@@rollowarlin8450 oh wow, I never heard the 102, but I guess if I had one I would still use the heck out of it anyway, because in the mix no one will really know what you used anyway!
Hey, Thanks for the comment buddy. So in your opinion, it is just a modern voiced, transformerless microphone made by Neumann. In my opinion Neumann found a way to make a cheaper production model of one of their best selling microphones by using one capsule rather than two, cut back on the electronics used while almost maintaining "that Neumann Sound" This is the reason I call it a U87 clone, because if Neumann marketed the TLM103 as a clone, then no one would even want to buy a U87 anymore. And yes they sound different to each other, and so do vintage U87's, they all sound different from each other. I could have said all these things in my video, but it would make the video even longer my friend.
@Plautus egal I hope you don't think that I am trying to pick a fight with you on this topic, because I am not. I am just trying to give home recording artist good sounding options if they cannot afford the U87. But if a person can afford to buy a U87, I am not trying to discourage them in any way. I own a TLM103 its my workhorse, but I will buy a U87 when I can. But there is not a massive difference in the sound of the mics, here is a side by side I did ua-cam.com/video/uCscezR24Vc/v-deo.html
@Plautus egal but if i drop the gain on TLM there is a drastic change, it seems very gain dependant. But it all comes down to application in my opinion, as I said, what are you recording and what technique are you going to use. But as a self recording artist, there comes a point where you just need to "capture " your idea and not want to think about technique otherwise the moment is gone. This is my problem, Affordability and just get the job done. And I dont know if you also face this problem as an artist?
@@badmiddens hey thanks for your comment, I don’t believe in using clones and would rather buy the original mic, but sometimes a musician may not be able to afford one, myself included. So the video is just about giving others the opportunity to get something that sounds close enough to build a certain amount of confidence in performance, this is not for the studio buff who is trying to replicate frequency responses if you understand where my opinion lies.
I just got a TLM 102 for a craaaazy deal. The 103 is next. I only buy stuff when I can get a good deal. It’s worth the wait. Thanks for the video was curious about clones I’ll probably just wait to get the dough for the real deal especially with the resale value always being the same or higher.
Hey thanks for the comment Mike, after I did this video, I got my hands on a U87 and did a couple TLM vs U87 and even tho they are super close, I would still like to get a U87 for the polar patterns now.. lol Good luck with your new gear, have fun and make music!
I have the Behringer B2 which only costs 90€ new and 50€ used in Germany, has 3 different polar patterns and comes with an aluminium case, a spider, and a windscreen included, and I really like the sound of it. However it has a pretty high noisefloor so i always use it with the free reaplugs reafir vst in substractive mode to cleanup the signal.
Welcome to the club my friend! Every producer and recording tech has had to overcome some technical problem to get the job done over the years. Do whatever you have to do to make your gear sound the way you want it, make yourself happy first, its your art, break every rule there is in recording, if you love what you do, just do it!
TLM 103 for me - and I’ve used both extensively, is a much more brittle and difficult microphone. The lack of transformer makes it thin and cold to my ears. I think if you listen to direct comparisons it’s pretty obvious. Having said that, beginner engineers tend to prefer brighter mics of which the TLM is surely one. However, it’s not a pleasing brightness when compared to a u87 with a hf boost.
Thank you for your comment Junior, and I agree that it can be a difficult mic to work with at times, at that point a external pre amp becomes your best friend. Once you can control the gain coming in, this mic is a different beast. And yes the U87Ai is a beautiful microphone. Best regards from the Caribbean to The Future President Of Zimbabwe!
Zimba's voters put the right Jr. VP in office ! Not having a tube OR a transformer in your mic can spell real trouble unless you can thicken up the sound, when needed, with a great preamp. TLM's do cut thru a congested mix better but that's about it.
@@rollowarlin8450 I'd love to hear a TLM 103 and a U87 both going into something like the WA-MPX preamp, or the Retro OP6. I wonder how much difference the transformer would make then. Me thinks not so much. Nice chatting.
@@TieDyeKitty "Once you can control the gain coming in, this mic is a different beast." Controlling gain is what EVERY mic user needs to do with every mic in order to sound it's best. Are you new to this??
I look at certain pieces of equipment that have a track record as investments, I can buy them, use them and if in a financial jam, I can then sell them for almost the same price as when new. Other gear seems to be a fad for awhile, then they are not, at that point no one wants them and they become trash. So I never regret buying the Neumann. lol
At2020 3yrs ago should I go tlm103 ?I have a soft spoken male voice .should I go with a warmer sounding mic or a bright mic.I’m 19 if that helps with your choice option for me.
