great question! it depends on your definition of rare I suppose. on one hand, meg teeth are not rare. consider that megalodon as a species lived at least 10 million years and they existed globally. one individual would lose hundreds, if not thousands in a lifetime. imagine how many teeth every shark lost cumulatively during that time! on the other hand, nice megalodon teeth are rare. of all the teeth i mentioned before, many did not fossilize at all or were completely annihilated by natural erosion at some point since they were lost. Only a scarce few of all megalodon teeth ever shed survived to be recognizable as shark teeth today. these sharks ate whales and had tremendous bite force so many of the teeth broke during feeding. lots of incomplete teeth fossilized. fewer teeth were complete when they fell from the sharks' mouths. Some of those broke over time due to natural processes like drying out and becoming wet again. the salt in the water is the worst because when a tooth dries, salt crystals form and bust the tooth apart from the inside. so basically everything is against a tooth surviving tens of millions of years in complete condition. those are the ones people want and they ARE rare.

As much as I would love to see one alive, I think megalodon is extinct unfortunately. I believe they died out somewhere during the last ice age. I have several reasons why. we don't see evidence of them being alive. No dead ones wash up on beaches, no giant bite marks in whale carcasses, only fossil teeth. Some people say they could be alive in the deep ocean and while that is not impossible, i think it is unlikely because that would require a complete change in the habits of the animal. It was a warm coastal water predator that fed on whales and other large marine animals - it does not just change its ways so drastically.
blackriverfossils we've only explored a small percentage of the ocean so I think it may be possible. Do you think that the lock ness monster is an actual creature
blackriverfossils very interesting analysis could there be a not so distant relative to the megaladon that could still exist that isn't more of the modern day white shark species? Also do you know any place in Virginia where we could find megaladon teeth? Also how much do these teeth sell for anyways? Sorry I always love archeology even as a kid...
+liana bentley . There are quite a few coastal sites in the UK where fossil shark teeth can be found but only 1 site in Essex that produces megalodon on very rare occasions and they are usually in poor shape. It was a warm coastal water predator that fed on whales and other large marine animals - it does not just change its ways so drastically.
blackriverfossils we've only explored a small percentage of the ocean so I think it may be possible. Do you think that the lock ness monster is an actual creature

What state are you in?
blackriverfossils very interesting analysis could there be a not so distant relative to the megaladon that could still exist that isn't more of the modern day white shark species? Also do you know any place in Virginia where we could find megaladon teeth? Also how much do these teeth sell for anyways?
Sorry I always love archeology even as a kid...
I wish we had sites like this in the UK ! Cheers, Jim
is there anywhere in the UK that you can find teeth? I'd love to find one
+liana bentley . There are quite a few coastal sites in the UK where fossil shark teeth can be found but only 1 site in Essex that produces megalodon on very rare occasions and they are usually in poor shape. I have never found a Meg tooth but have purchased a few. I have found many small teeth on various beaches.
+Jimson's Stuff what about California?
+Linda Cirby Sorry I don't know.
Thanks anyway though
Spectacular. You should have called me!!! I'd have gone. Keep em coming.

This is such an amazing video! I've spent hundreds of hours fossil hunting on the beach and haven't even found 1 meg tooth. I am so jealous!
if you find pieces of megalodon teeth on any beaches you hunt, you might try snorkeling or diving there for a chance at a whole one.
@@blackriverfossils that's a good idea. I have a bay in mind where that could work. Thanks for the idea! 😁
