    www.filterpro.co.uk for media and foams.
    Similar foams on Amazon.co.uk: geni.us/5cvdB
    Similar foams on Amazon.com: geni.us/ABzyp3
    The foams in the Amazon link do not have such high ridges and valleys as the foams I sell on the FilterPro website but they are OK.
    I should have put more emphasis on the LAYERING of various grades of foams as that is key to successful mechanical filtration. One thin profile cut foam will not catch as much muck as a thick square cut foam of same density but a layered approach using coarse, medium then fine foams will do a much better job of progressively catching dirt than a large single sponge which fills the same space e.g. a tray in a canister filter (hope that makes sense).
    Your foams are the part of your filter which mechanically remove dirt and I'd estimate that 99% of aquarium owners have flat ineffective foams or foams in the wrong place. Hopefully by watching this video you will see the sense in using good quality profile cut foams to catch more dirt and cut down on your filter maintenance schedule.
    If you're unsure how to set up an external canister filter please check this video out: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsAmS...
    The same method applies to most types of filters - mechanical (foams - and fine pad) followed by biological (good quality media).
    Thanks for watching and feel free to share this video with anyone you think may benefit from seeing it.

      For the follow on comments below. Please realize that laymen such as I have greatly benefitted from this mans channel in terms of money spent (less), time spent on maintenance (less), and increased enjoyment of a simple hobby. I've started and stopped the hobby multiple times because of the pain of maintenance until I followed his advice. He is obviously not perfect but his simple and cost effective suggestions have made this hobby much more enjoyable for many of us.

      +Travis Shoemaker Thanks for realising what I am doing here. I'm always learning and if people don't want to use the biohome in their filters they can simply choose something else. It's the ideas and understanding that I'm trying to get out there.
      The very last thing I would ever want to be called (or call myself) is an expert as I am always willing to learn.
      Having the opportunity to share what knowledge I have on the various areas I specialise in and receive feedback (good and bad) on that is an excellent opportunity.
      To me it doesn't matter whether a video gets 100 views or 100,000 views - if one person benefits from it then my work making it has been worth it.
      Knowledge should be shared freely and I definitely don't believe the old saying 'In the land of the blind the one eyes man is king'. I want everybody to take time to consider various points and then get their own creative juices flowing as without imagination and the will to make things better we're simply sheep.
      Learning and freely sharing information should never stop.

      I can't answer that without knowing the volume of the tank, stock, filter and how the filter is set up as there must be a reason for the cloudy water.

      charcoal is very important. I use .25lb per gallon for a month and a half. its alot, but charcoal will grab everything in the water. make sure you have a coarse, medium, and fine mechanical filter before biological, then put the charcoal after that. using a media reactor will give you the best results with it.

    • @Floodedaquatics
      @Floodedaquatics 6 років тому +1

      you cant over do it ever (except chemical) with filtration. you're always better off over sizing everything.

      This test is not scientific and this test practically is useless. You should have used a normal foam pad to the same dimensions as the other foam pad.

    Do you use fine foams instead of perline pads? In your JBL cristalprofi configuration video (I have this filter), I thought the white pad was perline. Which is to be preferred: perline pad or a fine foam? Surely a perline pad would more effectively prevent the clogging of the bio media? Thanks.