Hey Yssn Films, thanks for the question, there is nothing wrong with using an AT2020, if that is all you have, I can say it is a great mic. If you have the extra money and would like to buy another mic, then buy the TLM103. At one time I had 8 different microphones. lol
Hey Melody, thanks for the comment, I know many people on UA-cam wont agree with me, but the thing is, all companies know that the only way to grow their customer base and increase profits, is to update their best selling product to have everyone run after it like Iphone and GoPro. OR>>> Hike up the price on your best seller "U87" and then make a cheaper budget version. The whole TLM line was born! It was brilliant on the part of Neumann!
Thank you for the video, saw a clone for sale on ebay for the neuman u87, and I was curious how the stats compare and if it's better then continuing to trying to snipe one on ebay.
Hey thanks for your question, in my humble opinion, the sound of a microphone is a matter of taste, some people love a U87 and some people hate it. So my best advice is to rent one for a day if that is available in your country, and get a couple clones as well just try them out. You may honestly end up loving a clone for some strange reason on your voice my friend, I have seen that happen a few time. lol And people on ebay now seem to want near to new prices, so its not really worth it anymore for most gear.
It all depends what studio they are in. If they are on the road and they only have access to a certain studio they will use whatever they got. Beyoncé usually records on a 251
Thanks for that info Saint Clarity, I myself don’t only record on a TLM103, I also record on 6 other microphones in my home studio. But these artists can and have the power and influence to tell the recording engineer that they never want to see that mic around them when they are in studio. Lol
Hey sorry about that, I have to buy and import every mic into my country first. Stores here don’t stock 99% of what is available in most places. And that means we pay double the US sale price on everything also, I cannot afford to keep doing reviews. Lol
My boys use the TLM 103 for Rapp, Hipp hopp,… vocals (after testing a few mics in a recording studio) - they loved and bought it. Never harsh, sibilant,… neither in their young nore in my older ears. Still their favorite mic.
An 11 month overdue reply to your comment, I am sorry for taking this long, but life has gotten in the way. I am happy that you got both mics and I am sure you put them side by side as I did in a couple video, and the subtle difference may have shocked you, bottom line is they are both great mics!
Hi, that is a hard question to answer, you have to ask yourself what is more important, the performance or the gear? Because i have done many side by side comparisons on the Neaumann TLM103 as a cheaper alternative to the U87 as "a clone" and many people on UA-cam have shot that down. It comes down to what you like, what works for you and what you can afford, they all will get the job done, but when you find the perfect mic for your voice, you will have less work to do in the mix. Hope this helps.
Glad it was helpful! you should also check out this video ua-cam.com/video/uCscezR24Vc/v-deo.html Even tho I already own the TLM103, I would not ever mind getting a U87 any chance I get, every little advantage, is still an advantage.
Thank you my Caribbean brother! a great microphone gives me goosebumps lol I see that you use a Zoom H1N at times in your videos, those things are amazing!
Brilliant! I have a TLM 103 and never really liked it until I brought my Warm Audio WA73. I did several A/Bs to compare the mics that I have and the TLM 103 faired the absolute best for my taste. The one thing you said that struck me was how this microphone retains it's value. It's true. I purchased mine 20 years ago and the price point is still the same. " Big Up" from the Chicago massive!
Because it is transformer-less, it will have sibilance issues depending on the mic preamp and gain settings. If you want a good clone, buy the Mic-Parts DIY kit. It is the closest in my ears.
!00% agree with GAIN setting because that is the most important thing, the problem most bedroom producers encounter is the average Audio Interface does not have a "Gain" knob, but more of an input knob. But an external mic pre amp in most cases have a Gain and Output knob, this way as you know you can raise the output volume on a channel to get your meters moving without pushing Gain! That was how I first started using the 103, it was only after I downsized my studio, did I run into sibilance issues with the 103, because I could not adjust really adjust gain on my interface. So an external pre amp is a game changer, so it would probably be the first thing I buy in order to start recording music again!
