David Stewart from the euryhtmics and Candy Dulfer our finest sax player from the Netherlands she is a great performer over here and Lily was here comes from a movie it's a movie song great performance and great raection guys thank you. Greetibgs from the netherlands
Not big on instrumentals, but Dave has worked his magic and made this an incredible listen. Candy Dulfer does more than just hold up her end of things and delivers an amazing performance. Wonderful chill vibe. Thanks for the memories once again, Boys.
Candy Dulfer is amazing. Saw her live twice. Have to admit, I had a big crush on her, and when they had a Meet and Greet, she was really nice. Her dueling saxes album with her dad is really fun. My favorite solo album of hers is What Does it Take from 1999.
Thanks, Ryan, for whatever part you had in this pivot. Yes, “Lily Was Here” was Dave Stewart’s tune but when it dropped in ‘89, it was viewed as Candy’s song. Anyway, I appreciate the reaction. 😎 (The video is interspersed with clips from the film of the same name about an interracial teen couple in the Netherlands)
I have Candy Dulfer's Saxuality album released in 1990. Played it to death. I didn't know Lily was Here was written by Stewart or that it was part of a movie soundtrack. Glad you checked out an instrumental, something a little different for you guys.
Yes, Candy Dulfer ❤! She's got great albums particularly Sax A gogo like Mister Marvin, 2funky, Smooth, Jamming, I can't make you love me and many more. Also, She sings. Candy's music is rockin, grooving when played nice and loud. Dave Stewart is from the successful Eurythmics. Thanks for reacting to Candy Dulfer.
I have never seen anybody review Candy... Her and Dave give a masterful duet (sans lyrics). Thank you for taking the "path less travelled"... Dave's finger picking reminds me so much of Mark Knopfler's technique, minus the blues sound...
Dave Stewart was doing such great producing in the Eurythmics years. One song with the most wonderful production touches tucked in and setting a nighttime mood, is "This City Never Sleeps" by the Eurythmics. Not as much vocal showing off by Annie Lennox in this one as in some other songs I love from them, but I'm suggesting it for the mood and production. The city sounds Dave Stewart saved and programmed/manipulated into the latest synth he had bought. For the longest time, whenever I listened again, I kept pickng up some new thing he had woven in.
Listened to this again, but this time was taken aback my what Nick was saying at the end. That this song is JUST MEMORABLE ENOUGH ... WHAT ? This is a GREAT piece of music, only made BETTER by Candy's flawless saxophone playing ! I've heard this song for 30 plus years and it is one of my favorites THAT STICKS WITH ME ! VERY MEMORABLE !!!
I think she was on Late Night with David Letterman back in 89 or 90 when I first heard this and had to go get it the next day. It's just so good it still sounds fresh today.
Smooth jazz usually tries to be more like ambient music: smooth sounding, very lush and layered but not loud nor "weird" enough to grab the attention too much (and scare away potential consumers). Very different from regular jazz, where either the main theme takes over and is VERY memorable (Caravan, Lonely Woman, Blue Bossa, Mack the Knife) or the musicians do very flashy solos (Breezin', Milestones, Are You Going With Me?). So, actually what Nick said does check with the genre, it's a SOLID smooth jazz piece. "Just memorable enough" to be enjoyed by anyone. If it was a more "memorable", its target market would be irremediably reduced.
Candy D. is a talented beautiful woman. I've been a fan for a long time. If you like her music I can recommend another talented beautiful female saxophone player named Mindi Abair. If you like Candy's music you'll like Mindi's.
You didn't know the song? I've always wished the conversation between the acoustic and the sax would be longer. Great song that's timeless, just wish there was more in it as these are all amazing musicians.
If you want to know what she's really capable of, you need to watch her performance of 'Pick Up The Pieces', live in Leverkusen 2009. An 18 minute (!) jaw-dropping performance by her and her incredible band.
My mom bought the Saxuality album because she liked this song so much. I remember listening to the whole thing even though jazz was not my thing. Candy can PLAY.
Just saw Candy D., few weeks ago here in NYC with other friends on a cruise on the Hudson River. Have seen her numerous times and she is from my hometown. Did you know she also played for the late Prince!? No worries you will like the instrumental side of it!!
If you start to like instrumental, please try Tower of Power a band of 9-10, which is 55 yers old. Lots of horns and the best there is the track is called “Boys of the Bay”, they do Funk/R&B, this my favorite track, they also have a lead singer. You will be the first one to do it and others will follow suit, you will know what I mean!
Okay. You're officially here now. Try David Sanborn. He has a very good and deep catalog. Bob James and David Sanborn did an album called Maputo. Also you need to try JoAnn's Song by David Sanborn from the movie Tequila Sunrise with Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell and Mel Gibson. Also Warren Hill is very good. Try Our First Dance by him.
