The 1619 Project is a major initiative from The New York Times observing the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery in Britain’s North American colonies. It aims to reframe the reframe the history of the United States, placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story.

This project was excellent. I put this together about 30 years ago whilst studying social movements and made many of the same connections as Hannah. She deserves great respect.

This Project is excellent! The whole media conversation is really needed for the education of young people in the U.S. Challenging all of us to investigate the intention of making decisions. It's important that we bear the responsibility of our own humanity. Knowing the facts of our history sets the stage for this nation to realize the value of all of its members and for each member to realize it's origin.
Loved this informative conversation. Also, enjoyed reading "The 1619 Project", one of the best history books ever written.
This is an amazing interview. First of all, Nikole's work is still resonating throughout our country. To show the history of slavery in the US is still interwoven into the fabric of our country is the perfect answer why race relations here haven't improved today.
The biggest thing is in order to heal. In order for our country to be it's best self, this must be addressed out in the open so it can be dealt with. We can't pretend anymore that we're out best selves. We must know the truth about ourselves and in order to do that, we must be honest with our history. It's not anti American to do that.
This is bigger than ideology or theories. I'm a descendant of slaves and slaveowners; Chattel Slavery via The Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. That should be shameful for our country to have that as part of our history. It's something that we shouldn't gloss over to have a manufactured false unity because that's an illusion. The only way we'll have unity is to be honest with our history so that fences can be mended, bridges can be repaired and our country live up to what the Declaration of independence said, We Hold These Truths to be Self Evident. That All Men are Created Equal and That We Have The Right to Life, Liberty and The Pursuit Of Happiness. That should be our ideal always.

4.5 months later, she won the Pulitzer. By the way, Africans being grouped together is wrong. They did not see themselves as united in that way. That is an external view. They were tribes. Europeans at one point, did not see themselves all as whites, or all as Europeans. That came later.

@@mitziivey8405 Because he should not have indulged Obama's extreme accommodation agenda. Gates should have cursed that cop out, because they dropped the charges on him. Acting like he broke into his own damn house, and that cop didn't like Gates acting "uppity", so he wanted to pull rank. That's all. It was a complete power trip. Obama commented that the cop acted stupidly, which he did, but he basically walked it back, and wanted to help the two bury the hatchet, when really, that would have been the best time to have begun investigation into police behavior way before BLM even had a chance to exist.
But Gates shouldn't have showed up for that. Gates' work in other things, especially the genealogy shows and things like this, this is more of his wheelhouse.

I respect Dr. Gates but, I am disappointed with his handling of this interview. It’s as if, he’s trying to play safe and muzzle the work she has done. Abounds a little house-ish vs the field.

he's a historian and hes trying to legitimize her work because there are parts in it thats wrong , he's telling her to definitely go through historians before they get the book publish or it will be criticized and made a joke by reputable historians

He is a historian, speaker, pro black, and has been fighting the good fight for over 40 years. There aren't many black historians who have worked in education and wrote books and helped us find our roots. truly a brillant brotha.

@@bigbluebeats3591 One of the most credible newspapers in the world? I'm not sure about that now. But regardless, there were big internal fights about it. Internally the Times is now a divided organization. Those arguments spilled into public view when serious scholars critiqued the work, a few revisions were subsequently made to the published piece without being explained, and the internal process by which all of that occurred was shown to be about ideology, not the work itself.

She must be good to have a job at UNC, her alma mater, but don't produce fake history as real history. It was worldwide for millenniums. I love history & we have to learn fro true depictions of history. 1619 was when England brought one. 1776 is when America started.

She’s another person (similar to Gates) who missed the black experience when she was growing up because she is bi-racial, had both parents and lived a pretty good life, went to schools with whites, probably lived around white people all her life.But now she has to prove her blackness by coming up with this 1619 project!!!! She has forgotten about how she became successful and is now going to blame slavery for all of our problems. If we followed the same life path as her parents laid for her, maybe, just maybe we would get better outcomes. It not a racial problem, it’s a culture problem!!!

Yes, and that culture is that which was fomented by US laws dated back to the earliest colonies that systematically denied rights and equality to black and indigenous people.
