How to Make The Ultimate Cowboy Caviar | Food Wishes
/ @allrecipes
Hello Food Wishers! My almost perfect Jake Gyllenhaal imitation in the intro might make more sense if you've' seen the movie Brokeback Mountain. :)
I always split bellpeppers in half and then rip out the internals with my hand. It seems quicker to do so and you have more of the bell peppers. Why is that not the preffered way of chefs?
We all knew! Well, most of us knew 😜
I have not seen the movie, but I totally got it
@@debludwig6302 hahaha, you are in for a ride!
Chef John making me hungry at 10:45 PM on a Tuesday. Not fair.
Yup
Same.
Same here
11:45 for me... Even worse! 😂
It is 1:27 for me. If I had the ingredients, I would make it now.
I've been watching your videos for about 6(ish) years. When I first got my cat as a kitten, 5 1/2 years ago, we would watch you together. I recently had to say goodbye forever to him. This was the first video I've watched since then and it's been hard doing it. I just wanted to thank you for giving me so many good memories with him, while watching your videos.
😺
👍
To us our fuzzy pals are a big chapter of our lives. To them: we're their entire lives. I'm glad he had a loving home with you. I'm sorry for your loss.
I just said goodbye to my dog last week. I know how you feel.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Some people don’t always understand how valuable our pets are. That emptiness is very hard to endure when they have to leave us.
So very sorry. I'm sure you gave him a beautiful life.
Grilled corn would be ultimate, ultimate 🤤
Derr corn me good
I was thinking that. Maybe just throw the corn on a griddle or cast iron pan and char it a little if you can't grill it. It'll be leagues better than throwing regular canned corn in
America's Test Kitchen made a recipe for Esquites and they demonstrated a good technique for getting great char on the corn kernels in a skillet. The chef also explained how and why this technique is actually even better than grilling whole corn cobs over a direct flame on a grill. The recipe is on their UA-cam Channel in case anyone is interested.
This Cowboy Caviar recipe looks fantastic! Perhaps I'll have to make a batch for the next family gathering! Thanks Chef John! ❤
Cia has to delete me making fun of someone that drools for corn
I just made it for the first time and I used frozen Birdseye fire roasted corn. Also fire roasted peppers and tomatoes. It was a smash hit. I don't like Jalapenos, so I used pickled Serranoes.
My aunt brings this to every family function and everyone loves it. We don't do it with chips, just have it as a side for burgers and dogs. I've never known the name - dishes at our get togethers are named after the people that bring them. "Steve's beans," "Kat's carrots," "Ana's slaw" etc. Now I know the name!
Your aunt will now be known as "Auntie Cowboy"
It sounds like a good time!
It's good with chips, but I've found it nice ON a hot dog. Almost a Chicago Style dog at that point. The acid of the Caviar goes well with the umami of the Dog. Totally worth the weird looks you're going to get from your family at the next get together!
I had to do a double take cuz I’ve never seen him post a video at 11 at night
Thanks for triggering my nighttime cravings
1PM post for us Aussies.
Cheers for the side plate snack, the BBQ appreciates it
I made it 3 days after you posted the recipe and was a bomb!! my son had a 4th of July party, I made another batch for the party with fresh corn and fresh tomato from the garden, everybody loved it and asked me for the recipe! even Mexicans guests :) chef John was not joking when he said if you start eating it you CAN'T quit!!!!! thank you sir!!!!!!!!
I can't watch a Food Wishes episode and not A) Get hungry and B) just leave happier.
I love the recipes, the presentation, and Chef John’s funny comments. By the way, I recommend the firecracker shrimp Po’ Boy sandwiches.
I need more time in the week to make more of his recipes. Haven't found one that I tied that I haven't liked. Very good. I used fire roasted corn and pickled serrano peppers instead.
I want this as a relish for a hotdog
Great on chicken tacos as well.
Genius!!!!
Great idea !!
It's good! The acid compliments the umami well. It's almost like a Chicago style dog.
That stuff is sooooo good.❤❤❤ my dressing is oil, apple cider vinagar and sugar heated ,then cooled. Fresh celery, onion, sweet peppers, jalapeños,canned sweet corn and any kind of beans you like. Sometimes, i add cilantro. 😊😊
Best dip outside of layered bean dip and guacamole.
I just had this for the first time on Memorial Day! My neighbor brought it to our little potluck, and I was addicted! She added avocado, though, and that took it to a new plane of perfect.
Chef John you rock! What a great way to eat your Fresh Vegetables! Sneak em in and call it dip. I’m sure the kids could fall for this? Well if not just more for us adult children! I love your recipes. Thanks so much! I’m definitely taking this to my next barbecue as the 7 layer dip is getting old! Although I do make a version of 7 layer dip but I add cooked crumbled ground beef that I’ve seasoned with taco seasoning mix. Then with some pita bread I can call that dinner!