@@TieDyeKitty Yes indeed !! Me too, I have down sized as well and have gone down the rabbit hole of home studio recording. It seems to me that today's "cheap" interfaces can't drive the microphones properly and they make the mics sound dead. No matter how hard you push the gain and treble, they sound horrific. Although I can afford to get a u87, a Calrec RQP 3200, a DBX 520 and a Focusrite Red2 EQ, I can't justify the investment for making just "demos" LOL. I am trying to get as close as I to that sound without the price... The 103 is a great mic for the money. That and a ISA one should do the trick. A lot of guys are making it work with cheaper preamps. Like the Symetrix 528, I hear that they are really good and have a vintage but transparent sound. The Golden Age Project PRE-73 Single-Channel Premier Microphone Preamp is another one, has a really good transformer. I will definitely buy a couple and test them...
Don't mean to be a troll, but dont want people to get missinformed either 103 is not a U87 at all, and they do sound different, first it doesn't have a transformer, neither has negative feedback in the circuit design to deemphasize or compensate for the huge, pronounced high end bump a capsule with k67 backplates naturally has. This is the main factors to atrribute for the differences in their sound. Its why the 103 mic, no offense to you and your property, but doesn't sound as refined and smooth as a U87, but rather somewhat harsh and very bright. Anyway the reason why its one of the best sellers is not because its that good, its rather good marketing, making you believe you are getting a mic that sounds like a u87 in a more affordable package ( but still overpriced for what it really is)...if what you want is a very bright mic, there are much cheaper options than that.
Hey Bernardo, sorry to offend you, and yes you have the right to stand up for what you believe to be true, but in the context of what I am trying to prove I also have the right to prove my case. So on my channel I have done many comparisons of the U87 vs the TLM103 so that other self recording artist can actually hear the difference for themselves, because the 2 mics are very very close in sound, and the reason I do this, is so that another artists may not try to break their bank account trying to achieve the U87 when they can simply wait till they can afford to get one. They can use the TLM103 and be just fine. ua-cam.com/video/uCscezR24Vc/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/KsF3HbkIXls/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/xgOJHiELB7g/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/klwbwLCtRaU/v-deo.html I hope you understand, stay safe.
@@NoLefTurnUnStoned. I just got my hands on a Advanced Audio CM87 but have not had the time to test it against my TLM or U87 yet, have you tested this Canadian clone?
Having owned both a vintage U87 and a TLM103. They’re both great mics! Neumann hasn’t confirmed this, but the earlier TLM103 was slightly different than the current ones, a hair darker. I had one from early 2000, and that one was never ever harsh like people say on the forums.
Mine was old, so maybe that is why I never had the sort of complaints about it as others do about the TLM 103, thanks for sharing that unofficial info.lol I really like how they both perform, subtle differences in each can really bring out the quality of a recording.
I have learned over time that saving money on goods that are commonplace in the market is a wise decision. Conversely, trying to save money on goods that are specialized, especially ones I LOVE relating to music, is NEVER worth it. I will certainly save up to buy the Neumann TLM103 as opposed to any clones I might run into. Thanks for posting.
This is exactly the sort of thing I love to hear, I got the TLM103 a few years ago and love it, but yet online I see so many people bash it, and they speak of the U87 like it is some sort of GOD. But in my last few videos I put both mics against each other, and my take away is that the TLM can stand up against the U87 with no problem in cardioid mode. But the U87 is still a mic that I would like to get, because it is just a little smoother than the TLM. So GO FOR IT! never look back! A Neumann will always have resale value unlike a cone anyway. Thanks for your comment randydavisman.
Jake Thanks for taking the time to comment, I have done some other video where I compare them side by side, and there are those that still say the TLM is rubbish. lol
The TLM103 is NOT a clone of the U87. The TLM 103 should not be compared to a U87. It has the same capsule, sure, but it is not for the same use. I own a TLM103 and I love using it. I want a U87 because of the different polar patterns and some slightly better low mids. I enjoy my TLM 103 and most other people will as well, but to say that the TLM103 is a clone of the U87 is why it gets all the "crap" that it gets.
Hey Bardic, I have been working hard to make other artist accept and love the TLM103 for what it is and stop giving it a hard time, as I primarily use one myself. And yes the mic is always compared to a U87 and expected to perform just like a U87 and does not quite reach that standard, so from one TLM103 user to another I salute you for standing up for it! If you have time, check out this blind test I did ua-cam.com/video/uCscezR24Vc/v-deo.html Thank You Bardic Brent!
