What a RACE Wow! These are the SCRA racers formally the CRA ( Calif Racing Assoc.) There home track was ASCOT Speedway ( I lived within earshot of) Ascot closed in 1990 then Perris Auto Speedway was built a few years later and became the home track for the SCRA. So almost all of these drivers even the ones from AZ. Like the Gasman Richard Griffin are all So. CALIF Racers. I knew most of them Ricky Gaunt, Mike Kirby, Troy Cline and many more.. I moved from So. Calif. To North Carolina in '97. I just Love Non Wing ( Traditional) Sprint Car racing where they dont lay on the wing but instead back them in like it was intended. This IS Racing at it's best and it shows right here. Never a boring night its racing on steroids! Thanks for posting this video it brought back great memories.
The power:weight on these is incredible. A little over 400 cid alcohol burner pushing a 1300-1500 pound car. I worked at a machine shop and the owner was buddies with a guy who raced these. He'd bring in that Gaerte Racing engine to be rebuilt every other week. Depending on the tune, he said it would push 700-900 hp. I noticed they were pulling the left front wheel completely off the ground going down the straight. That's some monster torque.
Garrett, What a treat, all we had was speed sport news for these races. This is reliving great racing by the SCRA. Thanks to you and Ronnie Shoeman greatly 🏁💪🏆
I worked on Troy Cline’s team during this time period. Lots of SCRA races at Perris were like this. Gasman, Rip, Troy, Cory, Kirby and a bunch more were great to watch.
@@ronfox5519 Certainly better nerf to nerf racing on 3/8 and shorter tracks IMO. The wing is safer I believe even with higher speeds though. Bottom line for me, I grew up at SMS and, CRA on 1/3 heavy high banked clay was thrilling as $#@& RIP Doug Fort.
Absolutely the TRUTH. That's traditional Sprint Car racing at it's best. Most all these racers are the Ascot guys.. after Ascot closed in 90 a couple years later Perris Auto Speedway was built and it became the CRA/ SCRA new home. Here they were on the Midwest Tour. What a race. I know almost everyone of those drivers and they are the best in Non-Wing 410 ci. Sprint car racers on the planet. ;0)
You my friend were treating those people to a memory of a lifetime. Good on you. A " high five and two fist pumps" to your goodness for others. California sprint car fan here. ⛱️🏁🌊🏆
Or,.....put the So. Cal SCRA on the clay. Non wing 410 sprint car fields were strong then. Those mid west tours are surly missed. Things change in time. I fully agree on track prep here as those guys liked 'em heavy with a curb. ✌️🏁
They are sprint cars, back in the early 2000s there were a lot of chassis builders compared to today, so more unique looking cars, and the gas tanks were bigger cause the SCRA drivers ran bigger tracks on the west coast.
I used to go to Ascot quite a bit I’ll never forget some of the great races there Dean Thompson Bubby jones and so many others others I can’t remember really miss that place
They're not sprintcars ... On the prison island formerly known as Australia when we invented speedway we soon learnt to put chain mesh fences around the track to catch cars , you got some catching up to do. Cool crash though.... How long is the track and what sort of times are they doing? ...

It was a good race but not greatest sprint car race. Not saying it was the greatest sprint race but on Oct 21, 2023 at Devils Bowl speedway with the World of Outlaws would top this race.

Great driving .... what a race !
Those NWWC races were incredible
I’m so old I remember when NASCAR was exciting.
GREAT RACE!!!!!
Non wing is ALWAYS so much better. Much more pure form of motorsports.
Agreed. It has always puzzled me as to why non wing isn't more popular. They are the best type of short track racing.

May GOD Bless Glen Howard for putting SCRA together. I ran the first two years with all these legends. @ 60yo. now, easily my best racing memories.
Were you at Las Vegas for the June 2003 race?
I feel sprint cars look better without, down force wings.
Great race. Watched troy often at Ventura raceway.
SCRA was the best sanctioning body in Southern California. The years between 1996 and 2004 were the best years.
If this was the greatest sprint car race of all time no one would have crashed.
Legit racing!
Loved CRA. Used to take loads to Cali just so I could go to ASCOT to watch them

You neglected to say The Greatest Announcer Of All Time !!!!
Terrific!
Lol. They are tearing the hell out of that race track!!! Lol
If greatness is measured by wrecks and maniacal driving, this is definitely THE race.
Good post. Anybody try to count the lead changes?
The dude on the outside drove twice as far as everyone else 😂
the greatest race of all time took place at chula Vista in 1982
Interesting post, Garrett. Thank you.
Were these cra cars bigger than a usac sprinter? They look to be halfway between a sprint and a silver crown.
