I love how this game showed that even though it was Lovecraftian, it went on a different path where it was a lady who sought her husband for the sake of love. There was no innate fear and in fact a sense of belinging once she found her way to the end. Everything was colourful and enlightening instead of the trope of it being dark and hopeless. The game developers did a superb job on breaking this mold and I love it
We should remember that in a story of madness a single perspective can never be wholly trusted. Who's to say Nora in the going to the sea ending is not fulfilling a descent into insanity, colorful and happy as it might seem?
Not all madness is perceived as horrible darkness by the sufferer; euphoria can distort perspective just as much, and make one equally ignorant of the true consequences/reality of their actions. The fact that the sea ending requires her rejection of love & humanity would fit thematically as well. Her feelings of belonging and peace might very well be a false construct, beckoning her with promises of happiness that in reality only exist within her fractured psyche. So it could still be all dark & hopeless, just behind a pretty illusion.
And, as is appropriate for a Lovecraft tale, love is a kind of madness as well so either choice Nora gives in. Fun all around!
@@cr1197We should remember that in a story of madness, no number of perspectives should be trusted, except for those who are mad. And by definition: those should not be trusted either.
I liked your analysis. But I doubt it is objectively sane. 🫣
Still more terrifying then Lovecraft’s original work.
"A true love story dosent end with a wedding, it ends with a funeral and the only thing that eases the pain is all those loving memories"
DAMN
that hit hard!
i'm usually annoyed by romance genre cause its ALWAYS the cliche "boy meets girl, falls in love, meet rivals, wins girl, then story ends with a wedding or a promise to get married"
Every. single. time.
but Norah just opened up my eyes a little, enough to appreciate romance beyond that cliche genre type
On the contrary I think a true love story begins with a wedding
@@lolzman999 I feel like marrying someone before you fall in love with them might have the sequence of events backwards
Yeah, that's not the cheesiest, wishy-washiest thing ever. "I'm gonna die a painfull death but it's for LOOOVE so it's okay". Never seen that one before.
@@asverith wow. someone woke up with a thorn bush up their ass
I'm pretty sure when Harry said she "left" he meant she died.
This is the impression I got too when I played it myself.
Not often that games have multiple GOOD endings. Granted, neither one is without its sadness too, but they both kept loving each other for the rest of their lives.
Sadly, in the ocean one. The two of them singing is a memory. The girl has no mind, she is all for the elder god, no thought
I think the second one is the only good one. How many rights did women even have in the 1930s? And as much as Harry did, it's still the 1930s. Idt it's really possible to have grown up in that time without being some kind of misogenist. Plus she dies a painful death when she goes back while in the second ending she can reunite with her fellow fish people.
I'm two years late but I guess this video reached me right when it needed to. "A true love story doesn't end with a wedding, it ends with a funeral." This hits hard now, I miss you, my love
Not sure if the comments brought it up already, but when I put the R'lyehian through an online translator, what Norah hears in her lucid dreams and the second ending translates to "Return home, lost daughter. Return home, Norah," and what Norah says in the second ending roughly translates to "I am home". Maybe that's why I like the second ending more. (Edited to shoo away typos)
Thank you! This changes the whole ending for me.
It's also important to look at Norah's journal when she's inside the final sanctuary chamber (or also when she's dreaming in the desert in chapter 4), to look at her family tree and find out who her ancestor actually is.
@@Kumagoro42who is it?
I can’t thank you enough for playing this, as I never would have known it existed. I’ve loved lovecraftian stories my entire life, and this is now one of my favorites! It subverted every theme I thought necessary for cosmic horror, and yet resonated emotionally more than any Cthulhu mythos story in the last decade.
So the word "ichor" is is Greek suffix and it means "blood of the gods." It is commonly referred as the literally blood that is flowing through the veins of an immortal being. I am surprised it is depicted as black ooze/ liquid in this game because typically it is a golden viscous liquid.
The only reason I know about "ichor" is because of Michael from Vsauce and his video explaining how "petrichor" is the "the smell of rain" but he equated to "the blood of the Earth"
I've only ever heard of ichor as black ichor, never gold.
The smell of rain is the smell of decomposing particles in the dirt and it is chemically like very very good for your brain, especially young developing brains. So yeah Idk the idea of it as blood of the earth... Like in the lifeblood sense... Sort of like natures umbilical chord tying us to the earth and nature... Yeah I like that. Thats nice.
