Young Guns 1 & 2 are so underrated IMO.
Superb. Guns 2 is great
Both are nostalgic for me, but I love the sequel. The soundtrack is so good.
Underrated??! Flat out ignored…this is a true gem
Agreed. It's one of my all time favs.
@@jrobwoo688 Alan Sylvestri right? The score is great. Guns 2 is my favorite
Emilio Estevez's best role. It's like he was born to play Billy the Kid. Young Guns 2 is good as well. I don't think it's as good as this one but still worth watching.
Young Guns II is pretty good but they change the events a ridiculous amount from the actual history.
I know it's entertainment and not a documentary but it's annoying when a major character is killed in the movie who lived another 30 years...just because that characters actor didn't want to come back for another movie (no spoiler).
Emilio did awesome job playing as billy but I heard that Sean Penn was the first choice to play billy the kid imagine how different that would be
@@gregquinn7817 Young guns 2 is based on a man who really claimed to be billy the kid as an old man
@@dannyadams4765 yes...which is fine even though it unlikely that it's true.
But they kill off one of the characters who actually lived till 1929 when he was 80.

Brings back memories. Me and my friends running around the yard yelling “REGULATORS!” Good times.
Cracks me up that Warren G lifted that dialogue for his big hit song.
I still shout it at work sometimes when we get a job that needs doing now. Nobody gets it. 😪
@@andrewcharles459 that’s just sad. Need better workers.
@@gabrielmauller8137 Oh, you know it. One time I was struggling with a large heavy crate while one of the young lads was just standing around doing nothing. "Hey, a little help here?" I said. He walks over and says to me, as I'm clearly in distress with this thing about to fall on me, "What do you need?" I just looked at him for a minute and finally said, "I need a droid that understands the binary language of moisture vaporators." He didn't get it.
Yeah that lasted a good 2 years.good times
If you’re not too familiar with Lou Diamond Phillips, you guys have to watch La Bamba. It was his breakout role and still a classic movie.
Yet all are excllent.
Also, the buddy movie Renegades (1989) with Phillips and Sutherland reunited is a lot of fun too, many at the time felt it was a sort of modern day Young Guns sequel which of course is nonsense but it's well worth seeing. As is the 1990 horror thriller The First Power with Phillips.
The First Power is great too!
Nah the movie where he's an Eskimo. Haven't seen it in long time though
Everything that dude is in,even if it's trash,is made better by Lou. He's just one of those "I'll watch it cus he's in it" actors.
Tom Cruise had a very short cameo in this. he was one of the first people shot when Billy came out of the trunk. Knowing Emillio from the film outsiders he was on set one day and wanted to be shot because he never had the chance to play a part like that so they made him up unrecognizable and let him be in the movie.
Tom Cruise and Emillio Estevez were also in The Outsiders.
Funny because later on Emilio was in the first Mission Impossible with Tom but uncredited for unknown reasons.
Charlie got the Tom Cruise kill
@@alucard624 Probably cause he died so quickly, he didn't want fans thinking he had a bigger role?
Men at Work is a hilarious movie that both Emilio and Charlie are in together! It's not an award winning movie but one that I still enjoy when I catch it.
Classic! Keith David was great in that, too.

I agree. So great. "Never touch another man's fries!"
Gotta $1 dvd.
Men at Work is hilarious. HIGH FIVE! Slam the trash can lids on that guy!🤣🤣
Open Range (2003) with Kevin Costner is a great western.
Open range is probably the best original Western to come out in the last 20 years :) (the remakes of True Grit and 3:10 To Yuma are great too)
One of my favorites
Fantastic movie. I love the way Costner directed the gunfights.
@@mattjones7226 definitely better than in Dances With Wolves when the Indians all got in a circle and shot the guy in the middle. 🙄 🤣
3:10 to Yuma
The Quick and The Dead