This stuff really is addictive. A relative brings this to every family gathering and I recently got her recipe so I could make it for my family. Her’s was almost identical to Chef John’s. I plan to try this recipe next time I make this. My family has enjoyed everything I’ve learned to make from Chef John.
My tweaks to cowboy caviar is shoe peg corn and fresh jalapenos.
We had our family reunion today and one of the ladies brought this dish! First time I had this and I loved it! So did other family members at our table. It was nearly the same as yours but they put garbanzo beans in it instead of the black-eyed peas. I think black-eyed would taste better, so when I make this, your recipe is how I will make it!
Best name for an American dish ever! A name you can taste.
Exactly~
Chef John is so clever and his recipes are always the best❤👍👏😁
I love this. I make it bulk for work lunch and pop it in the microwave for like 30 or 45 sec to take the chill out. So yummy and satisfying. I put some panchetta or a seasoned chicken thigh choped up and grilled for protene. ❤
my sister in law JUST brought a jar of this for us in Canada. you are a saviour chef john.
This is my FAVORITE chip dip/salsa, and I'm going to make this tomorrow. Thanks for the inspiration and for knowing my food wish! ❤
I have been cutting peppers all wrong. Thank you that is so much easier than what I have been doing.
I know a version of this by another name, and had no idea about the regionality of it! This is the power of food, and why we can always keep learning and exploring cuisine nationally and still be surprised!! Thank you Chef John!
My prayers have been answered 🙏🏼
I've always used the make it yourself Italian dressing, but Imma try your dressing instead. This is a family favorite, and I think this will take it to the next level! Thanks chef John!
thanks chef John , your voice makes it always feel better , thank you for your time\efforts much enjoying your recipes
One of my friends made this with fresh diced peaches as well, and it was heavenly.
Like a rhinestone cowboy 🤠
“You know what I do with them? I eat them.”
Perfect
I made this for a party today and it was literally the first thing finished. Everyone loved it. Delicious
Yummy!! This looks absolutely DELICIOUS Chef John!! 😋💜
Oh my god, this dish was amazing! I prepared it for my friend's party grill las weekend. The weather was awful, it rained all day but every time we reached for this dip a big smile appeared on out faces :) I will be making this cowboy caviar every freakin' time for grill from now on ^^ Thank you!❤
Looks excellent. It's been a while since I made a similar version of this. So healthy, so fresh, so satisfying
Thanks John, looks healthy and tasty!
Love making this. Delicious and pretty healthy.
Thank you chef John
So good! Thank you!!
This looks so flavorful! Yum!
You are a wizard Chef John!!!
Looks so delicious thanks for sharing recipe chef
Chef John is my spirit animal 😊
Cute!!!
After making needed to increase sugar 3x to get to the sweetness I like. A lot more flavors than my wife was used to from her basic recipe so of course my family panned it as too spicy and too many ingredients. First bust of yours I’ve made. You can’t win the all. I still like the creativity and now I have chipotle powder in the cupboard I have to find a use for. So there’s that. Thank you for your work.
Thanks for making great food fun Chef John. Love from Ireland
Thank you! This caviar looks delih! Just printed the recipe; I am moving back to California next month, and will definitely have this dish as one of the offerings at my house waeming party!
Thank you!🌶️🫑🌽
Delicious. Thank you. 👍
Excellent side for a Mexican cocktail/Pick your South American/ beer accompaniment while watching Latin movies!
this looks so good!!
Beautiful Chef J !! This looks like it can go with anything .... Fish, Chicken, Etc as a side dish !!
Thank you for saying "addictive", as opposed to the other thing. Making this tomorrow!! ❤❤
other thing?
@@eldhaxan yup!
Hey John, nice late night upload
Made this today as a side for a cook-in, and even though it's still chilling and marinating in the fridge, that bite I took to make sure everything was combined was amazing! Though I lost a game of Kitchen Chicken, and had to upgrade from my standard mixing bowl to a 9x13 casserole dish to fit everything. Thanks Chef!
So good !!
I just had this at my friend's in Texas!!!
I thought it was the other cowboy caviar with the balls lol. Turns out that’s Rocky Mountain oysters. Love the brokeback mountain quote I don’t think a lot of people will get it!
You're the man, Chef!
Awesome recipe!
A BBQ place near my hpuse has this as a side. I have them put that on whatever i order. Its always good!
Just something very enticing about that little piano jingle at the beginning. Kinda feels like.... "Welcome back!"
Great recipes and very entertaining presentation. Thanks, Chef John!
Glad to know I'm not the only one that eats way too much of Cowboy Caviar!
Thanks Chef John, your version looks more delicious than mine! Will make this soon!
Thank you so much for this video my mother used to make cowboy caviar all the time and I didn't remember all the ingredients she used but this is very close
Late night upload yay🎉
We have been making this for a while, I always add avocado….and I’m telling you! 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
This looks amazing I’ll make it as soon as possible
Looks amazing
One of my absolutely favorite things on a chip!