Oh wow, that's cool about the word petrichor! Didn't even know that word. I also only know of ichor in a black ooze context from various IPs.
I love that you can tell Gab has played so many of these types of games and HOGs that she says "huh" and "hum" exactly like a character from the games.
The end credits with all the 'thank you' s in different languages really hit me. Ow my heart. What a very kind and personal touch.
22:18 - Ha, sorry about that, I'm a Lovecraftian lore nerd ╰(▔∀▔)╯. Speaking of which, Y'ha-nthlei is a sister underwater city of fish people to the one you see at the end (appears in The Shadow Over Innsmouth) which means ironically that Robert, also a human-to-fish person from that story, is indeed Norah's cousin
I have to give big congrats to game creators, they did a great job meshing so many Lovecraft elements - Cyclopean architecture, non-euclidean geometry, stars aligning for destiny, a tragic/terrifying twist, and of course comic revelations - without going the route so many other Lovecraft games tend to go (monsters & jump scares galore). It's so amazingly well done
Also kudos to them for all the Lovecraft cameos & easter eggs even the far out one of (1:17:00) Pnakotus, home of the Great Race of Yith who time travel by switching minds with beings. Guess Harry's mind got swapped out by one of them for a bit. That said, don't know why they had an Elder God in the end since the Deep Ones aren't exactly on friendly terms with them ^_^;;
Was Father Dagon at the end, wasn't it? Or at least, I remember when I played it, there was a scene where Norah sees Father Dagon in the distance and the game calls him exactly that.
🤣🤣 I said the exact same thing! “How do they keep building tents, when they don’t take their old ones with them?” Also, you have to do all these puzzles while Harry just somehow finds a hole or path inside places. 😂😂
“We shall swim out to that brooding reef in the sea and dive down through black abysses to Cyclopean and many-columned Y'ha-nthlei, and in that lair of the Deep Ones we shall dwell amidst wonder and glory forever.”
- H.P. Lovecraft.
Great gameplay as always, thank you.
me after this game: “i don’t have an autoimmune disease, i just need to return to the black ichor and go to alien atlantis”
No sick only fish
"She left him to go die somewhere?" Gab is so adorable. She probably believed her parents when they told her the dog "ran away" and came back a week later just a little smaller.
I sorta thought they could just live on the island together? wouldn't that just fix everything? shes healthy, and de dude just has to avoid the black goo. They could grow food etc, go back to the mainland every once in a while for stuff not available on the island.
(also, they'd miss the ww2 so that's a plus tbh) only downside would be his ageing, but if she stays on the island without doing the last transform thingie, wouldn't she just age normally as well? just healthier?
I may be reading to much into this lmao
I think just being on the island starts to drive people crazy,,,
My thoughts exactly! But I think the island slowly chips away at the mind? Still, I wish they could've found a way to make it work
@@mckenzybyfield2578 Ohh, I thought it was the black goo that made them lose their minds. makes sense though, the island isn't made for 'normal people'
She states towards the ending that whilst the crew were unwelcomed and the island basically punished them for overstaying she, on the other hand, was welcomed and she felt as though she belonged there, because she did.
Given how very very VERY BAD island fighting got in WW2, might not want to be on an island during the whole thing.
¨I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone.¨
Completely missing the fact that she wouldn't be alone, she'd be with her fellow fish people. (Not critizing you, just idk why in the game she's acting like she'd be alone)
I believe that in the ending where she returns home to Harry that the games wants us to infer that she died that March morning, and that she didn't simply just disappear.
I don't think she actually left him, she said she wanted the last thing she wanted to see were his blue eyes, I think she died on a march morning. This is reminding me of my mother, grandmother and my mother's father. He died when she was twelve, because of his time in the navy. My grandmother. I don't think she ever really recovered. I don't really know how I feel about her because she became very... different to my mother from what I've heard of her before. I wonder how all of us would have turned out if he did national service in the army or airforce instead.
same. I think when Harry said "she left me" he meant it as in she left the world on that March morning.
@@BlueChloe99 I agree. Death is often described as 'leaving' someone behind or leaving this life.
Have to admit this was a pretty cool game. Not something I would normally play, but that's why I like watching you, to see games I wouldn't normally play.
Holy shit, Yuri Lowenthal voiced Harry. Yuri also voiced Luke Fon Fabre in Tales of the Abyss, one of my favorite JRPGs.
Don't forget that he also did the PS4 Spider-Man.