The outlaw Josey Wales
At the time this was a breath of fresh air when it came to the Western genre, a clear departure in the typical style, a "rock'n'roll" western. Tupac Shakur must have been a fan as he references Billy's line "I'll make you famous" many times in his own lyrics. Warren G's Regulate straight up uses the regulator monologue in his intro.
At last, this gets a reaction. Both of the Young Guns movies are a fun watch.
My family goes back seven generations in New Mexico....This is a very accurate telling of the story of "Billy the Kid" as well as young guns two. That was Peyote they ate to get their vision. The guy who played Pat Garrett is John Wayne's son Patrick Wayne.
I just watched that scene, and thought, “That looks like Patrick Wayne!” He’s been a regular guest at the annual Lone Pine Film Festival, celebrating films and TV shows shot in the nearby Alabama Hills.
Tom Cruise actually makes a cameo in the big gunfight at the end. He's got a big handlebar mustache and gets shot.
Hey, are you in Albuquerque? Is Powdrell's Barbecue still in business? I fell in love with them 34 years ago, and no barbecue I've had since can compare.
They replaced him in Young Guns 2 with "Gill" from CSI. LOL
@@garyjbaker yeah, and he did a good job but I wish they would have kept Wayne.
My favorite line in the whole movie “did you guys see the size of that chicken?” 😂😂 cracks me up every time!
Emilio is just perfect in this movie.
And Charlie did a pretty decent job here..truly endearing..
I have never clicked on a notification quicker! The video was posted for 47 seconds. I really want to see this reaction, and I can't wait for part 2!
"Buckshot Roberts" was played by Brian Keith. An old western star from the 50's on. One of the great's from the westerns glory day's.
Falls upon me to mention the similarly great Jack Palance then :).
Buckshot Roberts was a badass. Crazy that he actually Fought off the Regulators out numbered 11 to 1. He killed Dick Brewer, Wounded a few others before Charlie shot him in the stomach. Regulators fled and he died the next day.
@@michaelgoodyear9369 In reality he was actually even more "badass" than that - Roberts was shot in the abdomen _first_ and _then_ went on to hold his own against the Regulators.
(he and Charlie Bowdre exchanging fire was actually the opening salvo - he hit Bowdre's belt buckle, Bowdre hit him in the gut)
@anonymes288yea thats true. He died the next day i think.
He also played the dad in the 60's "The Parent Trap".
One of the great endings to a movie. I saw this in the theater & when Chavez showed up with the horses at the end, the entire theater stood up & cheered. Estevez IS Billy the Kid. He played that role to absolute perfection.
This is one of the best westerns. Most of the events are accurate, in both Young Guns 1 and 2. Its really crazy that it all happened in such a short time span. Billy the Kid was about 19 when his career started, and he was fluent in Spanish. He was allegedly killed by Garrett at Billy's girlfriend's estate. However, no one positively identified the man shot in the dark as Billy. They just buried him, thus starting a legend that is still to this day, whether or not he survived.
I don't agree that this is one on the "best" westerns- far from it. This doesn't hold a candle versus classics like The Wild Bunch, High Noon, The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Magnificent Seven, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, Shane, The Searchers, etc. It's nothing more than a movie to entertain the masses.
@@bbwng54 "It's nothing more than a movie to entertain the masses." I just learned there apparently are movies specifically made to not entertain the masses.
@@bbwng54 this was a much better movie than Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
One of the best westerns? I don't know about that. Personally, I like it very much because it's so unabashedly eighties, and of course it's the only brat pack western (if you don't count part two), but it's cheesy and doesn't take itself too seriously. And boy, do they play fast and loose with the history - yes, they get some points vaguely right, but "accurate" these movies definitely aren't. (The actual history which was waaayyy less exciting would make for a somber, slow tv movie.) Still fun, though.
@@DonDiego1973 I wouldn't put YG in the same category as Unforgiven but that's one of the best films ever. But YG are good movies.
I really think it's a crime Emilio Estevez did not get an Oscar for his role in second part of this movie. He was big teen star in the 80s and kind of peaked with this role, especially in second movie. Don't know why he never became a superstar in the 90s and just disappeared from mainstream. He wasn't even 30 when part 2 came out but it was like an end of his career.
Estevez did have those MIGHTY DUCK movies in the '90s, but he transitioned from acting into writing and directing and he's still making movies. His movie BOBBY was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Picture back in the 2000s. It sounds like he really hated being famous for the most part and found it to be a huge distraction to living his life, not to mention seeing how being famous almost killed his brother Charlie.
@@patrickflanagan3762 I know that it was partially his decision, but it was strange. When 90s came he had second part of this movie coming out, his best role. He was just 28, you would expect his star to explode and instead he just disappears. From leading man, A list material to some stupid kid's movies and just a couple of support small roles overnight. It's similar to Chevy Chase in the 90s but he was getting old and already super established not a young man.
Emilio was great in these movies but Oscar performance is a bit of a stretch. Only 5 actors get nominated for each acting category and there's more than 5 great performances every year.
@@joemckim1183 Have you seen what actors/movies through the years haven't won an Oscar? In most cases it's the best performances/movies that don't get it.
I always thought it was interesting that they seemed to have cast Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen in each other's roles -- but it totally worked. Charlie played the straightforward leader, and Emilio got to play the wild child, and they were both fantastic.
This is a badass movie! Glad you two got to experience it.
Yay! I'll echo everyone else & ask that you please react to the amazingly memorable sequel. Thanks! 🙏❤

