I think king Bhumipol his father the late king must have been very disappointed in his heir! King Bhumipol was a tireless worker , lived simply and all for his people. Always finding ways to improve their lives. I have been to thailand twice and met many of the lovely people. Too sad they have to live under this present king.
Sadly,King Bhumipol had only a son and didn't have a nephew. Therefore,Maha Vajiralongkorn was appointed as the crown prince.There were no spares.

The tragedy of the 4 sons being “disowned” by their father may have turned out to be a positive thing. They all seem to know what hard work is and are all well educated. Growing up as “royalty” in Thailand could have been a curse for them to live a private, normal life with empathy for others.
The sons of His Majesty made their own decision to give up their royal family names. Lots of inside stories have not been made in public until now. Btw, the King Rama 9 was very much concern for the well beings of his grand children, he gave sufficiient funds to the kids and their mother so they could live abroad happily. The true cause why the 2 nd wife was dispursed from Thailand has not been disclosed but her famliy gained lots of benefits while she was in the palace.

I am Thai and I want to give you a little bit of Thailand history.
If Thailand doesn't have monarchy, Thailand and Thai people would be in big trouble like our neighbors.
When European colonial powers threatened in the 19th and 20th centuries, Thai monarchy managed to escape as the ONLY country not to fall under colonial rule.
This is the reason why monarchy is very important to Thailand and Thai people. I can't speak for all Thai people but every single Thai person that I have known we love and proud of our Monarchy System. It saves us from greedy politicians so many time in the past and saves us from communism as well.
