Heavy road base geotextile is 100% worth it, especially at your own place vs. a customer. You haul in/out pretty heavy setups all the time, so no doubt all that stone will be mashed into the sub-base material. For 500 bucks, the proper geotextile will save you thousands in terms of re-graveling/touch up. Nice video sir, super jealous of your new trailer!

Interesting cost analysis. If your dump trailer builds up a new revenue stream for you, you may need the dump truck. I would wait until you can't live without it rather than buy something that might not pay for itself.

Once you reach the point where V Belt & Sons needs multiple pieces of equipment on a job site, it might make sense to purchase a truck tractor and and large lowboy trailer to haul all of your equipment.
With semi truck as part of your operation, later adding a used dump trailer might make sense if you can show a return on investment in a year or less. To go out and drop $80K on a new dump trailer without being full time in the business, is asking to go out of business.

Always wanted a semi and belly dump for doing long driveways in central Oklahoma. Bought a used setup a few years back and it has been a huge unending expense. The truck and belly isn't my primary busy model and now after a new motor and set of tires thinking about going back to gooseneck dump trailer and gooseneck flatbed for moving the dozer and tractors. If I had employees to keep all the equipment busy might be a different story.

One has to figure out what works for them. Your Dump trailer does things that a dump truck cant do and vis versa Dumping on the move to spread gravel is awesome even better is when they have a pup trailer and dump both truck and trailer at once As for you getting a Semi whatever it is one needs to figure out what fits there needs for your operation Id run a hook loader that way you could have multiple decks and or bins but thats me

It’s crazy how different pricing is on stuff in different areas of the country. Here in CT a triaxle dump hauls 22-24tons of material and hourly rate is $85 an hour. For a load of 3/4 process delivered is pretty much right at $400.
That being said you could get $100 per delivery in CT for the dump trailer or small dump truck like a f550 because you can get into tighter places and also will deliver less then a triaxle load. People will pay that $100 because they may only need a ton or two of something and triaxles have so much work around here no one does less then full loads normally.

I think the best way to build a yard is to shape everything with dirt first. It shouldn't be perfectly flat but a bit of a slope, maybe hummed in the center a bit depending on the circumstances. Once the ground is shaped to shed water then add your gravel.
Also when I order gravel I just get the biggest truck and trailer setup possible. Usually tripple axle end dumps can bring me 27 ton per trip.
I just ordered a ironbull 7x16 gooseneck dump with 8k axel to haul my mini excavator and skidsteer. Can bring in a load of sand for backfill and haul away the excess dirt.

The major benefit of having a dump trailer is you do not have to call somebody and stand around and wait for a load of gravel when you can just get in your truck take your trailer and go and get it yourself. In the morning and if you decide to get in your bobcat and load your trailer with material from your yard you can do that and not have to worry about calling somebody else

Love your Channel man...Just bought a LP16 Big Tex. I have a tilt trailer with 7k axles and wanted a little more margin. I'm not trying to load it to max capacity, but the 16' box also gave me the ability to carry my Mini Ex or Maxo Loader in it and then load some debri at a job site. I sold my old 6x12 dump trailer a couple of years ago and bought a dump truck(C7500) that put me in CDL territory. My insurance company wanted 3k a year for insurance, but I only do this on the side and implement my current small business with it, so It was hard to justify. Nice to have a dump trailer again. BTW, I have looked for your other channel and can't find it. Why not link it here or like it so it shows in your favorites for us to find? Trying to help you hit that 100k or get your numbers up on the other one....Keep up the hard work, it always pays off.

If it were me, I wouldn't try to factor in my own labor rate on my day off. If there's no opportunity cost to your time, I think it's an error to include $100/hr for your own time. The price of the pickup + dump trailer method (on your day off due to weather) is just the materials and the sunk cost of the equipment. This changes the balance-- you paid $600 for the semi operator to do what you could have done for free by spending the rest of the day on it.

for me, 1 hour round trip to the quarry. 12.50-14 per ton depending on what i get. i get 6 tons.
i don't have anywhere for a transfer to swap so singles or super heavy deliveries only if you can get one. most trucks take 15 tons and the cheapest i can get a 15 ton delivery is 450 bucks. owner operators are making about $240/hour off me minus overhead. seems crazy to me.

I have been debating this same conundrum for about a year, my dump trailer will hual about 16k, I use it constantly, overloaded it a few times. Was thinking about a dump truck, but diamond C has a double axle 32k GVWR, and a triple axle 36k pound GVWR and some companies make a 40k GVWR trailer, although they are big money it makes me wonder if they tilt the scales enough or come close enough to a dump truck in some situations, theres obviously some benefits to it given its 70k dollars at diamond C or.else they wouldnt make it. I hual trash once a week to the dump, so my plan is just to hual 17k pounds of gravel back every time I go over the next year.

Dump truck would not pay for you. Unless you drive it all the time, by the time you pay a driver & payroll, have someone to work on it, with license & insurance I don't think it would pay. All trucking companies I've been around figure you have to have 5 trucks to make any money unless you have drivers who can work on the trucks and take very good care of then. Unless you plan on getting bigger with more headaches, I would stick with your dump trailer and higher the big dump jobs done. Like your channel.

Get a truck ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE WORK TO JUSTIFY THE PURCHASE. If not, go the cheaper route and hire a truck for the bigger jobs that would require some hauling that isn't cross country. It all depends on what your job is, do you have the business to keep that purchase going to make money, and keep a piece of equipment steadily busy. Plus several other factors, but this just a start.

Hopefully someone sees this so it's useful: don't do what this guy did. No need for geo textile. Go to your local concrete company and purchase crushed concrete (Typically called "type 2", not number 2 stone, but type two road base). You can buy it for a few dollars a ton ($8 per ton is a normal price). Build yourself a smudge bar for your skid steer. Grade the lot with the smudge bar. Run a few inches of type two. Then cap it with 3/4" crush. It will pack nearly as hard as concrete. The cap will keep it cleaner. What he put down will get mushy with rain and it's expensive. Remember to be strong, the shape of the material must be jagged and there needs to be at least three different dimensional sizes present of proportionally similar volume. They interlock together. The crushed concrete also has unused cerments that will bind chemically over time as it rains.

    • @JM-nt5fm

A Big Tex 16ft dump gooseneck with scissor lift will run you just above $12K brand new. It will transport 6 or 7 tons. It lifts 7 tons no problem. Buy a medium duty daycab for 15K. They are easier to work on and the VT365 is the Ford 6.0 with far less issues. An international 4100 with a VT365 or DT466 will easily pull that trailer. The dump trailer is perfect match for a single bucket from most loader used at many quarries and concrete plants so you aren't wasting the guy's time. No need for 100K worth of equipment, and each run is 1/3 of an end dump. (End dump is 20 to 22 tons). The goal is to get the job done while saving money doing it. In the end the Big Tex can be sold for a high percentage of it's purchase price.

Why not? At least half of my deliveries with my dump trailers are spread. I tell my customers, if you need a large volume of material, call a big truck. I fit in with small loads for the customer that don't want/need a large load or someone that can only afford a small load at a time.