You and Sam are the definition of fair use. You watch movie and give your insights ongoing. However I really appreciate the conversations you share afterwards. For me that is why your channel is so great. You actually review the movie or show with parts you liked and didn't like. For me as someone who enjoys movies it's always interesting to hear how people interrupted the story the same or different than myself.
Two recommendations for you two
The Edge (1997)
Alaskan wilderness, a bear, Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin. A battle of survival with all these elements.
Black Dynamite (2009)
A parody of the highest caliber, black exploitation movies.
Both this film and Young Guns II are surprisingly the most historically accurate portrayal of Billy the Kid and his crew. Writer John Fusco who wrote both films is a western historian, and even though it's technically not the greatest western film made, it's certainly nice to see the story of Billy the Kid told with as much attention to the facts of history rather than having gone down the usual Hollywood route of changing things.
...this version is a little hollywood, but mostly true. A basic account of the Lincoln County Wars.
The villain Murphy was played by Jack Palance who also played the gunslinger villain (Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor) in Shane (1953) with Oscar nominations (6 in total) for Best Picture and Best Director, plus a win for Best Cinematography. “Shane…Come Back Shane”.
About time you watched this, one of my favourite films ever 👍🏻
You were right about the guy you recognized from 'Lost' being in other westerns. You also saw him in 'Tombstone', he was the town mayor who tried to talk the Earp brothers into enforcing the law.
At the time this came out Emilio estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, charlie sheen (real name carlos estevez) & Louis diamond Phillip's were young up & coming stars. They were famous but were considered the next generation
Just like Tombstone, Young Guns has a lot of well known actors of their generation. One of my favorite Westerns growing up was The Cowboys, starring John Wayne. I was 10 in 72' when it came out so I kinda identified with the young cast and was really immersed in the movie. It's a classic and it had people buying up tickets in advance and VERY LONG lines to get in the theater.
Chisom is a version of this movie too. Starting John Wayne
The Cowboys is a great film.

I would like to see someone's channel react to the John Wayne classic "The Cowboys". A great Western movie! 🤠 🎥🍿
I attended the Lone Pine Film Festival this past October, and they screened The Cowboys Friday evening, with co-star Robert Carradine doing a Q&A afterward. I hadn’t seen it since the early 70s. Had SUCH a crush on A Martinez!
My wife asked this and, admittedly I've been curious myself but was shy about asking, what does your name TBR stand for? Anyhoo, a terrific movie with an equally awesome sequel that's very accurate to what Billy did and who he ran with after the Lincoln County War in this film.

