I just wish that I could remember the name of the German commander who was the genius behind these conversions. What he could do was nothing short of brilliant.

Alfred Becker. I believe he's the stout officer in the leather coat inspecting the Marder 1 loaded on the flat car.

I managed to find a model of one of these to add to my collection. I have never seen footage of them before. Incredible footage! Thank you very much. I will try to buy something soon.

I mean, you have to do something with all those captured hulls.

Germans took a lot of captured tanks, removed the turrets, and turned them into mobile artillery. The Geschtzwagen 39H was a French Hotchkiss H39 light tank before the Germans converted 48 of them. The German Marder 1 was a converted Lorraine supply tractor. The Geschtzwagen Mk VI was converted from captured British Mk VI light tanks.

Many of these modifications were born of battle. The troops saw a need and were able to make the conversions and test them in combat.

It was not the German soldiers who lost the war but Hitler.

French Hotchkiss H39, this modified Howitzer was essentially used by the 21st "erstaz" Panzer Division during the battle of Normandie

See were all these Geschützwagens mobile artillery or were some of them also assault guns?

On the French chassis as here they first produced a tank destroyer with a Pak 40, then went on to build the 105mm howitzer versions as well. 21st Panzer in Normandy were a new unit (inheriting the name from the Afrika Korps unit lost in Tunisia) and were initially equipped with captured French tanks. By D-Day there were few if any French tanks in their ranks but there were all sorts of French vehicles, some modified and some not, in service with them. Some of the turrets from the old French tanks were re-used on Tobruk type mountings on the Atlantic wall.