He also voiced the many characters and NPC in Hitman
@@zerobarge718 For me, Yuri Lowenthal is as much the definitive Peter Parker/Spider-Man as Kevin Conroy is the definitive Bruce Wayne/Batman!
💚🤗🤗💚
1:02:00 "If you've lived all your life in a prison, how would you know that you are a prisoner?"
A sentiment echoed in American Arcadia.
I am so excited that this came out today. I was on the edge of my seat at the end of the last episode of this game.
They should have bought Norah on this expedition as well, she seems to have a way greater understanding of what needs to be done..and I think I know why lol
I think he didn’t because he thought she was to ill to make the journey. No one knew she got better the closer she came to the island
I JUST finished the game. I had to come watch your playthrough :) The entire game I was a little confused about where her sickness came from. I was expecting some sort of grand twist. BUT if you open the journal after the throne room scene it shows a large family tree that goes all the way back to Obed and Pth’thya-l’yi Marsh of Innsmouth fame. What a tremendous Lovecraftian experience!
The puzzles were cool, but the story was weird.
@@virtualpilgrim8645not really
When harry said she left him, he didnt mean literally, he meant she died, Gab
It's me, ya boi HP! Back at it again with the fish people! 🐟
I really wish they had written her love for him more heavily into the 2nd ending. I don't like that she just forgot him. I would rather her choice have been out of a different sort of love. To recognize that he loved her so much, it would be a kindness to not make him helplessly watch her be in pain until she died. If she goes he could know that he did save her and take solace that even if she's not with him, she'd be happy and free from sickness.
Gab playing as a fish person 🐠
Gab also wanting each fish 🍣
I only am here to say love the ending but it has too many chopped onions, my eyes hurt.
HOLY CRAP! What an AMAZING game! What a wonderful way to tell a love craftian story! THis was sooo amazing! I am BLOWN AWAY! Such nice visuals, and voice acting and such, just WOW! How wonderful! Thanks for playing it Gab!
What a beautiful and sad game ;; I loved the aesthetic and the story of course ~
I admire Gab so much with the puzzles that would have driven me mad.
I still wonder how the mother got the illness though. And I wished we could've seen her fish design.
Alternatively, they moved near the sea - she might have, in the final throes of her illness, walked into the sea on pure instinct. Which is also sad, but I think he does mean a metaphor for death there.
Wow, I really loved this playthrough. Good story and absolutely stunning to look at. And thank you for uploading so quickly after you streamed. Cant always get Twitch to cooperate with my internet and I couldn't wait to see the end! Also, my brain feels more wrinkly having watched you solve all of those puzzles. A++
Great game and great gameplay.
I'm not even halfway through the vid and I don't know a lot about the story, but I have a thought.
So Norah started feeling better when she got to the island. She has the same illness as her mother. Does that possibly mean that the mom died because she wasn't on the island to transform or something?
Again, just a thought from someone who knows very little of the story and isn't even halfway through the vid.
yeah by the end of the video the story is very much more clear. :)
love what the developers did with this take on a lovecraftian tale!! it had hints of the dread, existential horror but still had a very different mood! bravo!
I‘m so sad about not seeing anyone in that „city“ because I don’t want her to be alone🙁
I loved everything about this game. I'm glad I got to see it. But I wish we could've seen more of the people leaving in the underwater city
I got goosebumps at the credits of ending! Such a cute and just amazing looking game
Yuri Lowenthal?!? Damn! I couldn't tell at all that was him. Loved this. Beautiful game with exceptional story telling.
I appreciate that Norah and Gab have the same "Mmm" when thoughtful.
I was teary eyed by the endings. True love ends with a funeral, what a wow line. When she started coughing I went 'oh no' ;;; This is such a good game! The colours, the music, the story, the voice acting! I was amazed with the constellation puzzles because I was ??? the whole time Gab was solving them haha
Couldn't they both live on Tahiti and have her travel to the island once in a while? That would prolong their live for a long while and with the skills that Harry had he would find work there.
I took the "left me on a sunny March morning" to be an abstract leaving, like death, but maybe you're right and she knew she was dying and left to go somewhere
and maybe that somewhere was back to the island
What an AMAZING game! Thanks for the expirence gabb.
40:18 that's an alternative musical notation. The same idea they use in vietnam for gamelan music. The irony made me giggle when she said: this technology never ceases to amazeXD
Awh the ending already 😩 such a great game !
