    Wow, so interesting that Mark Steinmetz's comments about the modern trend of people placing greater value on interesting photos over beautiful photos resonated with you. Since receiving Fine Airs & Fine Graces a couple of weeks ago, I've spent considerable time contemplating what is 'different' about your book compared with others in my collection that has made it my most treasured street photography book. The answer I came up with is; you seem to be drawn to, and connected with the beauty of people and place, whilst being adept at capturing it in a most sympathetic and elegant way that is just not very common in contemporary street photography. Your book, for me at least, really does stand out from the crowd and appeal to my sensibilities with it's old world charm. I thank you sincerely for your own contribution of beautiful photographs to the genre.
    Kind regards.

      Josh just showed me this comment and I think it’s one of the nicest, most considered ones we’ve had so far. Thank you.

      You're most welcome.
      If I could contribute to your upcoming Q&A, I would be most grateful to know what each of you value in street photography as an artform? Why do you do it, what does it offer yourselves, or society, that compels you both to devote time and energy to it?

    Great video and content as always! The Q looks like a perfect street shooter 🙏🏻

    Leica Q is an amazing camera, especially for street photography, discreet and quiet with a perfect focal length. I use the M240 with 50mm Summicron f/2 and find the Q more equitable due to the automation features for quick street shooting. The Vario-X is another unspoken camera in the Leica line-up that is also equipped with automation features and a 28-70 mini zoom, all producing the unique Leica color rendition and sharpness. My next project is to sit down and make photo books instead of buying photo books of other photographers work. All photographs look amazing in a book format because you tend to limit just the best shots...great video and advice...

    Who said.... "if you're not in there, get closer. If you're not closer, you're not close enough" I love the 28mm focal length. My 1st choice is 40-45mm, but 28mm is my second. But Frank Horvat holy hula hoops what a good photo book. Loved the shots you took, cheers.

      Robert Capa said something like that ‘If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough’ but he was a war photographer and was talking about being close to the story, rather than physically close. :) The Horvat book is really great. I love the diary entries

    Question for the next Q&A: if you both had to choose 1 digital and 1 film camera with only one film stock to use for the next year, what would it be ?

    Hah I never heard about Horvat. It is my name too with a 'h'. It's a very common hungarian name and as I see his father was hungarian.
    He lived 92 years? Damn! How lucky he was! Thanks for showing his work!

    Excellent, Shane! The Q is great - I don't take mine out as much as I should. I haven't had the playback issue - but I don't use the thumb grip and I have playback turned off. I have had it freeze several times where I had to yank the battery out. I've also accidentally hit the video record a few times, but disabled that too.

    • @frame-lines
      @frame-lines  3 роки тому +1

      I had that freezing issue once when I first got it- I put it down to it not being used in a while. I really should try it without the thumb grip- curious to know what you’ve assigned the FN customs buttons to?

    With the Q that I picked up last month, I ditched the thumb grip in favor of the hand grip, twisting the ON/OFF switch from the top if I remember it, mostly ignore the EVF (eyeglass & left eye dominant), taped up the Mic, speaker and diopter dial, use Nikon compatible flash (triggering voltage checked) on Auto mode at the time being, maybe switching to 3rd party lens hood to use pinch lens cap, lens hood hat instead of Leica's lens cap, etc.

    • @frame-lines
      @frame-lines  3 роки тому

      Good suggestions. I did read about the dirt issue and the mic / speaker holes causing dust but I haven’t taped mine up yet. I might try it without a thumb grip for a little bit - the hand grip seems more than adequate really

    Leica q-p is one of my dream cameras 🤙🏼 currently rocking just the x100v. Maybe one day I’ll make it to a q-p. One day. Hahaha

      I also shot with the X100F for a while but got my hands first on the Titanium Q and then sold that and bought Fuji again lol......and now back to Q but then finally got my Q-P, its the best looking camera i ever had and it really cured me of wanting any new cameras. Hope you can get it, the prices should be going down soon on it. Its a dream camera for sure:)

    The good thing about this 28mm camera is, you can crop to any focal length as you have plenty of megapixels to do so.
    I previously owned an M9 with a 35mm Leica lens but if I were to buy Leica again, I’d buy the Q2.

    • @frame-lines
      @frame-lines  3 роки тому

      That does interest me about the q2 specifically because of the higher megapixel count. I’ve seen examples of the 75mm crop and it totally looks viable

    • @victorcarmelo8606

      @@frame-lines I can confirm that. I use the zoom settings all the time on my Q2 especially when I need more reach and knowing that the DNG file is unaffected. If I need to process the latter, the Jpeg give me a marker of what my intentions were when I originally took the shot. Your Q might be better in low light then the Q2 though with the 24 sensor.

    Nice one! Curious how you feel about the Q vs the X100V and X-Pro3? Does the EVF feel outdated given the age of the Q?

    • @frame-lines
      @frame-lines  3 роки тому +3

      It doesn’t feel outdated at all. Its big bright and clear and It’s the same resolution as the xpro3. There might be a difference between the xpro3s oled evf but I wouldn’t say it’s hugely noticeable

  • @danielfeatherstone674
    @danielfeatherstone674 3 роки тому

    Definitely has the Leica look. 28mm too wide for my taste though. I agree with you in terms of trying new things. However in terms of longevity I'd contradict that and say stay consistent with camera/lens/processing etc as this will be a contributing factor to developing your own style over time.

    • @frame-lines
      @frame-lines  3 роки тому

      I definitely see that point and there are some brilliant photographers who have stuck to that, but I’m a fan of guys like Harry Callahan and Gordon Parks who tried their hand at everything and were happy mixing it up with equipment. If your style is strong enough it can show through regardless of the format.

    Any thoughts on the Ricoh GRIII? What are the odds of trying it out? Ha! I love your color grading in the images. Editing is my weakest point now in my photography journey. Please do an edit video from start to finish. 😂 Thank you and as always awesome content.

    • @frame-lines

      I’d love to try one. I had a Ricoh GRII for a year when I was back in Dublin and loved it. I only moved away from it when I decided I wanted to spend more time in the viewfinder. I tried an optical hotshoe one but it felt wrong 😅

    I should add, that you now need a permit from the TfL Film office, before filming or making photos, otherwise you could be fined.

      A permit is required for a big film crew or if you’re getting in the way with a tripod etc. It’s also up to tfl employees discretion at the time. Btw, TfL have shared our pictures on their social media.

    I think with beginners Shane, the Leica Q is simply the wrong camera to buy. Granted, a lot of people have been shooting street photography for a good while but unless you're well versed with a 28mm focal length and you are really (and I mean really) comfortable approaching people, this camera strikes me as the complete wrong gear piece to carry around. For the ridiculous obscene price and simple fact that you cannot change lenses, there are far better, and needless to say more affordable, choices out there. Love the channel, keep creating guys 🙏

    • @SourPlanet
      @SourPlanet Рік тому

      I don't think I've ever seen anyone in any space online or offline refer to any Leica camera as a beginner piece of kit. They're well established as a luxury photography brand with value retention and quality results.

    Do you have any issues with the UK Police force whilst shooting pics on the streets? I ask because I see many many YT vids whereby the police are abusing their powers and arresting people for just carrying out a hobby in public photography, in some cases the police use violence towards the photographer.
