  • Here is the best video on how to make 511 soil mix right! Your citrus in containers will thank you!
    Here is the recipe:
5 parts pine or fir bark (3/8” to 1/2” in size)
1 part coarse perlite #3 in size
    1 part soil mix
(1 table spoon of dolomite lime per gallon of mix) adds a ph buffer since the bark is so acidic and add cal and mg)
This mix is so easy to adjust for your climate. If it gets wet a lot, use true 511; if you are in a hotter climate like myself, add an extra part of soil.

Great video! I agree with you in Texas we have to add more of the binder like you said! Just too hot here! Very glad you mentioned it so people can tailor their mix accordingly! Only thing I do differently is I don’t add fertilizer to the 1st bottom layer but I do on all the other layers!

Thanks Matt. That is very helpful. I'm in Georgia, with lots of rain. I've learned to use the soil conditioner, which is a really fine bark to help with drainage.
Now I'm trying to find an inexpensive source of large 15-20 gal pots for my citrus. They are now in 5 gal home depot buckets, but need something bigger soon. Any ideas?
