The beginning of 1993 brought sad news of the death of AW veteran actress Constance Ford, known to AW fans as Rachel's beloved mother Ada Hobson. This great, tough, no-nonsense lady was the epitome of "saying it like it was" and inspired many with her truth and wisdom. Her passing was truly a great loss to the show. The brief storyline where we learn of Ada's falling ill and eventual passing is presented here in her memory.
In Part 4, Marley and Dennis arrive with Clarice followed by Aunt Liz with Jake and Paulina. Matt, Jake and Paulina wonder who is going to believe in them now that Ada is gone. Nancy explains what happened with Ada's ashes. Everyone is amused by the story and feel that somehow Ada had something to do with it. John and Kelsey then arrive, followed by Felicia. Jake continues to feel threatened by Ian but Paulina tells him that the day is supposed to be about Ada.
Jake overhears Iris and Rachel's conversation about KBAY. When Clarice and Nancy catch up with Rachel, they toast to Ada, along with Amanda and Aunt Liz, with oatmeal chocolate chip cookies that Clarice made.
John and Kelsey ask Cass and Frankie about the trial while Matt, Jenna, Dean and Lorna remember Ada playing Dean's song at Paradise. Hank Kent arrives and Iris is touched.
Rachel tells Kelsey about Jamie in Somalia then wishes for Cass and Frankie that they win their case. She then begins to bond with Felicia, expressing gratitude that Felicia had the courage to approach her. Matt then urges her to begin the ceremony, but she feels unable to do so and tearfully asks him to do so.
This storyline was a beautifully executed honor to Constance Ford, who passed away from cancer. True to the character the writers had honored over the years, Ada did it her own way!! Thank you.
People forget the stage legend that Irene Dailey was. She was in the original "Subject Was Roses" and replaced Eileen Heckart in "You Can't Hear the Water Running". She took over the role of the grandmother in "Lost in Yonkers" and got acclaim as the nurse in "The Father" several years after this.
I was friends with "Clarice's" son and she used to drive me to school. My mom watched the show and she taped this episode to show me this part because I had no idea she was on TV. So weird to find this after so many years.

Clarice is acting like she hasn't seen Amanda since she was a child. She saw her 4 years previously at Mac's funeral.

Unbelievable that this is here. This is the only episode I misssed since the early 60's. I had lost power that day so my VCR was not working. What a special treat...THANK YOU.

fans should write these shows. Clairice met Amanda as an adult years later when Mack died. She never saw Amanda with braces

Not to mention Audra Lindley, who played Liz for 5 years as a real beotch. She was the Phoebe Tyler of Bay City.

AW was shot in Brooklyn, DOOL was always on the West Coast with the other SONY owned soaps (Y&R and B&B). AW, ATWT, and GL (the P&G soaps) were all shot in Manhattan/Brooklyn. ATWT moved to AW's sound stage in Brooklyn because it was bigger, leaving GL in Manhattan using the CBS studios.

Ok, this scene is full of problems based on poor writing. Clarice had just been in Bay City when Mac died and saw Amanda then (married to Sam with a baby). So the line "when did the braces come off" is just sloppy writing. Also, Dennis's line about Clarice telling him and Marley stories about Ada was also poor writing - Dennis grew up with Jamie and had known Ada most of his life, and Marley also knew Ada (after all, Ada was part owner of Mary's Place, which was part owned by Jake's uncle Vince, and Jake and Marley spent a great deal of time at Mary's Place), never mind the fact that both Vicky and Marley dated Jamie, who was Ada's grandson. The Clarice line always bugged me, but I just noticed the Dennis/Marley lines, which are out of whack with the show's history.
Completely. I did not understand the comment Dennis making Clarice telling us stories on the way over. Dennis Carrington (NOT WHEELER) knew Ada even before Clarice did. However, he was a child during these days but it is really really bad writing. Macs funeral, Clairice acted like she never even met Amanda saying "OMG they are all grown up". I am surprised VW or other actors on the show just never corrected the writers about real history or maybe they did it is irrelvalant in soap world where things dont make sense years later..

I admit to have missed several years worth of episodes (including this one) but who was the couple who came along with Clarice at the Cory house?

and Dennis Wheeler (Carrington in my eyes,at least he was when he came back in 89 for the anniversary) does not need to know about stories about Ada form Clarice. He spent his entire childhood in Bay City with Ada and it was a pivotal part of the storylines in the 70's. who was writing at this point? morons but i guess the show was complete crap in the 90s anyway
Dennis and Jamie were best friends in the '70s, so yes, Dennis would have had his own stories about Ada. If anything, he and Clarice would have been comparing notes and not one educating the other. Come on, writers. Even Harding Lemay adjusted every once in a while when he found out things he didn't know about the characters he was writing and all he had was fan letters back then!

I always loved this soap and was so sad to see it cancelled!! Got hooked with the Sam and Amanda storyline!! I was never a fan of Matthew Cory and seeing him with that stupid ponytail makes me remember why I was never crazy about him!! lol
The actress who plays Nancy also appeared in the horror film the unborn around this time while returning to another world for ada funeral . Her co star in the film was lisa kudral her pre. Friends role as phoebe. Also a popular comediane was in it I dont remember her name but she is the one who got in hot water for that head of then president donald satan trump. So funny but anyway it's a pretty good movie.

Jensen Buchanan was only interested in playing Vicky. She hated playing both sisters, and her Marley was awful. Ellen's Marley was the gold standard, but Anne perfected her version of Marley during her last year on AW. Anne was the best at playing both Marley/Vicky. I was happy when Ellen returned to play Marley in an attempt to save AW in the late 1990s.
Nancy encountered three dif versions of Vicky and I would have had her say “Vicky, every time I see you, you look so different!” 😜

I never thought she was cast correctly to play Ada's daughter and Rachel's half-sister. I think she was only in the role for 3 years before being written out just as Amanda was about to return to Bay City.
