Very cool I like that, kind of makes me want to live in them times
Super cool content, really glad I stumbled upon this. Looking forward to more outdoors themes episodes
I like your style partner, you come to Georgia and I can put us on some squirrels! Thanks for taking us along.
Sounds like fun! Georgia isn't very far.
Awesome video. Great content. I really enjoyed watching this. It really felt ike i was watching a real squirrel hunting trip from that time period nice job
Hipsters are always a good source of amusement.
Awesome video! Would love to see a tour/driving video of the Studebaker
@Patman5678 it's getting a valve job at the moment, but eventually we will do that!
you live the life I wish to live, I am jealous and intrigued.
Anyone can do it. You just have to go out and do it!
Great video. I've wanted to do a time period hunting trip for a long time and it was fascinating to see your set up and everything. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your content.
Well done! Thanks for taking the time to make this for us to enjoy! I love hunting and fishing but the part I enjoy the most is, like you said, just being out in nature and everything it has to offer, especially this day and time!
I just found this episode and this channel at the same time by accident. Outstanding content and as a major of history and big history buff, you earned a lifetime subscriber. 5 🌟 and hats off to you and your desire to show history. Thank you!!
Made by a historian for historians. Lol!
YES YESS ABSOLUTLY DAVE WESSCOT .I love I subbed fantastic
Dang. Last time i saw you, you were showing me the John Work house! Awesome that you do stuff like this, man!
G'Day from Australia,
I enjoyed watching your video. Spending time in the forest or "the bush" as we we call it in OZ helps to revitalize the spirit and body. I sometimes head out with a single shot .22 rifle that belonged to my late father in law. It is about 90 years old. Often I don't bag a rabbit but the high point of the day is lighting a fire and cooking up a simple meal, usually bacon and eggs washed down with tea or coffee, much as you did. A simple pleasure. Watching your video made me think of Hemingways 'Big Two-Hearted River"--a favourite outdoors story for me and I'm sure others. I look forward to watching more of your videos. I've also subscribed to your channel.
Cheers,
Steve
So wonderful! The work! This make the world just a little better. Thanks!❤ I fantasize about tearing up the streets with a 1920s roadster, Wooster style, listening to Rudy Valley at 11!
My gran dad who has passed showed my that trick with the quarters but swore that two 50 cent pieces worked better. And by God he was right. Although using them to simulate that sound of nut cutting is great I will use that this fall. Wonderful video I enjoyed it.
I love the historical reenactment but as a modern squirrel Hunter the most effective way of hunting squirrels is in suburban areas with an air rifle. Great video love the camping hunting combo, squirrel is really an underrated game animal theses days.
There are plenty of modern hunting videos out there. I wasn't going for a hunting video. I made a history video about hunting. 😉
This is awesome, man. Thank you for taking the time to record and upload your adventure for all of us to watch and experience
Definitely need more outdoor adventures
I've got a bunch planned, and several will be filmed this winter.
My grandparents would have wished squirrel hunting was that plush in the 20s or 30s! Blankets and pillows and cars...
I didn't bring a pillow. But lots of folks dud hunt this way in the period. I have plenty of original photos and accounts to back that up. Certainly not all, but plenty did.
Next time try leaving the tie at home squirrels just don't like ties in the woods awesome video enjoyed watching it
How do you know squirrels don't like ties? I like to see the research on that one. Lol! Anyway, in this period, it was very common to wear a tie while hunting. It was part of everyday attire at this time. Furthermore, it keeps the neck warm!
Awesome and very enjoyable