@@TieDyeKittyU87 and TLM 103 - the main differences are twofold: the heart of the mic - the capsule - the K103 capsule is inspired from the K67/K87 drilling pattern, yes, BUT (and this makes a huge difference) - it is not a dual capsule, so the backplate has essentially nothing behind it, whereas the U87 family of mics (K67/K87 capsules) have dual backplates and capsules, which changes the response and character of the acoustics, even in cardioid alone. The other big difference is the circuit. The U87 mics use a transformer-coupled circuit, which adds character with second-order harmonics, imparted by the transformer in the circuit. The transformer also creates a bit more noise. Also, the K67/K87 capsules do have a rather bright presence boost, which is then attenuated in the U87 circuit design (EQ capacitor inbuilt), whereas the TLM 103 has its unique capsule presence untamed, with no frequency attenuation and no 2nd order (musical) harmonics to be imparted by a transformer.. All that being said, the 103 is a nice mic and standard for VO/VA/rap, broadcast. If someone doesn’t know how to make it, (the 103), sound good, it stands to reason that they know little to nothing about off-axis response and the art of EQ’Ing at the source. :)
That ending summery was beautify said, perfection! Yes knowing how to eq your mic without touching a plugin or off axis response to control artifacts you don't want are things we should all learn first. Thank you for this comment Circles and Sounds.
Below 19 dba self noise you can't hear it. Add solid state or tube pre u might. U can tube before after or not at all. Need tubes Studio channel, Art need solid state use your interface, it's clean run your tube mic through it.
I can tell the difference in speakers I can tell the difference in microphones but I'm still having difficulty actually hearing the differences between capacity and some audio crossover parts and of course some amplifiers. what I can tell you? there are some things that are just worth the price and you know what what you get in return is something that is quite honestly one of the best investments you can make. I have a special joy for hearing other people's voices and you know what when they are absolutely perfect when everything is just wonderful when just a little nuances of their voice come through I get all giddy. use quality gear all the way through out your chain all the way to your recorder and I'm telling you you're going to be in heaven. with gear like this you don't want to skimp on what you're recording on or your analog-to-digital converter and if you really want to be brave go straight to analog. I'm not saying there isn't some very good mics out there in the $600 price range or even in the sub hundred dollar price range what I'm telling you is there's something very special about this microphone maybe it's just the way it makes you feel I don't know but it's amazing
All great points, valid in every way, but I will let you in on a secret, right now I am doing a u87 vs Tlm103 review, it’s the first one I have ever done on my channel, and all I can say is Wow the both mics are so so close, I am blown away. I expected it, but wow, so it really comes down to Application and what you intend to record, if you don’t need polar patters then you don’t need a u87 in my humble opinion at all. And thanks you for a great comment!
I've used it many times and I can say with certainty that the TLM 103 is definitely NOT like a U87. It's too bright and crispy. The lows sound anemic and it is extremely susceptible to plosives. Its lack of a transformer makes it very detailed but in combination with the presence peak just mean it's really good at accentuating mouth noise. There's cheaper microphones (not Neumann) that sound better. It's ok on some sources but not most voices.
Oh wow, I am glad you had the opportunity to test different microphones and know what to look out for. I myself have done comparisons between the two mics on this UA-cam channel to help self recording artists draw their own conclusion before they spend their money. So thank you MidnightMilk for contributing to this post, and your points are still valid without a doubt, the 103 does behave differently and the person using it must know how to use it in every application for best results.
@@jonathanarnold2225 There are many microphones that I prefer over the TLM 103. Since I don’t really like the microphone it’s kind of a low bar. I’m not saying that I dislike ALL Neumann microphones. Not at all. Their vintage U87, U67, U47 and the rarer models sound amazing! They’ve reissued the U67 and it is very good. I’m not as into the U87 Ai but it is still an excellent microphone. As for U87 alternatives or Neumann alternatives in general: Stam SA 87 is a very excellent alternative to a vintage U87. Beesneez makes a very convincing U67. If you’re looking for something transformerless, the Vanguard V4 is an excellent microphone Roswell has a few excellent alternatives. Neumann may have minted the gold standard decades ago with their vintage tech but there’s been an explosion of microphone manufacturers recently that are making excellent gear at a fraction of the cost. If you’re running a professional recording studio then you should probably still have a real U87 just because certain clients expect it and will go somewhere else if you don’t have it. If you’re upping your home studio, the need to have one becomes a personal preference. But really it’s almost an ego thing at this point with so many excellent alternatives available. The exception would be a professional voice actor that needs to match studio recordings in their home and are working every day. For example the announcer voice for a TV network. They have to be available every day. They are paid extremely well and can easily justify the expense. Though I bet if they used a non Neumann alternative no one would would complain if they didn’t know.