@@gabrielmcdonnell8699 I'm a huge fan of all of those artists and have been for years. I am especially a huge fan of Pat Metheny who I am going to see in concert in October. Hiroshima and Toto just in a concert together a month or so ago. I didn't see that one but man what a lineup.
@@Citizenesse8 That’s great about the upcoming Metheny concert. His music would be challenging for this channel (no disrespect to our KY trio) but I could see them reacting to Pat’s collab with Bowie on “This Is Not America”. Also, Ryan and Ty’s heads with be bobbing in rhythmic unison to Hiroshima’s classic”One Wish”.
Wife Speaking.."the janitor hollering from the back"...I Looove that Nick😂...Song takes me back to very early college years at NC State..This song oozes sensuality...Amazing!! Always appreciate your extensive knowledge of music, instruments and voice..And yes that Bass is 🔥 Fire..And so Are you Fine Gentlemen..Awesome Reaction as always..
This song title...I think this song is on a compilation CD I bought in a little gift shop in Greene, NY back in the '90s. I'm very curious to hear this song. YES!!! I know this song! The CD was called Pure Moods. Some other cuts were Orinoco Flow, Tubular Bells, and the theme from Twin Peaks. Great CD!
My late BFF, sent me her video of this, since I had just adopted a tiny black gorgeous kitty. I named her Lilly, ( lil bit). That was the cutest kitty I'd ever had . She was so fluffy, playful and loving. Unfortunately, she never got to grow up. She suddenly passed away one night. I was heartbroken! We never figured out what killed her. One minute she's zooming, then she went down so fast..no time. To find a vet on a Sunday. Lilly is missed.
you guys should must listen and watch there live version you can hear the funk and base drums more in live version and candy and Dave keep going and ripping it playing so much harder you guys would love the live version as well as this version I love it.
There are some great live performances with her *excellent* band. Such good musicians with her. I think its the San Diego show that is so great (she has a fancy white dress on. Elegant.)
This was good on so many levels! First, maybe cuz I am still sad this week, my buddy, Patrick, that just past was a sax player. His band will be in Louisville Sunday again. So it hits home. 😊❤😢 Second, didn't know what to think when I first saw you were going to do this song. I knew Dave Stewart was in the Eurythmics and married to Annie Lennox. But did not know about all his other ventures. But man where was this song all my life. This was so good! His guitar, her playing sax, the drums - everything! Don't know if I want to see the movie, but saw Tim Curry in one of the clips. If she played the whole song by herself or he played the guitar the whole time - they would both sound great. Love the tone of the guitar. Again, so unexpected and I will listen to this over and over!!! Side note: always love your analogies: "saxuality"/janitor/ Butch. I sang "Anything You Can Do" for my Final in high School choir. (Think I got an A) Three pointers (Steph and Klay). Smooth Jazz was pretty popular around that time, I remember Chicago had a Smooth Jazz channel. Great song! Great reaction!
Actually Dave and Annie were in a relationship for three years before they formed Eurythmics but they were never married. Dave was married to one of the women from Bananarama , Siobhan Fahey from 1987 - 1996.
First of all, thanks for doing this. I'm going to my basement to dig the `Saxuality' cd out of my boxes of compact discs. Yeah, I'll be back next month. Anyway, the drums are programmed. The bass is a synth, also programmed. My understanding is this was a one-take jam at the end of a recording session and Dave decided to release it.
They showed "Lily" several times ... once with a Black man, her being dressed down to match his style, then as the 2 versions you saw. I think the idea is when she was in the persona at the bar (showing the tattoo), that was her when she was "off" and just trying to wind down, listening to "the band". Also, remember, this was from Candy's album, so she SHOULD have the "lion's share" of the solo work ... because it's "her" song, so to speak.
Outstanding! This was a big hit! If you are doing instrumentals one that will knock your socks off...Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble....Riviera Paradise...
Yeah, the Eurythmics don't need favor (or pity ) introductions from anybody, they were a huge band in the 80's (and a quick successful return in the 2000's). Dave Stewart is super talented musician, writer, and producer.
I've seen quite a few live versions of this, both with and without Dave. There is at least one where Dave adds his own solo bit such as this one ua-cam.com/video/_5kKo2_2MzI/v-deo.html
I still find it just unforgivable the these guys, in all this time have not (and I did search their videos) reacted to the best (subjective ... but many, many, agree) singer to step up to a microphone ... LINDA RONSTADT !
This is CANDY'S SONG ... even if Dave wrote it, it's all about the Candy and her Sax ! So saying "featuring" Candy Dulfer is just wrong, wrong, wrong !
@EJSmith-dk3yg: It is from a Dutch film called De Kassiere [ English title is Lily was Here ] and Dave Stewart decided to release the tune as a single in 1989.

For me, Candy's first three albums were very good, then things went downhill. She's still great live, though.
I always felt like he used the wrong guitar sound for this, it sounds borderline detuned, but it does make the sax sound so much sweeter.
