I love that song "Your Partner" - I actually had recorded it to audio cassette back in the day off the TV! Same with the song from the episode before where the woman sings to her baby "More Than Enough." Great show.
I love this show! I was just thinking… All those homeless people were AMAZING singers and performers ( great voices AND great rhythm) so I'm thinking, they could probably form some sort of group and EARN their way out of the hood…
In watching these episodes now, I am now reflecting on the fact that even though I personally enjoyed some of the singing (not all the songs - they could have done without the one in the ad agency for instance in this episode in my opinion) the acting and storylines and execution of the general show was I think up there with any really, really good police show and I think this could have been ahead if it had been simply about the LAPD, life in Los Angeles, maybe, indeed, interactions with the mayor and chief of police etc. - I think the show without the singing would have been a hit. Bochco did amazing work (obviously, with quite a number of hits) and this would have gone down as another gem in the Steven Bochco Crown. The Broadway musical thing just I think through people off and it wasn't what audiences wanted (clearly) so it unfortunately tanked. I really liked all the characters, however, and over the course of several seasons, it could have been very interesting to see the character development of everybody on the show. Really solid performances and excellent writing, etc!
