- It’s week 3 of the 2024-25 UNC Basketball Summer Roster Preview Series. In the first two installments, we discussed incoming freshmen James Brown and top-10, 5-star recruit Ian Jackson. It’s now time to wrap up the incoming freshman class with our Drake Powell preview. Powell is known for his elite and consistent defense, but his offensive game is coming along as well. While Jackson stayed near the top of the recruiting rankings through his high school journey, Powell skyrocketed from the 70s just two years ago all the way to the top 15. How will he fit in with a loaded back court that includes RJ Davis, Elliot Cadeau, Seth Trimble, Cade Tyson, and Ian Jackson. Will Powell play more at the three or will he shift to the four at times because of all the guards?

This year's squad will fit hopefully like a puzzle. Drake's role will be very vital. It always seems like UNC gets that 6'6" defender that ends up being much more valuable things by the time his career ends. Manuel. Green. Ginyard. Pinson. Black....Powell may be better offensively than the above mentioned. People have been stressing about this team...if we solidify who we have currently,plus get Julius Halifauroa(spell right)...Carolina gets spooky good. HD is stirring the pot.
Drake is better than all of those guys just my humble opinion I think it's upside is way higher than those guys and I think that he's better coming into college then all of those guys
@@JohnCramer-yz2rn That's anyone who comes to UNC; to be better than those who proceeded them. But that wasn't the point of my comment. I certainly hope he exceeds past the above mentioned because I like this young man. His defensive ability is the reason why I mentioned the others. Their ability to lock down defenders at that 6'5-6'7" range is what I hope Drake can be added to that group.

@@JohnCramer-yz2rn we really need some guys to go high, other schools sre are using that against us, it was bad enough competing against Dook, UK/ARK, KU, now you add in UCON, the last thing we need is projected 1st rounder stay another year, that would be a disaster, I am not sure some fans see that, it’s not 1993, and you have to get freshmen to the league, not all 1 and done but one or two every year, UCON had one 1and done lottery, transfer drafted, multi year 1st rnd, that was perfect, Ian said 1 and done from the beginnng so that’s got to happen

This team in general reminds me of 2019. Fast, explosive, athletic. No true center, but explosive wings of differing heights. Plus, drake reminds me of Nas a whole whole lot, with a better attitide and a better skill set. Ian and Drake have Jaylen Brown vibes with their height, length, iq, skills and athleticism. This team is built weird but so was 2019. Im here for it.
@@Majesticon 💯 if the flu did’t hit, they could have hung a banner, every year is different, there were two first round centers in the title game last year,that not the norm, when baylor won, their center didnt average 10 pts, you need guys and we have 5 guys 6’8 and up to play the 4 and 5, cade 6’7 small ball 4, if those guys get better I really think it can work, add a zone as change, play some 5 out, opens the floor, other teams big has to come out or let jwash shoot 3s, or they have to go small, the pieces are there

My question is where is he going to play? I can’t see him playing ahead of Ian Jackson at the 3, nor can I see him ahead of Cade at the 4. When does he get on the floor?
Drake will make HD play him I think he will play alot more than people think the kid is ready for college
This team looks to do what Coach K at Duke used to do - play fast athletic types and not - so - much the cookie cutter 1-2-3-4-5 model. Especially at the 5 Carolina does not do that like say Cooper Flag or the Rutgers guy that went to Alabama does, so the Best Athletes model suits Carolina better. Quick - to - the - Ball, good shooters, Take-Care-of-the Ball, and Run Run Run.
From what Coach Kilby says about Powell, he is this year's Harrison Ingram, with the energy and intangibles - doing the little things - that make one a Special Player.

Cade Tyson has to prove that he can play the four in the ACC. It's fascinating to me how a lot of people are just handing him a starting position. I think he will struggle defensively playing a lot of minutes at the four position. Drake is better right now than Cade will ever be.

Comparison to Harrison Barnes is fair but Drake's handle is better than Harrison already.
