FNN: Martin Shkreli Appears at House Hearing on Drug Pricing, Refuses to Answer Questions

  • (AP) - Pharmaceutical chief Martin Shkreli has arrived at a hearing where U.S. lawmakers want to hear from about severe hikes for a drug sold by a company that he acquired. But it's unlikely the former CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals will answer questions in his appearance Thursday before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Shkreli, widely scorned for hiking the price of a long-established and potentially lifesaving drug by more than 5,000 percent, has said he's exercising his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. The 32-year-old Shkreli faces separate criminal charges of securities fraud related to another drug company. Also going before lawmakers is the interim CEO of Canada's largest drugmaker, Valeant Pharmaceuticals. Both companies have sharply raised prices for drugs taken by patients with heart problems, AIDS, cancer and other conditions.

    I have a serious problem. My well being depends on me purchasing new iPhones and iPads. But greedy Apple keeps raising the prices of it's products. Apple should to be sued for charging so much for their devices. I only have $10 to spend but if I can't buy a new iPad Air I will probably die from depression. Please almighty government, sue these this evil company and make them charge less money for their products.

      if you're well being depends on buying Apple products, then you have a psychological problem. The government will not do what they're doing to Skreli. Instead, they most likely will treat your psychological disorder. Your comparison is irrelevant to this situation.

      dmctztv That's a farce... it's an excuse used to justify these exorbitant price increases. These price increases only help the pockets of the big pharma guys and their shareholders. If they wanted to solve the crisis of patients not being able to get their medicines, they'd lower the prices to a reasonable amount and everyone would be able to get the drugs. Don't be fooled, and don't be a shill.
      PS: I work in Pharmacy, and these prices not only affect the patients, but also the small independent mom and pop pharmacies that have to lay out 1000$ for a bottle of 30 pills and at times not even get paid for it.

    • @nicolaxoxo1
      @nicolaxoxo1 8 років тому

      Purposly
      don't understand your comment "why do I care now when I haven't in the past?" I have ALWAYS cared about this issue as I and many family members have paid thousands out of pocket in medical expenses and pharmaceutical costs. Currently I buy some of my scripts from Canada because I am impoverished (due to said expenses) and can no longer afford to buy them in this country. The same durgs BRAND name not generics, cost a tenth of the cost from Canada. Something is VERY wrong with our system. As for Mr. Shkreli, hopefully one day we will get to see the live stream of him getting sentenced to jail time....one day that smirk might get wiped off his face. Even if what he did was somehow legal, it is still despicable and he has no compassion for anyone. A true sociopath, he has no remorse or concern for the misery and deaths he has caused.

    He raised the price of the drugs to get insurance to pay for it. He has said on his live stream that if people come up to him and tell him they cant afford it, even with insurance, that he will pay. People that are against this guy do not realize that drug companies raise prices like this just about every month. It is just because he is new to the pharma companies and not "recognized" that he is getting all of this attention in the media and are depicting him to be a bad guy. When really he is just doing things the big companies do all the time.

    I really don't see why people hate this guy? He bought the patent legally (so it's the Government's fault) then he makes it easier for people without insurance to be able to get the treatment. All he did was charge people with insurance more for the treatment. To all extent and purposes he's making the treatment more available.
    Having him as a poster child of pharma seems wrong. People just wanted an easy scapegoat so they made do with him. The real issue are the insurance companies who charge ridiculous prices to keep you alive or the American healthcare system that allows people to bankrupt themselves if they become ill.

    This whole situation is proof of where evil truly lies, it is primarily found in men of good intention who have no understanding of matters they involve themselves in. Martin Shkreli is simply fighting against the nationalised insurance industry, itself a product of good intentions gone horribly wrong.

I appreciate that these may be long words for someone that uses the term 'g' so let me enlighten you: this guy bought the rights to a life saving and at one point very affordable HIV drug, and proceeded to increase the price from around $1 per pill, do about $750 per pill. He is profiting off the suffering of the most vulnerable in society and then abusing the outdated, medieval, but for some reason revered constitution to avoid answering a single question in court. Please refrain yourself from patronising me and move on to annoy someone else, i highly doubt someone of your statue would even conversate with me in real life therefore write your paragraphs to some other person who cares about your views.. Question here, if he is only charging insane amounts to pharma companies, won't they pass the charges on to the end consumer who needs the pills? People keep on saying you get the pills for "FREE" (free? Not sure I buy that) if you don't have insurance, but if you have insurance the cost for the pharma is greater. Won't they just pass it on to the consumer anyways? Is that not the problem? Surely you can't just say, "well those people should just get uninsured to get it for free."

    I actually like Mr. Shkreli even more. Wake up people, just as Thrasymachus proclaims "justice is nothing else than the interest of the stronger. Congress has no right to go for this business transactions. Even if he raised the price of the drug, as a rational person who is designed to take the best interest of himself, what he did was just like the whole health care industry. All Shkreli is doing is making money of the insurance costs. People pay thousands of dollars over their lifetime in having insurance and a large percentage is not utilized or even used. When a non-life insurance company closes a contract to provide insurance against loss, the revenues (premiums) expected to be received over the life of the contract are called gross premiums written. of the Of the $4.640 trillion of gross premiums written worldwide in 2013, $1.274 trillion (27%) were written in the United States. so basically 1 / 4 of the insurance premiums (profits) are based in the US. That in itself is crazy. People need to rationalize and figure out its either your eaten or being eating. Just like auto insurance. You can pay insurance for years and not get into any accidents effectively costing you thousands of dollars over the lifetime, and when you do get in an accident, insurance companies compensate for amount that is written off by increasing your premiums. In essence they maintain the premium revenue.

    What the hell is going on? Is there is specific price he is required to have the drugs at?? What specifically is the law? If it's not illegal you must assume people might exploit it. Other charges are a different story.

    I was just talking to a co worker about a similar situation... and it goes if one company raises there priceses excessively then that would open up a gate way for smaller businesses to put him out of business! Their acting as if he has the only drug pharmacy on the planet earth and his decision to rise his prices effected the whole world for eternity... I can understand that the panel of judges and lawyers that stand before him, seem to be good people that want him to be a good person but at the end of the day let him go as they did and continue to lead by example!

      MrPewpyPants I don't believe a word of it. Besides, everyone keeps going on as if the only people that end up losing out are the insurance companies, where do you think they'll recoup their losses? They'll bump up everyone's premiums, so in the end everyone is worse off, apart from this anemic man-child.

    Not the first or last to say this, but Mr. Shkreli is a textbook psychopath. Look at the expression Mr. Shkreli makes at 7:42 when Mr. Cummings suggested he had done something wrong. Mr. Shkreli actually believes he's done nothing wrong. He is literally sentencing sick people to death and cannot empathize. Very sad.
