Hi! I saw in a few videos that you have trouble finding models with long, non-layered hair. My hair is down to my tush, no layered, and it's flat at the bottom, more or less. I'm on the east coast and willing to travel if you ever need a model for a video or anything, particularly if it's Roman hair :-). Or if you're in NYC. I figure why else have long hair if you can't play? Thanks!
It's always wonderful to look deeper in the beauty habits through history. All these problems and common failures make it all so familiar and 'present-day' ^^. Thanks.
As a history major and a braiding enthusiast this is the perfect channel for me! When you talked about hiding the ends it reminded me of all the tutorial videos I've watched and how they always talk about hiding the "unsightly" details as well - "wrap hair around your elastics to hide it, make sure your bobby pins aren't sticking out" - I love seeing how humans have always been the same throughout history
Janet you are a Steampunk Goddess!! Absolutely loved the Victorian Vernacular you included throughout the entire video!! Queen Victoria herself would marvel at your exquisite grace & aptitude for this quintessential Victorian ‘up Do’ !! Do you frequent Steampunk events?? I’m sure Steampunk Chicago would love to have you at one of their next events ( Vourteque on Insta)
Fantastic Video Janet - thanks you soooooo much. I can't believe I didn't know you could boil, so to speak the weaving hair this way. I use it to make braids for my natural gray hair but because of the kinks in it I have to cover it over with hair extensions which aren't quite long enough for that 1930's Ginger Rogers style I love so much. But now I will explore this approach. LOVE your videos. Thanks again.
Absolutely amazing. Beautiful. I can now see the great need for a lady maid's to "dress" her mistress's hair. This is awesome and is quite entertaining to watch. What women will do to embellish and adorn their tresses with tricks of the trade never ceases to amaze me. Bellissima!
This was a fun video, and still very informative! I binge watched tons of your videos today and just wanted to say thank you for bringing history alive, you are so talented!
This video was lovely. I loved how posh your speech was. IT was as if I was listening to an audio tutorial from the era. I hope to see more hairstyles from the 17th -19th centuries in the future.
Wow just discovered your channel and you need to post way more! Your videos are so educational and you give such a good explanation of everything. I wish there were more steampunk and historical inspired styles on UA-cam
I was JUST watching the Sisi movies the other night and wondering how her hair was done. Thank you so much for the tutorial. You're always so informative!
I wish it was possible to "love it" with a heart button. But I do love this, absolutely. And I am inspired for Halloween. Holy moly I knew there was a reason to subscribe to you. Hands down, my favorite tutorial! Thank you for something fresh to those of us, who don't know old ways of doing things. I am inspired by you, and now want to go to cosmetology school to learn more.
This tutorial is cracking me up!!! You are so diligent to the historicity of hairstyles and a stickler for accuracy, so it's fun to see you throw it all to the wind and have fun!!
Beautiful work Miss Janet! I could watch your videos all day. Though I admit that I kept expecting you to call out "Oi! Watch it, Spaceman!" -Donna Noble, best Companion to the best Doctor ☺☺☺
So beautiful! At first I wasn't so sure about the pink, but afterwards when it was all said in done it really is so beautiful and I loved how you mixed the different shades of pink, it really made it that much more beautiful! Thanks for sharing your beautiful hair with us, I truly enjoyed watching...!
I am in love with watching you! It's very informative and you have some SERIOUS skills. Plus, that pink is what I love the most. It's just beautiful on you!
And naturally, this style is possible to make with hair in a more natural color. I really didn't know how to curl synthetic hair, so I learnt something I wondered about today.
The crown braid gave me an excellent idea. If you braid hair long enough you could pin it around the head to fill out those Edwardian Gibson Girl hairstyles.
Extraordinario. Maravilloso ver la reproducción paso a paso de peinados que hemos visto tantas veces en fotos, películas, etc. Admirable trabajo. Gracias
Love this video! I am dressing up as a Steampunk Victorian Woman of the Night this year for Halloween and I needed a gorgeous hairstyle! I could NOT find one I liked until I saw your video... I was going to do a wig but I think your tutorial has made me change my mind and I am going to seek out "synthetic braiding hair in whatever colour I like, thank you very much!" (Blue) 💙 Thank you for the lovely video with your beautiful self, the easy-to-follow tutorial, and the history as well!
WOW! You are amazing. You seems like such an interesting person. Thank you for sharing you magic skills and time traveling tricks with us. Delighted to have found you.
Fabulous! Thank you so much for your videos-- they are so informative and entertaining. One takeaway is that people of yesteryear spent a lot more time on their appearance than I do -- I only have time to pull my hair back in a sloppy bun and call it done!! 😃
Wow, Janet, that's incredible. What a super cool video, expertly done! Thanks for sharing. I'm going to try it and it gave me great ideas. You're a good teacher and pretty lady:)
In Columbia, MO we have a yearly film festival called True/False, part of the volunteers are called Queens that dress up and entertain all the visitors. Most of these Queens dress exactly like you have in this video! Several of them have hairstyles like this too and I always wanted to know how in the heck they did this, thanks to your video I know now!!! The theme for the Queens is anything from Steampunk to Alice in Wonderland, I just loved this video! Thanks for sharing this!!!
What a beautiful woman!! I have a friend, who dyes her hair the same vibrant magenta, and I love it! Being unique and authentically yourself, is a very attractive and inspiring trait! Never give that up! ♥ I wish, I could find artificial hair, which matched my own henna dyed tresses. I'd love to make curled hair pieces like this, but won't risk damaging my long hair with a curling iron. However, while there's red artificial hair out there, it never matches my specific henna hue. And I don't think, synthetic hair could be dyed with henna, either. Would be so cool, to still have services around nowadays, where you can send in a lock of your own hair, for them to match up the perfect color!
I remember doing styles like this as a child when I had hair down to my mid back or longer... and we did these styles (and fancier) with my natural hair. But these days I keep my hair very much of a short modern style, so for some of my steampunk it would be nice to sport a longer coiffure again. I will have to research more hair piece styles, I have used them in styles for my niece and even for myself for adding longer braids in the past, but did not think to just make hair pieces I could incorporate without use of a wig! (with as much research as I've done I should have)
The amount of sass when you mentioned using synthetic hair in whatever color you like had me giggling something fierce. 😂
Likewise!
Me too haha 😂