So it took me a second time watching this but her visions are foreshadowing the alternative ending choices. I do not want to spoil it but when she is in the Dryed Ocean vision, she sees her cane, her and a man, and he being sick bound. Earlier on, we saw visions of a fish person being drowned by the black liquid and then swimming. Throughout this episode we see more visions and definitely leaning more toward the Fish Person vision.
I’m so glad you played this! Thank you! I love everything aesthetically about it! The color harmony and music is lovely.
Omg that first ending punched me in the feelings but it is a “love wins” ending for me. If I was in her situation and I had to choose, I would choose love too ❤️❤️❤️ but omg, the second ending 🤭 also really impactful!...but I love a love story, so I would still pick the first one.
Cried for almost 5 minutes after the first ending lmfao I had to stop it and get some tea ugh
Love your work... And keep making such nice videos.. I love such a adventure and puzzle type games.. Been a fan of treasure hunt movies since I was young... And i like your playstyle.. So just a request on playing more of such games...
I love your playthroughs Gab! I’ve been trying to finish this one for over 3 weeks but I allways fall asleep. I have a severe case of insomnia but your vibe and voice makes me feel secure and relaxed, and so I fall asleep. I’m so happy I found your channel, and when I am ”up and at them” I watch your whole videos in one go! Thank you for being you and bringing us these amazing playthroughs!
I absolutely love watching your let’s plays. I’d never play these on my own. Such A lovely game play!
I hate how these games never show the cool elder gods.
The thing about these eldritch gods is that showing them in full takes away the scale and mystery. A lot of the books portray them as things that mortal minds can never comprehend, some of them even turning people insane at the mere sight of them. Glimpses are all we get just to show that they are a looming presence that is there and something so big that they usually don't even actively participate in your journey.
@@41tinman41 yeah but we're real life people who just wanna see big grotesque monsters. That's The most interesting thing about the lovecraft universe. Just seeing a distant shadow for a few seconds and then mention elder gods occasionally in a 5 hour game gets old really fast. I don't even know what a lovecraftian game is. Feels like people can just do that and claim it's a lovecraftian game.
@@kurushi857 A Lovecraftian game, at least to me, is one where an Eldritch god or creature is the driving force that starts the events of the game you are in. Whether it was summoned, worshipped, killed, or otherwise. It centers on that unfathomable entity that is beyond what we are able to affect. It adds to that sense of "what if this terrible, big bad is something present in MY world?" and that fear of the unknown that is far scarier than just a huge ass monster. A daikaiju is what you're after, it seems like.
@@kurushi857 I feel like it's more boring knowing what the monster is. Seeing the monster even at the end takes away all the suspense.
@@41tinman41 well then most of these so called lovecraftian games have failed. They're all just typical mystery puzzle games with some lovecraft inspired backstory thrown in. There's no atmosphere of looming doom. I'm not just looking for big grotesque monsters. I'm looking for big grotesque lovecraftian monsters.
I legit sobbed at the first ending. The second ending felt more like what Elsa did so I also felt that somewhat. The untranslated language made it weird though haha
What a great way to spend christmas eve! Watching a chill gameplay, enjoying the great story and lore, and just having fun. Thnks gabs!
I really enjoyed this duo of videos, it was a wonderful art style and the story was intiguing. I must admit my mind melted a bit at some of the puzzles!
Didn't catch this during the local lockdowns (Philippines), but I'm so glad I got wind of this through algo. Got me bawling! Great game!
Thank you for sharing this game with us, it's really cool !
This is another good one, many times it's hard to get the Lovecraft mythos right, however this is another one that seems to do a good job.
WHAT A GAMEEEEEE! I loved everything about this, from the puzzles to the amazing art and color work. Every time you took the words out of my mouth. Thank you so much for playing games like these!
She didn’t leave him.. she passed away. But she was with him 🥺
Found this game on the ps store and halfway through I thought “i bet gab would have a playthrough of this”, checked and here i am lol.
I chose the ending where she stayed but only because i thought harry worked so hard and so many good people died for this cause, it couldn’t have been or nothing but it wasn’t acknowledged in the end lmao
Man, puzzle in the Fish head with the diamonds took me HOURS to do and I eventually stumbled across the answer by mistake! It was SO infuriating. Brilliant game other than that!
I absolutely LOVE this game! Wow! I totally agree with your choice, Gab. I too would live out my final days with my love.
Story telling of this game was great. Reminded me a bit about the Broken Sword stories.