    Hi Richard - great to see you doing aquarium related videos again. I've watched most of your videos and learned a lot and enjoyed them all. I'm very grateful that I have my external filters set up correctly thanks to you - and I've had the same basic wisdom confirmed by other experienced fish keepers: i.e. the importance of grading your mechanical filter foams so the bio media gets the cleanest possible water.
    But I'm really not convinced by this video - all you've really shown is that a greater volume of media weighs more . . . the key question is what is more important, the surface area at the boundary between dirty water and foam, or the volume of the foam? You're clearly convinced surface area is all important, even if it means sacrificing a considerable (50%) volume of filter media. I don't necessarily disagree, but I think there's a better proof.
    Here's an idea for an experiment:
    Get two identical small tanks, set up a hamburg matten type filter in each, one with pointy bits into the tank and one with the same PPI of foam without reticulation but with "full" volume. Dump a measured amount of dirt into the water, give it a swish and see which one clears first? You could then continue to dump dirt in at set intervals to see which continued to perform best? What impact does losing so much volume of foam have over time?
    I'm guessing the one with the reticulation will clear more quickly, so I'm not necessarily disagreeing with your conclusion, just questioning your "proof". Also I think there is a downside to reticulation in terms of loss of volume, especially with HMF types where the foam is of course mechanical AND biological. That's why very experienced fish keepers like Ted Judy and Rachel O'Leary are very picky about using Poret foams. Ted has an interesting video on types of foam btw, in terms of cellular construction and the chemicals used to make them. They do not however to my knowledge mention reticulation, but DO discuss volume and gradating PPI of foams.
    Cheers :)

      +Julian Morgan Yes there seems to be some doubt as to my intentions here so I will be doing an experiment to further illustrate the profile cut foams usefulness. I should have explained more that this method relies on a layered approach and one thin profile cut foam is not going to catch as much muck as a spare cut thick foam of same density - my bad but hopefully people who have used the layered approach will chime in and explain the benefits.
      Glad you enjoy the videos and I like it when people don't agree as it makes me more determined to do further research.

    I just wanted to say after watching videos and speaking to Richard direct through email he has given me a much better view on external filter setup. I now have 3 pond foams, all in the bottom tray as it's the first tray water makes contact with, going from course to fine with the lumpy top . I do have room for a floss on top but I wanted to see the outcome of the foams first. it's only been a week since I put them in but so far so good.

  • @skippersmenagerie1572
    @skippersmenagerie1572 7 років тому +6

    What about the filtration in the valleys? I have seen these egg crates and worked with them. You can see right through the valleys. A solid block is going to have more surface area. Less is not more, in this case. If your system needs fine tuning look into ppi density. it is much more precise than this.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  7 років тому +4

      Yes a solid block has more overall surface area but the initial contact area is much less. When they are put together voids are created which collect a huge amount of dirt (if left long enough) and extend the cleaning times of the filter.
      I mention the layering of different density of foams in many of the videos - that is very important to work from coarse to medium to fine, again it will increase cleaning times.

    • @pondguru

    Very good stuff Richard, as usual my dear friend, thanks a lot. We still have many things to learn from you.
    Could I ask if you already know about the porosity of the egg shaping profiled foam though? What PPI does it have?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      In the UK people tend not to get concerned with the PPI of foams (maybe because it is a measurement in cubic inches?) but the coarse one could be 10ppi / 20ppi, medium may be 40ppm / 60ppm - we just buy coarse and medium. As long as the first one water hits is more open structured than the second one it's all good.

    I like all of your videos and have learned SO much! Setting up a brand new Hydor 350 canister tomorrow and will be filling it with it with coarse, medium, fine foams and as much BioHome Ultimate as I can fit in. The only addition I am making, is to place 50 micron pads in a couple of key places; one between the finest foam and the first basket of BioHome, and one as the water is leaving the filter. Can't wait to see crystal clear water in my aquarium! I think I will even have room at the bottom of the filter to place some of those ceramic rings that come with the filter. It makes sense to me that the heavier muck will be trapped there before it hits the first foam. I'm a little concerned that the rings may cause noise, but it is worth a try. Hoping, in time I will be able to achieve anaerobic bacteria to reduce nitrates. I'll be sure to let you know if I have success!

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      All sounds good to me - only thing I would be concerned about is the second fine pad after the media concentrating dirt in the media but you'll be able to assess that when you clean it out after a month or two.

    • @dannettepeters1507
      @dannettepeters1507 6 років тому

      @@pondguru Yes, I wondered about that second 50 micron pad too. My hope is that the water will be so clean before it hits the BioHome baskets, that muck will not be present on the second pad. But, as you say, that is the first thing I will be checking after a month, and the second pad may have to go. Thank you, for all of the information you provide regarding filters and thank you for BioHome Ultimate media!! Cheers!