@@jonathanarnold2225 I wish! Stam and Dachman seem to have nailed the U87 but the U67, especially a vintage U67, has some magic that is very difficult to replicate. The Beesneez BU67 is the best U67 wannabe I know of. Right now it's going for $1422.78 USD. Definitely above $1000 but still only a quarter of what a U67 reissue runs. Warm Audio has a sub $1000 WA67 that isn't a "bad" microphone but it isn't as spot on as the Beesneez. Sometimes used WA67s pop up for under $500. Where most manufactures seem to fail with a U67 clone is in the high frequency response. Many attenuate the high end to keep it from sounding "hyped" but often overdo it leaving the mic sounding dull. A U67 has a beautiful top end that is smooth, detailed and definitely not hyped but still present. Stam also has a U67 clone that I haven't heard but if they put the same attention to detail they put into the SA87 then I have some hope it will be good. Still over $1000 though. My advice is: Unless you absolutely NEED it right now, hold off until you can save up for the BU67.
Bro I’m struggling to pick your accent. You sound Jamaican mixed with Welsh mixed with East Indian. Whatever it is it’s a beautiful accent and I love listening to you. Great video also.

i get what you say but the tlm 103 sounds nothing like a u87. The u87 sounds much fuller, richer and warmer. You showed some artists like beyonce and billie eilish using the 103. Sure they did, but beyonce is definetely using a telefunken 251 or sony c800g, same as billie eilish now. T-Pain also used the Sony C800g. There is nothing wrong with the 103 but the U87 is far superior. I know many many people who are dissapointed of this mic cause it sounds too harsh. SO much more artists using the U87, like Dababy, Wiz Khalifa, Kid Laroi, Ariana Grande in her home studio and the list goes on because the u87 never dissapoints! Its a mic which fits on all voices. I know what you mean cause the tlm grabs the character of the u87, but it doesnt come close enough. You get what you pay for and an u87 is a lifetime investment. You even can make great records in 50 Years with this mic. Just my point.
You are right in many ways Teymusic, and thanks for a great point of view, but I really want to shed some light on the fact that, if you cant afford a U87 a TLM103 can pull its weight also. You can upgrade from a TLM if every you feel the need, I have other videos on my channel where I put the mics head to head to prove my case. So yes the U87 sounds better, but how much better..5% better, 50% better or 100% better? I live in a country where a U87 cost $6400USD but the ave monthly salary is $615USD so even tho I would love to buy one, A TLM gets the job done also, and I know there are other countries around the world where artist have even greater hurdles to overcome.
@@TieDyeKitty yeah you’re so right! I didn’t meant this in a bad way, thanks for understanding my point of view. I also understand yours. :) But Beyoncé and all the other they def record on high budget mics we can’t afford right now. But we will one day 🔥 keep working!
Ah yes and McDonald's has sold millions of Big Macs so its all about supply and demand, and many artist demand what they think is the best microphone on the planet, thats why the U87 and all the clones of it sell. Even tho there are many other great mics on the market, many manufacturers keep on making clones of this mic.
Oh u got a band and money Allen and heath digital mixer runs at 96khz don't need that much resolution want it phat and funky on a budget Presonus studio live 316 or series 3 32sc
The thing that is even more funny, is the vintage U87s sound so different from the modern one, and even no two modern units sound the same, they are like snow flakes under the microscope. lol
Hey Saint Clarity, that is a great point, most neaumann clones are just a matter of opinion by the manufacture of the mic, so if they say its a clone, it becomes a clone.
Hey Selwyn, you are 100% right ! Hoping the video helped, if not and you need a couple more to help you decide or not. I got you covered also. Just a few of TLM vs U87.
Hi Ron, thanks for you valid opinion, much care should be taken when using the TLM or any mic for that matter when recording, some mics are more vulnerable to things like plosives and sibilance. And that is also made mention that every little thing matters, even if you change one electronic value or wire, the microphone will change. But if you must buy a clone.....these are some of the best in my opinion. But it is still my opinion if you are on a budget.
Thanks for your input, all clones still have their own sound because they are not an Original Neumann, but lets take that one step further by saying that no two mics will sound exactly the same, even if they are the same brand and model. In my opinion, which is all this is and you are free to see my point or not. One of the first Neumanns had a tube, then came a transformer version, then came a transformerless all based upon the same popular capsule. Seems like a way to make the same "Sound" more affordable at different price points, but Neumann will never say it, because then people will not buy the more expensive model.