Wow!🤠Looks beautiful
Thank you! 😋
Looks delicious! but now i want to rewatch Brokeback Mountain for the millionth time
Raw corn sliced off the cob is wonderful and way sweeter. And more tender
This is definitely going on my regular healthy menu. I feel, for me, raw tenderstem broccoli or fresh raw young asparagus or raw diced cauliflower, or indeed all three would be a great asset. Great as a dip, great as a side dish and even great as a main meal. Thank you Chef John, I adore your channel. Even though I don’t comment very often, I never miss a post. Best wishes xxx
Cowboy caviar was a big hit at a dinner party I had about a month ago. Next time I’ll try Chef John’s take on it.
I love this name; we always just called it corn salsa but I'm totally calling it this (and making it this way) from now on
I use Shoepeg corn and love avocado with it. Doesn’t get “lost” in my opinion. The multigrain scoops are a must as well.
3:27 I would suggest to try black-eyed peas in some Hoppin' John as your first time trying them. I used to eat just black-eyed peas, ham and cornbread for good luck on Jan. 1st, but for many years it has swapped to Hoppin' John and I eat everything I fix. Since it focuses more on the peas and it isn't as hidden like with Cowboy Caviar. My mom has actually been wanting to find a good recipe for this since my bro always brings some Cowboy Caviar Salsa from Trader Joe's when he visits.
Hello from Sacramento CA. Maybe a joint effort with cowboy Kent Rollins. The videos between him and uncle Roger was very entertaining. Justa thought
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I make this with a handful of canned food when I'm drunk at 2 AM
You are a funny one. 🎉
Just made this, sans the sugar, and I can tell you all that this is amazing. Highly recommended. Wish I could quit you cowboy caviar dip/salsa/salad.
Hi John, I just made this for the first time. It is scrumptious 😋. Too bad I decided to start keto this week (after I finish the Cowboy Caviar). I will share it with my sisters. I used a red bell pepper, a poblano pepper and jalapeño pepper to make the 1.5 cups of pepper. No corn chips though (since I’m going keto this week). I think cucumber will be good in this as well. I agree about not using avocado.
How did you learn how to talk chef John?
😂 you are one of a kind!
Thank you for the recipes!
8:20 AM Chef John video, f yeah!
I use the "curvaceous" ends of the cut peppers as sauce tasting spoons.
Thanks chef John .. I’ve been making this dish for many years . Definitely a crowd pleaser that I didn’t think could be improved…
but I think a couple of your choices better .
I use fresh jalapeño peppers, but I think the tangy taste of pickled ones are a better idea… using grilled peppers sounds nice.
I use red wine vinegar but think the rice wine vinegar would be better.
One suggestion from me .. if not using fresh grilled , canned corn is way better than frozen.
100% agree that fresh diced tomato is much better then chopped canned .
Scoop corn chips are a must.
Jon when you picked up the end of the pepper an ate it made me happy because thats just waste not to use those parts. obviously besides the stem and seeds :)
Ive had to create a new book for all the printed recipes from your channel. ..this looks amazin'
Chef John!
Chef John do you know what time it is
❤❤❤❤ Texas caviar! Gotta make it again!
I make something pretty similar, although I usually put in a finely-minced habanero and some diced jicama. (And use grilled corn, of course!)
That is So Delicious!!❤😊😊😊
“I mean you are after all the Jake Gyllenhaal of this Cowboy Caviar Y’all!!” 🤣💜
The best line I've ever heard from this channel.
@@giannihales89 Nothing will beat "You are the Reese Witherspoon of whether to remove grease with a spoon".
Aces
Can I use Jared garlic
I absolutely adore Chef John 😂😂😂
That's mouth watering 😋
I discovered this on my first trip to Texas & yes, I was asked to bring it to the 2006 Oscar Party. And yes, again, I've overheard someone ask their date to refresh their cocktail for them as they refused to walk away from the Texas Caviar.
PS: Fresh ingredients are Definitively a game changer!!!
Oh my goodness, Let me just say that this is the perfect picnic's dish to go along with your barbecue Lord. Have mercy, one of your finest? I simply adore this recipe. Thank you 4 sharing.
Needed this for my BBQ. 🎉🎉🎉
THE JOKES THIS MAN JUST PULLED OFF
Funny this just came up. I made CC by request for an office potluck yesterday. A staple of mine for years. My version is a bit different but there many different variations and it’s still good
We make something very similar to this called Fort Wayne Caviar.
this with grill burned corn is the best
pro tips on grilling corn? 😊
We have this grilled corn soaked in coconut milk syrup. Just perfect for this!
Oh, and taro chips when corn chips are not available.
We grew up calling this black bean salad. A summer cook out staple. I like the addition of black eyed peas though
I add about a tablespoon of finely minced ginger to mine. Next level!