Petition for Janet Stephens to be the next Doctor Who
HIGH PRAISE INDEED!!!! Thanks! J
YES
Ana Lorena Agreed, or maybe Missy!
A perfect choice!
But Dr Who should be British - surely!
I feel like an idiot for thinking they did all that with their natural hair! 😂 That is a beautiful style!
Empress Sissi herself couldn't even do themore complicated fashions without help...
It would have been natural hair, just not their own.
If they would have had the synthetic hair options we have now, they probably would have had even crazier hair styles!
Me too. And all the torture I've put my poor hair through😱
sissi have a natural hair , along your body see the pictures in google
I love the prim and proper voice with the sass when talking about the false hair.
This tutorial is, as all of your videos, very helpful and may I say that you look absolutely fabulous! 💜
Thilda's Beinhaus Thilda, good to see you here!
Oh hi there! :D 😺
Aahhh!!! 2 youtubers I follow. THIS made my day!!! ⚰🕸🐱
Same here , i had no idea... but i was not supprised. This was cool!

Hair, voice, wallpaper, just the whole thing is fabulous

I just love the contrast between the hairstyle and the hair color!
I’m a hairstylist and thoroughly enjoy period styling. I am now binge watching your channel.
I absolutely love how vibrant your hair colour is!! This was such a good video, I couldn't stop giggling at all the sass :)
Wow! Even your backgrounds are creative! I love your style!
You look so beautiful with this hairstyle and colour! It's good to see you back on UA-cam also, thank you for uploading a stunning new video.
As a history major and a braiding enthusiast this is the perfect channel for me! The way you speak while listing the items used and the instructions very much reminds me of John Maclean in his makeup videos. Love it!
That shade of pink looks really nice on you. I love your tutorials & all the tidbits of history!
That colour is slaying me!!!
I love the way you show all of the steps.
Hello Sharon.
How are you?

idk why, but the way you tie knots is so satisfying! lol
This was so fun! And that hair color is striking!

I love everything about this. The historical information, detailed tutorial, pink ombre hair! All of it.
Please tell me you went out in this! If only to buy groceries.
Glad to see you back! This style is amazing.
I have such a strong desire to go out and buy a ton of hair in every color.
Wow! Your tutorials are always so good and informative! Thank you so much!

