They only used the A-Word In Shrek Because Its Another Term For Donkey SO Since this movie has a donkey they were legally allowed to use The A word.
I thought the word Ass could be used in any PG rated movie at first?
@@zaidnail3544 They can
They also made a small penis joke in Shrek
Jackass is another word for Donkey
I still love that joke!
I love the sorts of loopholes some of these movies take to sneak some words in. Imagine the board meeting between the execs and the writers, and the writers are trying to explain "no no no, Shrek is talking about Donkey! Donkey is an ass, which is a real and family friendly word for donkey, as in the animal! He has to save his ass!"
Fun fact: TMNT already has a canon substitute word for hell, it's "shell"! Which's why having hell in that movie got parents upset.
they should get over it
I think a big problem is that parents are so desensitized to PG movies that are essentially glorified G-rated movies that only get a PG-rating because of one or two toilet jokes essentially assuming every modern movie with a PG-rating treats it’s audiences like babies who can’t handle anything. When PG literally means “parental guidance”.
No but see, parents don't want to guide their kids
I'm sorry but they treat their audience like babies is not true

Thank you. This is exactly the problem. Not the cursing, but the understanding of what you're getting into.

For the veggietales example, the island of perpetual tickling wasn't a substitute for hell. In the real story, Haman is hanged at the end. The island was a substitute for death by hanging. I think that justifies it a lot more.
“Hell” and “damned” were used once in the movie Incredibles 2. And we almost heard Lucius Best blurt out the F word, but was cut mid sentence before cutting to another shot.

I was looking for that comment!
I haven't seen the Veggietales Esther movie, but from what I've heard, "the Island of Perpetual Tickling" was a substitute for death, not hell.
Yeah, you can die from tickling lol
Yes, in those days, the general consensus was that you died if you went and stood before the King uninvited. The Island of Perpetual Tickling was indeed that substitute.
yeah you got it right, in the story of Esther in the Bible the people were killed
Yeah That’s what I was saying
Yep. It was actually a stand-in for executions. I don't think there are any instances in the Bible of a Persian king sending somebody to hell, lol

As an American, I also don't get why some people consider hell a swear
Actually, the Island of Perpetual Tickling was a substitute for the death sentence. Since that VeggieTales movie was based off the story of Esther, in the original story, when the assassins were outed and exposed, they were sentenced to death.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 had a line where Pops said “Pickles is p1ssed!” and I was waiting to see that at the end of the video
“HOLY SHI-“
-Balastor, at the end of the Nimona credit scene
Given the context of the word ass, Shrek was talking about Donkey since a male donkey is literally known as a jackass. When Shrek said, "I have to save my ass," in this context he was technically saying, "I have to save my donkey," even though ass is considered a curse word. Still, I think since we saw Shrek and Fiona save Donkey right after Shrek said that line, it's heavily implied that Dreamworks was letting that one slide given the context it was being used in.
"It's not considered a curse word if I'm talking about donkeys." -John Green
I wonder if people realize you can technically say the word shit, uncensored, in a PG rated film, animated or not. It's the strongest swear word you can use before you're veering into PG-13 territory
Beetlejuice has a use of "fuck" and it's rated PG
That was in the 80s before the MPAA really started using the PG-13 more often since it was barely starting in '85 if I remember right

Even cartoon TV shows have curse words.
Literally at the end of The Loud House episode "Potty Mouth" Lily Loud swore, although it's censored.
TMNTMM said “pissed” and yet “hell” was parent’s trigger word?
FR LMAO
I mean pissed is slang a lot of young people used that kind of deviates from being a curse word. It has been used so much that it has joined the likes of "rizz," and "simp." the curse connotation has been lost.
I have to disagree on the point you made with VeggieTales. They weren’t substituting Hell for The Island of Perpetual Tickling.
It was meant to substitute the plot of Haman to exterminate the Jews because Mordecai wouldn’t bow to him. Then when the king realized he’d been tricked he had Haman executed. The story had nothing to do with Hell…
Yeah a terrible example. His whole point doesn't make sense, not only because it is not founded in what the scene is actually saying, but because Veggietales is and always has been satire and not meant to be taken seriously.
I agree heartily
tis a good show
As a catholic Ur right it didn’t have anything to do with hell if they were they would say it Like hell is a bad place like yeah they don’t wimp out on the word hell
I think the reason that movies are getting more open with cursing could also be that their audience is getting older, and the fact that kids are cursing at the age of like 8 now💀
the irony is, I'm pretty sure Shrek is talking about Donkey in that scene... Meaning it's not actually a swear word lol
The dog in Puss in Boots going off on Goldilocks and the bears got me dying the first time I watched it 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
So… nobody remembers that Gwen’s dad says “parenting is a big *** mystery”? He literally said it just as clear as shrek did.
Nah I remember lol
Me too
I distinctly remember saying this part to my dad and him saying "Where'd you hear that from?"
Shrek really just said “ I need to save my ass”💀
The brand new Trolls movie caught me off guard. There was more than a few cuss words. They also had a lot of drug references too, and I was dying laughing! Really surprised me.
As an Australian curse/swear words never really ever get my attention but I definitely have noticed more of them popping up in movies, honestly though it does make the movie more realistic as if any of us were in these situations im sure we would be swearing a lot the only thing is for movies targeted towards children yes I understand that its not appropriate to have them in there but for any thing pg rated who cares anymore like its pg for a reason. I get that everyone has different opinions and its up to each parent/ person to decide what’s appropriate for them and/ or their child
My only issue with it is for the parents that want to guard their children from it, there's no warning. PG used to mean there were certain boundaries that won't be crossed. It's fine to change the rules, but to do so without telling those who depend on those boundaries isn't the answer in my opinion.
Even with the parent being around, there's almost no way for a parent to know a word will be said until it's said. It makes it hard to judge what will be appropriate for their child. If a child sees a character they love say something, it wilm be easy for them to adopt it in their own language.
I personally wouldn't be bothered by it. But i dont have kids. I can understand how a parent wouldn't want their child exposed to certain things so for them, it would be nice if ratings were adjusted for this new trend.
As well as "ass", I think 'Shrek' might well have also contained a fair few "bloodies" as well- ("bloody", for the benefit of our American and Canadian friends, being a mildish-to-moderate cussword over here in the U.K., and also, in Ireland, New Zealand and Australia!)
I REMEMBER NEXT GEN AS ONE OF MY FAVORITE NETFLIX TITLES IT WAS WELL WRITTEN AND DOG SWEARING WAS FUNNY AF

