I remember hearing this for the first time in solo & ensemble my freshman year of high school. One of our neighboring high school's performed it with just their men, and they all held hands in a circle and sang out looking up towards the ceiling. I literally bawled my eyes out like an idiot. I will never forget that day. Congrats to CMU for a brilliantly heartbreaking performance.
This is a breathtaking performance you guys, I have been in a concert choir for about 11 years and I bet this video doesn't do you guys justice to hearing in an actual in person performance.
Guys, I stumbled on your video of one the most touching songs I know. Your emotion and compassion comes through loud and clear. Thank you and very well done.
The sheet music has alternate words, I have seen it. Sometimes people don't pray to Jesus, so they probably wanted to make it inclusive. I have sung it both ways.
the composer, a Mormon, changed the words from "Jesus help me" to "Who will help me" to make it more universal, as it was about Christians and Muslims in Croatia. The "Christians" were those who ethnically cleansed (murdered) the Muslims. So it's not about taking Jesus out of anything. God is much bigger than that.
Beautifully done, but the 'who will' version (alt. text) will never be even half as powerful as the 'Jesus' version. The original just carries SO much more with it.(IMO)
Goodness, the "Jesus help me" doesn't have to be religious even...even if you don't believe in Jesus or God you still say "oh God" or "oh Jesus" if you are in deep distress or pain.
I'm sad that they couldn't sing the actual written words, that was the song, not trying to make a statement about Christianity. It's supposed to be "crying Jesus help me..."
How do you get best performance of a song when you are afraid to sing it the way it was written?? I stopped listening when I heard them sing "Who will help me" instead of "Jesus help me".
+InkyOcto Yes, thank you! The 'Jesus' on the second chorus actually provides a better storyline (emphasis as you said) because of the search from solitude. I have to admit I was waiting for 'Jesus' on the first, was a happy surprise with the change and then 'Jesus' digs deeper on the second chorus. William, if you're not going to listen to their hard work, then they don't need you as an audience
Also, the worst atrocity of the Balkan conflict this song was dedicated to was the genocide of over 8000 Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica. In which case the lyrics "Jesus help me" would be inaccurate and disrespectful. You shouldn't assume that just because something was originally written one way, that that is the best or most appropriate way to do it.

my school choir is singing this song & we're dedicating it to the children who were lost in the tragedy at newtown.
We sing this in choir. This is absolutely beautiful. Well done guys!
You guys are amazing. I usually prefer a mixed choir on this song but you guys seriously are incredible. GREAT JOB.

amazing song, great performance, but were they not aloud to say jesus? or did they just not want to?
They did, 2:36
@beautifulmusic1313 I think they did say it, no? At 2:36?

William Garnett then you didnt hear them save it for the last verse to give it extra emphasis

Opinion. Everybody has their own.
