As someone who's pro-choice, I agree with Paul completely. The Constitution gives the federal government NO authority to oversee abortion, and we can't just ignore the Constitution every time it's inconvenient (we do it way too much already). To me, it's a personal matter (and the 10th Amendment agrees). If a state shows that it has a compelling issue on regulating/banning it, that's fine, but otherwise it's a personal matter.
I'm a moderate Libertarian and my honest but admittedly ignorant view is that in the first trimester the fetus is essentially a growth rather than a legal person, after that it has the right to life and the federal government should keep the baby alive by force if necessary. I believe that taxing someone who doesn't want their tax money funding abortion have the right not to, in my view the government should be funded by light inflation to cover courts, police, and the military and private property, everything else should be turned over to the states and locales.

I wonder if we'll ever, EVER, see another speaker like Ron Paul. But then I recall the pith, authority, and silencing truth with which Jesus spoke, and he's coming back!
I like Ron Paul but I oppose any and all laws based on religious beliefs or objections, that includes abortion and gay marriage laws, federally and locally. The founding fathers did not envision a country where the Christian doctrine was imposed by law, as a matter of fact Thomas Jefferson makes a specific remark to the separation of church and state saying, "I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State." He was not isolated in this belief, most of the founding fathers loathed the idea of religious law being forcefully or by process of inaccessibility, imposed on the American people. They held this belief despite their mostly Protestant Christian religion. Only 22-24% of Americans label themselves Christians, and not all Christians believe that life begins at conception. About the same amount of people label themselves agnostics, so can we as Christians in a government based on freedom, a country started by men who left England to escape religious persecution, rightfully force the majority (78%) of Americans to live by laws based on a religion that they do not follow? Can we call that freedom? The 78% statistic may actually be higher considering that a good portion of Christians are pro choice liberals, many of them believeing that life does not begin at conception because of this quote from the bible; Exodus 21:22-25 "When men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that there is miscarriage, and yet no harm follows, the one who hurt her shall be fined according as the woman's husband shall lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe." I could go all day listing pro choice bible quotes but that isnt the point. The point is that we are forcing 78% or more of America to live under religious law, a travesty to the vision of our founding fathers and a smack in the face to their values. Why has the separation of Church and State been ignored when we debate gay marriage and abortion? Why are we submitting to the allowance of religious law being incorporated into our purported to be separate state? How can we as Americans just destroy the will of the founding fathers and oppress 78% of the population because 22% or less have religious oppositions which were never supposed to be a part of any debate in America? That is what oppression is. Forcing the majority of America to live by the will of the minority. It is immoral and should be illegal.
+George Mason Pro-life Christians like Paul would deny that their stance on abortion was due to their faith. They say it's akin to shooting one of us in the head, and they think that should be illegal too. If you think they're being disingenuous, fine, but that is what they would say.
***** I didn't say you have to be Christian. But statistically, most pro lifers are right wing Christians. There's a reason that solid majority of MD's and scientists support abortion rights prior to 24 weeks. The fetus has no brainwaves. It doesn't even know it's alive. Why should abortion be banned when the brain of the fetus doesn't work, and is there for not alive in any existential sense, but you can slaughter as many pigs as you want? It just doesn't make sense. Especially when considering the fact that when the earth's population hits 12 billion, in less than 15 years probably, there won't be enough resources left to keep everyone alive anyway. Abortion rights make sense. Its not murder, as ice already explained, because the fetus isn't alive until 20-24 weeks. Christians only believe that they are alive because they think that the fetus has a spirit. The science is against them in every way.
MarioDeSanta97 That's a separate public policy issue. One can be against prohibiting abortion and against using taxpayer money for it. Having abortion legal doesn't require taxpayer funding of it, just like having any other thing legal (i.e. rice, cars, furniture, toothpaste, etc). The OP was saying one can only believe abortion should be prohibited on religious grounds, and I was pointing out that most religious opponents of abortion would object to that.

Ron paul is the man! And i mean that in the best way possible lol. I loved hearing his stance on abortion today and I totally agree. It isn't a question of changing law. The problem is the change in morals!
@JoeyBatz. That's the problem. The state has no legitimate compelling reason for banning abortion. If any did, it would've come to light by this point. Thus, with no compelling reason, any attempt to ban abortion by specific state would be thwarted by the Supreme Court. Constitution does not give specific rights as far as abortion, but those rights are inherent in the Due Process and Equal Protection clauses.
that's technically the case with slavery, but as much as we love the constitution we will protect the unborn over it as what we are doing is in line with the principles of the constitution and necessary for the protection of the unborn.
