Nothing wrong with no amp bro. I ripped all the electronics out of my strat. (I’ve never heard this one plugged in. Haha) You see, I got too lost in “chasing tone.” And now I just want to be a better player. However a By mistake I’ve learned a few new things about sustainability so that I could better hear the instrument. And yes I do play better now. (Still not good in my opinion.) (Keep in mind: this below is only the theory of a man:) The paint is an insulator for the vibrations, and therefore less vibration is transferred to the pick guard. And that extra movement of the pick guard really can aid in “tone” and sustain. Which in one way this really helps explain why nitro finishes and relic guitars with pick wear above the guard sound the way they can. The wood can Literally “breathe” aka move air against the pick guard. And those vibrations are transferred to vibrating the pickups themselves. Which (in my mind) would make the signal act like it’s actually seeing move movement from the strings. I think that If you outlined the pick guard with a razor blade then removed the paint where the guard lays against the body. Possibly even with a router. than it would be perfectly flat for contact and the pick guard could actually sit flush with the body. Making the strumming hand feel free. Relic sounds, without the relic look. 🤔🤫😉 ((But on the same note. Maybe the pickguard needs just a little less of a flat seal against the body to properly resonate the vibrations. A little experiment should be in order soon.)) Also on that train of thought the finish under a bridge laying flat against the body just might be stealing something too. (Just a mans thoughts. That’s all.)
