He's also using his heavily modified Guild Starfire in '72, which lends itself to a slightly different approach and sound to a Jazz bass. I would've used that Starfire behind me instead, even if it didn't have Alembic mods; but I get it's not a not-for-note or tone-for-tone transcript. He loves to throw in little baroque-type melodies here and there. Once you learn his fingerings and patterns, it's a lot of mix-and-match, I find, but he does seem to transcend those as well. Also, he was dosed a good part of the time back then and was probably hearing things on a micro-cellular level. (Don't try this at home, kids).

Thanks for reaching out! Ya I tried the Starfire but had a hard time getting a good tone to make the videos.. So I just stick with my trusty Jazz Bass.. My approach to these lessons is to keep things simple while touching on anything that I might think is relevant when it comes to sounding like Phil or John.. I've had such a hard road to learning how to play.. and so many lesson videos tend to get too technical and lose me immediately.. But it's early days.. I started this channel less than a year ago.. Happy to have you onboard.. Hope to have some new content up soon.. Cheers mate! ✌️

Awesome!! I'd love to get into Mystery Train and Catfish John from Jerry Garcia Band. And from the Grateful Dead it would be cool to learn about China Cat, Mississippi Half-Stef and Music Never Stopped. Also, I am still more of a beginner and it really helps when you say the numbers on the fret board as you do in most of your videos, just as a side note. Again thank you so much!! @@Bass_Geek

I was not into the Dead as a younger guy. In my 30's I played keyboard in a Greateful Dead cover band. Years later I switched to bass. Phil is a hard act to follow. Great job BG.

Thanks man.. I got into the Dead early on but it seems the older I get, the more meaning and impact these songs have on me.. Maybe I'm just being sentimental, but digging into these tunes really has been eye opening.. Phil to me is at peak complexity in these tunes.. all the while keeping it funky and bluesy.. The beat goes on my friend.. hope to have some more deep dives into the Phil Zone here real soon! ✌️

@@Bass_Geek I did not get into the Dead really until 2 years ago despite my playing that summer.

These videos rock! How do you get that tone on your j-bass?

Thanks man! I love that Bass! It's an American Professional I bought a couple years ago.. I plug into a Cali 76 Compressor then to a Rupert Neve DI, then to Garage Band.. I also use D'Addario Chromes Flatwound strings.. I'm sure they contribute quite a bit to my tone.. Appreciate your comment bro.. Anything I can do to help let me know ✌️

Nice! I have a 01 MIM j-bass, and also using d'addrio flats but unsure if they're chrome - maybe that's the difference!
I'll check out those effects and settings you're talking about too!
Your videos have helped me get away from tablature a lot too - thank you!