Endlessly amusing and much informative, I shall now proceed to look at the rest of this channel for this was a joy to watch.
Wow just discovered your channel and you need to post way more! Your videos are so educational and you give such a good explanation of everything. I wish there were more steampunk and historical inspired styles on UA-cam
I always get excited when I see a new video from you! They're also so wonderfully informative and interesting to watch!
When proper english is so rare that you find it a delight and music to the ears...🎶
Do you plan to do more Roman styles too? I'd love to see someone badass, like Cornelia Africana or Porcia Catonis.
I had to rewatch this again and honestly I feel like this may be the best tutorial EVER on UA-cam :)
So...are you sure you're not a Time Lord? You're just awesome!
I'm so glad I found this channel. I love playing with hair myself and your videos are fantastic. 💖
Oh, I'm so glad you're still making videos! Unbelievably creative and well-researched. You are a multi-talented renaissance woman!
I was JUST watching the Sisi movies the other night and wondering how her hair was done. Thank you so much for the tutorial. You're always so informative!
I love everything about this video...great character with lots of sass and I absolutely love the color.
I love your videos, I could just listen to you talk all day!
Steampunk is my favorite style for everything. Found your video while looking up hair styles from Victorian times.
Great walk-through and brief history! I really enjoyed the old cartoons over accentuating the styles.
I wish it was possible to "love it" with a heart button. But I do love this, absolutely. And I am inspired for Halloween. Holy moly I knew there was a reason to subscribe to you. Her voice is like Christine Baranski as a stylist+historian! These videos are delightful. Thank you for sharing with these.
This tutorial is cracking me up!!! You are so diligent to the historicity of hairstyles and a stickler for accuracy, so it's fun to see you throw it all to the wind and have fun!!
Tara P historicity?! Taraisity you are funicity ! 🤪😝
All of these historic-hair videos are fascinating! 😲 But since I lack braiding skill (and patience), I will forever rock a ponytail
I LOVE THIS! Your hair color is amazing!
All of her videos keep giving me 🔓 unlocked memories 🔓
Beautiful work Miss Janet! I could watch your videos all day. Though I admit that I kept expecting you to call out "Oi! Watch it, Spaceman!" -Donna Noble, best Companion to the best Doctor ☺☺☺

Would never have imagined that you look like this in ‘real life’!
What a lovely hairdo ! :D You look amazing.
Every moment of this video was magnificent!

I just found your channel and I love your work! It's a shame you don't upload much anymore
Fabulous! Thank you so much for your videos-- they are so informative and entertaining. One takeaway is that people of yesteryear spent a lot more time on their appearance than I do -- I only have time to pull my hair back in a sloppy bun and call it done!! 😃
Pink hair? This Lady looks stunning and such a lovely voice and enunciation.
I'm blown away. Such talent
I kept thinking “Why does this music sound so familiar?!” It’s because it was a Sinterklaas song 😂. The Dutch predecessor to Santa Claus.
Very interesting, thank you for this tutorial. And good grief Charlie Brown, I'm glad that I don't have to go to all of this trouble every morning.
Wow, Janet, that's incredible. What a super cool video, expertly done! Thanks for sharing. I'm going to try it and it gave me great ideas. You're a good teacher and pretty lady:)
Hello Leah.

Well I certainly do like the color pink or blue from which you choose you look absolutely marvelous

More Victorian/Civil War era and Edwardian Styles, please!!! :-)
Loving the Steampunk effect!
Hello Colleen.
How are you?
I swear, I felt like I was staring into the future at my future self. Time travel?!
I frigging love your videos.

Seriously the most badass woman! I love her already 💌
i love the tude with the color. its so great :D
This is so well done! I wish I had long hair to do this!
Fabulous! I will have to try this with a straight braid in back. Sadly I an French braid challenged.
Hello Wanda.
How are you Wanda?
Oh wow!! 😍😍😍 i wish i would look and move as you do at 80!!! So elegant with an edge!! 😊😊😊
This is just a wonderful video. I may have to give this style a try some day.
Simply marvelous!
Bless the Elders. What would we do without them?

Love love love! This made my day.