Curse Words In Animated Movies, Disney VS DreamWorks.
All these movies are rated PG, excluding the VeggieTales one that doesn't have a rating.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: Yes, Miles said or almost said "a**" in a kids movie, a word that does not belong.
Elemental: No, Ember didn't curse, she said "ash".
Moana: Yes, Moana might have said the B word, "b**ch" off-screen.
Puss In Boots 3: The Last Wish: Yes, Kitty was about to say "bulls***" guaranteed.
Puss In Boots 3: The Last Wish (again): Yes, Perrito was saying unknown censored curse words.
Next Gen: Yes, Momo was saying censored curse words, and that was happening often throughout the movie.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem: Yes, Superfly said "What the hell", but in that movie, characters are allowed to say that because the movie is PG.
VeggieTales: Esther: The Girl Who Became Queen: Maybe, Haman might have been referring to Hell.
Shrek: Yes, Shrek said the word "ass", but he might have been referring to the Donkey in the movie.
Have you seen Space Jam? That movie also has hell. And in Space Jam a new legacy there are 2 hells

Mikey was gonna say: “WTF IS THAT?!” And Raph was gonna say: “What is wrong with youre SH*T?!” OPENLY!! And this one is hard to hear but i OBVIOUSLY noticed (i watch this movie too much) was that Leo almost said “oh sh*ttt” Yall should watch this movie if u havent already I LOVE IT
One I remember from even before Shrek was a "Damn!" uttered in Secret of NIMH (1982). Though given the G rating, there was a good amount of intense scenes and a touch of blood that could have upped it to PG, which kind of overshadowed the single word.
Next Gen is such a good movie and this is the first time I’ve heard of people talk about it and I’m glad

Did you all know that in the Disney animated classic "Sleeping Beauty", Maleficant actaully said "Hell"? It was when she was about to fight Prince Philip, and before she truned into that huge dragon. And NOBODY even reacted to her saying "Hell".
5:48 in the Catholic faith, using hell or other religious terms (Jesus, Mary, God, etc) in ways like "what the hell" or "oh my God" is considered a sin. So for many religious families, I can understand their concern in not wanting their kids to hear that and possibly repeat it.
Just because its an Animated movie doesn’t make it kid friendly. Sausage Party taught us that already 😂😂😂
5:16 I wonder if those parents ever watched Rango
Sweeney Todd became free with ads on UA-cam, and they changed a no-no word to “sch-pit” because you can’t have such a word in a film about homocide, cannibalism, child abuse, and sexual assault.

The Island of Perpetual Tickling was a replacement for death by hanging, thank you, and tell me a cloaked figure touching you without consent until you die from laughter doesn't sound so much worse (also, peas don't have necks, so hanging would not have worked, which they reference in a later episode.)
Why would they even make curse words bad if it is expressing yourself 💀
fr
The reason Veggietales didn't say hell isn't because of censorship, it's because the series is built on the idea of never directly referencing religion, but doing it in a way that gets the point across

Technically in Esther, the island of perpetual tickling was the alternative to their original punishment from the Bible, which was to be hung. It wasn’t necessarily an alternative to Hell, though Veggietales DID have a slang phrase of being sent “up the river”, which was “to be killed”. I suppose THAT example would’ve been better, but I always thought the slang phrases made the show funnier lol
I find that interesting that they did that, considering there's a VeggieTales episode where Archibald references that specific method of execution...in a joke... Which *really* threw me off guard!!