Oh man, this was my favourite movie when I was about 10-14 years old. Watching it as an adult, it's not quite as good as I remember it, but it's still a really fun movie with some great gunfights!
The Lincoln County War was an actual event, set off by the murder of John Tunstall. Many of the characters in the movie did exist but the events are highly fictionalized. William Bonnie and Pat Garrett were friends (Garrett worked for another rancher, John Chisum) and it was Garrett that eventually would end up tracking down Billy the Kid, and kill him. Another older Western, 'Chisum' with John Wayne, is also based on the Lincoln County War, and shows how William Bonnie began working for Tunstall.
Emilio Estevez had a house in the town where I grew up in Montana. A number of months before this came out he held the door open for me as he was walking into the hardware store while I was walking out. He had the sideburns, because he was about to start filming Young Guns.
The gun you're talking about at 37:37 is a Gatling gun...basically a machine gun for the time.
This is such a great movie! On to the sequel sooner rather than later.... cuz it has a lot more of Billy's life which is Legendary.
John Locke from Lost is in soooo many movies!!!! Since watching Lost, I now recognize him so often!!!
These movies are the imagination of a generation of kids. We loved these movies. We loved these guys. We knew these stories. And it was a western movie for the 80's-90's kids. It's hard to explain. I grew up feeling like my grandma's western movies and shows felt old. These were our generation's loved crazy guys. We adored every single guy. You had Charlie, Emilio, Lou Diamond Phillips, Kiefer, and the other Regulators...we've never forgotten them (Dermot Mulroney & Casey sziezkmo). These were a stacked cast. Like the director said "go nuts" and they did.
Haha. Because of this film, when someone mentions Billy The Kid, I always think of Emilio Estevez:)
What a joy to see at the top of the scroll!
I hope that you add Open Range (2003) to the poll, it's criminally overlooked.
as a kid I hated westerns until YG's and YG's2. Can't tell you how much I love these movies.
The Searchers is a must see. It is, in my opinion, John Wayne's best role.
Kneel before Terrance Stamp!
One of my favorite westerns. It's based on the events of the Lincoln County war. Fun fact the guy playing Pat Garrett is the son of John Wayne also Tom Cruise is on of the army men at the end of the movie on the gatlin gun.
Also, Emilio is uncredited in the first and still best Mission Impossible (1996) films with Cruise.
This was a great reaction, guys. Hope you’ll get to Young Guns II.
Jack Palance (Murphy) also played a villain in Shane, a must-see if you're looking for an excellent classic western.
I think you will really like "Young Guns II". I actually prefer it to the first movie...it has a good cast and is very stylish. Some of the main actors return for the sequel but there are plenty of new faces as well.
I love the Sam Raimi western "The Quick and the Dead" which came out a few years after YG2. I'm sure you'll enjoy it...but if you'd like to see more classics from the heyday of movie westerns, you can't go wrong with "Rio Bravo" "The Searchers" and "High Noon". These are the standards by which all other westerns are measured.
Easily one of the best 80s westerns. Definitely the best late 80s western. You need to watch the sequel immediately. It's just as good. Lastly, a bit of trivia for this one. There are two well known people who have cameos. Tom Cruise is the Murphy henchman that Charlie shoots as he barges out of the house at the end. It's hard to tell because Tom sports a beard, but his facial expression is instantly recognizable. On the DVD commentary, Lou Diamond Philips confirms the soldier who fires the gatling gun is Randy Travis; though he isn't facing the camera, he originally had a camera pan to show him, but it was edited out.
Billy was notorious for laughing under fire and trolling the absolute fuck out of his adversaries lol troll level 9000 :D

This is easily one of my favourite movies ever made. The cast, as you said, is STACKED, the script is great, the action is great (and mostly un-choreographed), and yeah it's fairly closely based on real events. There are some liberties taken - like the real Steve and Charlie both survived this shootout, and there were actually more Regulators in the gang - but by all accounts it's one of the most accurate Billy The Kid movies made, at least by that point.
Fun facts: the 4th guy shot when Charlie bursts out of the house firing wildly was Tom Cruise, Pat Garrett was played by John Wayne's son Patrick, and according to Wikipedia there's a 3rd movie in the works

“Did he die or is he just taking a shit?” Lol I’ve probably seen this movie 100 times and never once have I even heard someone pose that question. That cracked me up!
To be clear, yes. Buckshot Roberts and Dick Brewer were both killed in the gun battle at Blazer’s Mill. Also, while it leaves it fairly ambiguous in the film, it is widely accepted that McCloskey did betray the Regulators. He was killed along with Bill Morton and Frank Baker at Aqua Negra. Every gunfight you see in the film is based on an actual gunfight that occurred with the Regulators during the Lincoln County War. All the characters depicted were actual people. The main liberties taken with the film is the Regulators had close to 30 members, not 7, most of them were actually in their late 20’s and early 30’s, and the fate of some of the Regulators is drastically changed.
Can’t wait for you guys to watch Young Guns II. As always, love you guys and love your reactions! You guys are great!

Originally as written, the lady of the night Charlie visits was not his "First" it was written to be his mother, only she didn't know him on the count she gave him up years before.
Have one recommendation in movie for you: Crawl (2019), this movie is excellent.
One of my best friends absolutely loved this movie and the sequel.
He kind of wanted to be Billy, and he definitely went down in a blaze of stupidity.
He was running from the cops and they sent a dog after him. He was
very much in tune with the animal kingdom and just sent the dog back to
the handler, with its tail tucked between its legs. He started running away again
and the cops shot him three times from behind, killing him.
At his funeral, I wrote "Pals" on his coffin.
Brave cops love shooting people in the back
I'll take "things that never happened" for 500.
Very underated are both films. In my opinion two of the best westerns ever. Please watch 2.
I like the second movie even a little better than this one. But this one is great! The moment I saw this posted I watched it!