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому +2

      +Ben Ochart Definitely be careful sourcing foam as foams used for furniture use will often be sprayed with flame retardant chemicals which won't do the tank any favours. Most pond supply shops will have suitable profile cut foams in packs like I sell on website so they are freely available.

      Not really, the dictating factor will be the fine white pad and how quickly it clogs. When it gets clogged the flow slows down and the filter needs cleaning.

    So I recently found out that the range of Fluval canister filters use 30ppi foam all throughout the filters. If that is the case, then wouldn't it defeat the purpose of having 3 layers of foam for the water to go through if the first pre-filter layer is also 30ppi meaning that the other two layers won't catch anything, if at all? I just bought a 107 canister filter and I'm already thinking of adding a 10 ppi foam layer as a pre-filter on the intake, then a 20 ppi sheet where the blue foam is, and then just using the two baskets for biohome ultimate

      +willliam lacey HOB filters generally don't allow for much alteration as they rely on the cartridge system and looking at image search for your filter (not one I'm familiar with as we generally don't use HOB in UK) I can't see how it could be easily altered as the foams seem to be very much toward the front side of the filter.

    The thought of changing filter foams less often makes me want to shout, Hallelujah! Just wondering though, some of my foams are in a box that is set up before the external filter which houses the media is in my koi/gold pond that is only 1200 gal. My question is how may that affect my water quality with the foam filter staying in possibly twice as long. Might I not have issues with alkaline in my small set up? Thank you in advance, I do enjoy your informative videos and of course your accent as well. American Senora.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      The length of time foams stays in will not affect the water quality (apart from the improved clarity when foams are set up in correct order) and they would really only be cleaned / replaced as and when that was necessary.

      Having voids between the foams allows for increased dirt collection / less clogging but there's not a whole heap of difference. As you say, as long as the parts are set up in the correct order it will work well regardless of if the foams are profile cut or flat.

    Hi, sir I have an Ehiem 2213 canister filter which has a small media basket in it which holds the media in it, now I have been looking at all your videos and knowing that more the media better the water quality in the fish tank, so with that been said is it advisable to remove the media basket and put the media directly in the green coloured container which holds the basket, sir I would appreciate your answer on this.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  7 років тому +1

      In those sort of filters you could do it either way. As long as the foams are the bottom followed by the fine pad and media above that it will work fine. As the Eheim website states the 2213 (250) is suitable for normal aquariums of around 80 litres it will likely hold at least 1kg of media as their sizing is normally very accurate.

      Hi,
      Sir I have another question and it's really confusing for me after reading all different types of reviews is it advisable to switch off the canister filter while feeding the fish.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  7 років тому

      I suppose it depends on how the water is returning to the tank and what type of food is being fed / where in the tank it drifts to and if it gets sucked into the intake pipe but generally you would not turn a filter off while feeding the fish. In a pond a skimmer would be turned off while feeding as it draws anything floating into a basket for removal but in an aquarium just leave everything running.

    Can you keep reusing these foams or would you have to replace it? If you have to replace it, how often?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      The coarse and medium foams are just washed out in water you've drained from the tank during maintenance but the fine white pad needs replacing when it gets clogged since it is too fine to clean out.

    Hey fella! Those foams have made a HUGE difference to my tank using them in the booster ( pre-filter ) and my main canister is now almost all BIOHOME ULTIMATE. The difference in the quality of the water with that stuff is night and day and it's only been, what, a month?I'll have to add a video of my tank at some stage and post it up.Folks, if you're reading this, get the BIOHOME media! One question, if my tank is all sand, would ph levels be buttered by a thin sprinkle of gravel to make it more natural looking?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      +Mark Pilgrim Glad you are pleased and have noticed a difference in quality. Groovy.
      With regard to gravel if you use a minimal amount it shouldn't make a difference but will get integrated into the sand and probably sink out of sight.

