  • This is the extraordinary story of Master Sergeant Raul ‘Roy’ Benavidez, the Lazarus soldier, and of his three lives. This outstanding individual never surrendered in the face of adversity, from childhood to military life. Those who know his story mostly remember him for a six hour Calvary, during which, to great personal sacrifice he held at bay an entire battalion of North Vietnamese infantry to save eight wounded comrades. But how did he get there? And what happened afterwards?

I met Roy in 1994 in San Antonio. You'll have a hard time finding a more humble, brave man. He died a few years later, but what a life. God rest his soul.

Wow Karl, you lucky man. Im a Kiwi and we had a WW11 guy like Roy, Charles Upham, he won the Victoria Cross not once but Twice in WW11 but he was lucky and didnt get as badly shot up. Roys story actually made me well up when the Stars and Stripes song played in the background those few seconds. Real hard men are usually humble like Roy and Captain Upham. May they both Rest in Peace.

@@CRAIG5835 I lived in San Antonio. Met him at the Commissary shopping. I had heard his story from my dad and knew about his MoH citation. I walked up, said "Are you MSgt Benavidez?" He said "yes son, I am. How are you?" I said who I was and that I was proud to meet him, and even though I was in the Marines that everyone had heard of who he was and what he did and he was a true inspiration to everyone. His eyes got a little misty and he said "Son, I really am glad you feel that way, but the real heroes are the guys we buried, who gave everything to keep us all free.." I told him I agreed but that his example of sacrifice and devotion was truly something to admire. He thanked me, shook my hands, and said god bless you and I walked away. Several years later, I heard of his passing, and I wept, not gonna lie or try to say otherwise.

@@ChipmunkRapidsMadMan1869 I've met a few "celebrities" over the years. I can tell you with honesty, that the men and women I've met in VFW halls, and especially those that are decorated in our various conflicts, have been more meaningful and worthwhile than any "celebrity" encounter I've had. I never ask anyone for their autographs, just to show appreciation and admiration. The military folks (of which I am one) tend to be more humble, and indeed, more human in their response and demeanor. They don't run around like someone owes them something, or that they are in any way "above" things.

I read Roy's book as a young paratrooper. Years later I had a chance to run into him and his wife in El Paso in a small restaurant. I summoned the courage to go over and speak with him. Being a Special Forces officer previously we had a commonality. He invited me to site and visit, but I declined. His wife graciously asked me to please site with them. I left my friends across the restaurant and had dinner with the Benavidez's. It was a wonderful evening with two very gracious guests. As I left I picked up the tab and wrote across it "Airborne! Thanks for the camaraderie."
I was even more impressed by what a great man he was, having spent the evening having dinner with a hero in war and peace. They were very sweet people.

@@MonumentToSin , any person who is willing to put their life on the line for the benefit/safety/protection of the many/their country is truly deserving of the highest levels of respect and the fact that our government doesn't consistently provide this really is such as shame. If actors, musicians/artists, and athletes were just paid a 3rd less of what they are currently paid and have this 3rd go to servicemen/vets of our country, I'm sure there would be a significant improvement in their standard of living and they wouldn't experience as many of the problems as they currently do. Not everyone can be put thru a literal meat grinder like Benavidez here and still manage to make it out in one piece. Not to sound like a Communist or anything like that, but let's be honest here, if all those I mentioned were paid a 3rd less (Or even a quarter if that's too much), they would still be able to live a lavish lifestyle far surpassing what many of us could even still fathom anyway and by doing so we'd be treating those who protect this country with the anount of respect, honor and care they sure as hell deserve for the Hell they oftentimes put themselves thru. I know my point is a little off topic from your comment, but it's just something that I feel isn't always emphasized strongly enough especially when these are the true heroes many of us should aspire to.

Every now and then a story comes along that is about valor, sacrifice, and courage in the face of unthinkable circumstances... and more often than not in these cases the person was "Just doing his duty." Duty has become a four letter word.... my answer to these people who consider it worthless is as follows... Loyalty Duty Respect Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, Personal courage. To some of us, these will never stop being vital. Worth living and dying for, those who do not understand may say what they wish they cannot tarnish the meaning of those words.

In 1976, Benavidez, his wife, and their three children returned home to El Campo, Texas. He devoted his remaining years to the youth of America, speaking to them about the importance of staying in school and getting an education. His message was simple: "An education is the key to success. Bad habits and bad company will ruin you."
In 1983, Benavidez told the press that the Social Security Administrationplanned to cut off disability payments he had been receiving since his retirement, as well as the disability payments for thousands of other veterans. He went to Capitol Hill and pleaded with the House Select Committee on Aging to abandon their plans, which they finally did.
Benavidez was in demand as a speaker by United States armed forces, schools, military and civic groups, and private businesses. He also spoke in Greece, Panama, Korea, and Japan, where he visited American military personnel and even joined them on field exercises. He received complimentary letters from students, service members, and private citizens throughout the world.
He wrote three autobiographical books about his life and military experience. In 1986, he published The Three Wars of Roy Benavidez, which described his struggles growing up as a poor Mexican-American orphan, his military training and combat in Vietnam, and the efforts by others to get recognition for his actions in Vietnam. Benavidez later wrote The Last Medal of Honor (Texas: Swan Publishers, 1991) with Pete Billac and Medal of Honor: A Vietnam Warrior's Story in 1995.
Roy Benavidez died on November 29, 1998, at the age of 63 at Brooke Army Medical Center, having suffered respiratory failure and complications of diabetes. His body was escorted to St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, where he had married, his three children were married, and he attended Mass every Sunday. His body was then returned to Fort Sam Houston's Main Chapel for a public viewing. Family friend Archbishop Patrick Flores of the Archdiocese of San Antonio (now archbishop emeritus) presided over a Catholic funeral Mass at San Fernando Cathedral located in San Antonio.
Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez was buried with full military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
No one wants to see a sucessful Mexican immigrant fight for patriotism and American values. Liberals included.😂😂😂
Idk about anyone else in the south, but if you had family in the military, didnt have to be special forces, you heard of Mr. Benavides.
It's sad that his legacy has been reduced to some trollish UA-cam lists.
    Try reading his books.

During the early 1990s I had the great privilege of being chosen to attend seminar held
in Nashville,TN conducted by the Department of Defense. One of the highlights of this
seminar was an address by Medal of Honor winner MSG Roy Benavidez. I had the great
honor of not only meeting Roy, but also of spending some one on one time with him.
MSG Benavidez was not only an awesome warrior but also a very humble and self
effacing individual. I remember the brief period of time that I spent with MSG Benavidez
as the highlight of my attendance at that meeting. As a fellow Vietnam War veteran
(although by no means a war hero myself) I hold Roy and his fellow M.O.H. comrades
in the highest respect. Roy was truly a person who brought great credit and honor to the
U.S. Military, to the Great State of Texas, and to all U.S. citizens. Remember that he made
these sacrifices not just to help rescue some fellow American soldiers, but also to save
a group of Montagnard soldiers ; members of one of the most discriminated against
minorities in South Vietnam who no the less remained loyal to the same government
that was oppressing them. NOW THAT'SS A HERO!