I just finished watching this playthrough and oh my, I never felt something like this after so many years, after Dreamfall series actually. This is such a beautiful game, thank you so much for this content.
I especially liked they were White,
I can't believe it took me this long to watch this game. But I had to after American Arcadia. I had this in my watch later list but forgot about it until it was mentioned in American Arcadia.
Wow... this was such a good game even if my brain hurt from just watching sometimes. I wasn't able to catch all the recommendations for the games that are similar to this one
Her condition improved dramatically just by being on the island.
So couldn't they have made a life there? Sure it's far from civilization and they'd have to rely on nature to survive.
Then again... Considering they said the island was attacking the expedition (sort of) could he had lived with her in peace?
Now this was totally my kind of game!! A little mystery, a great story, lots of puzzles and a choice ending!! I am with you Gab!! I choose a slow painful death if it meant I could be with the one I love!!❤❤❤. Great game, thanks Gab!!!
It's so sad hearing Gab say "1930 that's how things were. 2020 sucks but things are progressing and moving"
Sadly everything seems to be reverting at this point.
That quote about love ending with a funeral really hit me hard. I feel like it applies to all kinds of love too, like family love, friendship love, romantic love, etc. To love and to be loved is the most important thing in life. It made me think of the loved ones I’ve lost - “the loves that ended with funerals”. I miss them so much… And I gotta remember to never take my loved ones for granted for as long as we all live.
Just woke up, best notification ever! Yesterday I finished the first video, I'm obsessed
That first ending absolutely wrecked me.
I do not know how much Gab cut of the full play through.... but it took me much longer to solve some puzzles....
Also both ending are bitter, because when she comes back to him, she dies after few years. So basically Harry stays alone in both ending....
Such a great game play! Loved it!! 💛 though wish she could've had more time!
I don’t know how you stream games with endings like these both of them made me ugly cry hahaha 😭 what a beautiful game 🥹
Such a beautiful game. I appreciated it so much with your help. Thank you.
In one of lovecrafts long poems or short stories members of her family turned when they hit puberty but she was waiting for the love of her life who left on a ship and got lost at sea and while she waited she got sicker and sicker.
I’ve been watching since 2017. Your play throughs are so relaxing and calming. I remember when you played resident evil hd remastered.
I took it as she died that morning in March.
Also there's a paper in the garbage at that last campsite.
Where the husband tells the lady to leave and deliver the knife to his wife...so hmmm
The rain sound was making me very sleepy 😴 Your content is wonderful, as always. 💜
4:15 I kinda got Close Encounters of the Third Kind vibes from that
I hear that too! That's an awesome movie.
"Oh no, they're making me choose!" *pauses the game and manually saves*
That. Felt a little too real as a gamer myself.
Awww the ending :(
this game was so good i binged watched both episodes in one day :D couldnt wait for the ending
18:18 this scene makes me feel like we're going to meet Doomguy ... 😂
The true love ends with a funeral line made me burst into tears, wtf
Duuuuuuude that part around 24 minutes in was AWESOME
Edit: OH THAT FIRST ENDING WAS- ohhh that HIT
and that she didn’t cough in the second ending in their song… it felt to me like they were maybe still singing together, though perhaps while separated by many many miles…
Love that Princess and the Frog moment😂❤️
Damm you drew those hand amazing
Not a video game ending having me in tears.
I would make bank as a fish, doing salvage work, archeology, mapping underwater caves for divers, submarine rescue! I could do alotta good as a fish! Also makes me think of the movie Shape of Water...
Also Abzu
I almost want to catch one of your streams; your chat seems so pleasant and witty!
Such a lovely, lovely game 🖤 I absolutely loved it. I envy their true love. However, I would have left and gone to join the elder gods and my own people… sorry Harry.
Aw this was *so* good 😭😭! The story, the art style... 😍.
I know the voice actor is the same woman who was in firewatch, she does a good English accent.
P.s- have you ever heard of a game called Erica? I saw some of it yesterday and it looks like a very you game. Maybe a suggestion for the future 🥺
This may be pointless to say now since this video is a few years old, but I think Abzu would be a wonderful game for Gab to play
During the long swimming cutscene she mentioned it reminded her of Journey, and Abzu is made by the same people and is basically Journey but in the ocean :)
10/10 for story telling, feels like i read a really good book, accompanied by excellent visuals. I totally just blank during the puzzle part hahaha
Oooo I loved the underwater house/rooms!