    Watching your videos and following your advice I now have two tanks with no nitrates. Yes I bought other kits thinking something was wrong and tested until I almost broke my hand banging bottle #2 but I'll stick with Ultimate Bio-Home Media and your forms and set it up your way. remember we don't keep fish the water keeps the fish and we keep the water. With the Nitrates as they are WC's are breeze.

    But in a SunSun Filter the water comes up not down like a Fluval filter

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому +1

      Sun Sun is like most canisters which work bottom to top - FX series of Fluvals work top to bottom and the only reason that I demonstrated how much 'dirt' the profile cut foams would hold by having them facing up in this video was that the gravel stayed in that way. It was impossible to have them upside down for the demonstration.

  • @darrenkawasaki6345

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      +darren kawasaki If it is the old Fluval 4, not the U4 then most shops should still carry all the foams needed for it as they were a very popular long serving filter. When I had the shop we had a full range of the older foams for fluval internals.
      Just checked the stock I have left over from when I closed my shop but unfortunately there is no fluval 4 foams for older filters - you'll pick them up online no worries.

      the ones in your pond would taste good as I have seen your water pump. so they will be good eating. I live 270 miles from you. but I hope to be up your way this year and I will give you a shout. to see if your free. and if you want a top trap I make you one. it will clear your pond in month of crayfish. its the best trap I have ever made. and I have made a lot of traps and this one is the best I have done 36 crayfish in 24 hours. all my last traps was up to 15 max in 24 hours. and my next catch will be more than 36 in 24 hours as they wont get to the bate. as when the bate is gone they wont go in the trap.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      +darren kawasaki Thats a good haul. No need to bring traps as I have plenty of them. If I left one in for 24 hours it would be so heavy it would take major effort to lift out, lol

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому +1

      +PJ Fuentes I never got into planting substrates but I'd say avoid any with flourite as they seem to keep the pH around 7.5. Not sure about the plants but maybe the 'Green Machine' would be a good company - seen some of their videos and they really know their stuff. Failing that search for stockists of Tropica plants as they are very good quality potted plants.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому +1

      +Brent Watkins You could try suppliers of pond equipment as they should definitely have them. The idea of using profile cut foams in filters has been a no-brainer for pond keepers for decades but the aquarium market is still lagging way behind so they just aren't seen in any of the main manufacturers filters. If I was feeling cynical I'd say they don't want people to use much cheaper (better) pond foams and would rather continue to supply over priced flat foams which only do half a job....
      Glad you enjoyed the video - thanks for watching.

      +Brent Watkins Definitely not cheap when you factor in the shipping from UK which is why its good to have the different suppliers around the world now. Hopefully Charles from Genesis can source some good quality foams in AU and offer them with the biohome as the mechanical filtration is just as important as the biological.

    I don't think this is the case . That's like comparing the contact patch of wet weather race car tyres and fully slick race tyres . I believe you are wrong .sorry. the more surface area and contact patch the great the grip or in this case filtration .. sounds great in theory .. but your demonstration only proves you can and will need add more media to make up for the portions that are not bumpy ... sorry but I just don't see how this works ..

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  7 років тому +4

      When you layer foams on top of each other you get voids between the foams and that traps a nation of muck - its something which really has to be tried to compare the difference between flat foams and profile cut foams. It is no coincidence that the majority of pond filters use profile cut foams specifically to trap more dirt and extend maintenance times in situations which have much more muck than an aquarium.

    Yeah, but you will have lower nitrate cleaning once a month.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      +Jeff K I would still recommend doing a partial water change for the tank every week of 10%-15% to freshen up the tank, even when it attains zero nitrates as essential elements will get lost or tied up during the many things happening in the aquarium and filter.
      The filter should only need looking at as and when it gets clogged but uneaten food and fish waste will still need removing from the substrate.
      You're definitely right that regular maintenance of some form is still required to keep the tank looking good and functioning properly.

    Pointless, you had a gap underneath for the first weigh in caused by the ridges - so by your logic having a flat sponge half the thickness is better because you would be able to put more balls on top?