Hey thanks Clueless Kit! I am from the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago, I show a little of it in this vlog style video I just did if you care to know more. ua-cam.com/video/fLQsdB5e21A/v-deo.html Thanks for the cool comment, now go write some awesome music !
So sorry that my video angered you Tutorial, my focus was to try and help other artists find great microphones to use that are clones of the U87 so that they wont break their pockets, so Sorry once again, I stand corrected. Thanks for letting me know my mistake.
@@tutorial4779 thanks bud, I may have gotten mixed up where I read somewhere that they implemented the transistor version as a way to reduce the price of the tube version, hence the both mic being essentially the same, yes obviously once you change components you change the “sound” What are your thoughts?
@@TieDyeKitty my thoughts are that the characteristics in sound are completely different. The u87 is smooth and elegant. The u47 has less high end than a u87 and it also has not the elegance in the sound. It has another sound to it.
I hope one time china clone u87 original 100% next month. Original because the branding and technology. Still dont have pure gold or crystal in original mic🤣. But original price very expensive because the branding. hope china copy 100% use medium spec electronic component and just sell for hundred price. i will buy it..😍
So true, sorry I threw that in because the Neumann U 87 was basically a clone of the The Neumann U 47 that was manufactured without the tube to keep cost down and make the mic more affordable, then the TLM 103 came along to keep cost down once again to make the great "Neumann Sound" more available to the home studio, so its now a copy of the U 47. Lets see what Neumann does in a few more years, it is hard to re invent yourself when you are already at the top. lol Thanks for the comment The Lion!
@@TieDyeKitty currently with a Sennheiser Mk4. Really debating....should I just get a pre-amp to add on or what would you advice? Might be looking to change for a clearer present mic. Bless from Kenya
@@kennethgithinji5631 preamps are great! But it is just another level of try out to see what you like, which one fits your taste. So most of the time I use the mic pre amps on small inexpensive mixing boards to be able to manipulate my gain and volume till I get what I want, so it becomes more of a channel strip than just a pre amp.
Sorry bro… It’s nothing like a clone. A clone would sound extremely similar. They don’t. The tlm 103 has a totally different sound to the U87. I’m a professional voice over artist. I have both mics.
@@TieDyeKitty The Gototoolz gtz 87 is pretty close, just a tiny bit more sibilant. But $3000 cheaper! The Warm87 is also a good “clone” mic for those on a smaller budget. It’s gorgeous for singing, and they still make them for about $250.00 Absolute bargain!
which one in your opinion would be the best all round mic for a self recording artist, for vocals, percussion and other instruments? The Shure SM57 of those two Mojaves you listed above? I will take note to try and review one day soon, thanks Ron!
Thanks for your opinion, and yes a Clone is normally referred to an organic process, so you are absolutely right. But this video was made to help indie artist escape from feeling the need to buy a U87 in order to get some great sounding tracks, and end up buying some "Clone" that has no resale value when they try to eventually upgrade. Sorry for wasting your time clicking on the video, but I have a few other video with side by side test to prove my point.
So many people attack my opinion as misleading, its ok it is your opinion and I respect it. My problem lies in the fact that I own a 103 and I borrowed a friends U87 and I tested them side by side of which I have a couple on my channel. After those test, I made this video to let other Artist know that there are many options if you cannot afford a U87, and another Neumann may very well be a great option that sounds very close to a U87. If you listen to the raw audio with great headphones, you can only hear a little more bottom end and a touch smoother highs. But if the song is mixed with either microphone, you could not tell the difference, or lack of perceived quality.
this is the most misleading video, but Inshoolve guessed by the way that monitor is standing. 103 is NOT a clone but another class of neumann. there are tons of u87 clones ranging from $10 to $1000.. this is the dumbest video by far
Thanks for sharing your opinion, and sorry if this video upset every molecule in your body, but the fact that you can get the similar sound of a U87 by simply buying a cheaper "Neumann" is my humble opinion. Neumann will never market a 103 to give the impression of that, because that could mean a drop in sales for their best selling microphone. Most indie artist are recording in their bedrooms and may not be able to afford a U87 to start with.
@@TieDyeKitty I have both and when people say clones, they don’t mean that. maybe in your country. Imagine saying a Toyota Corolla is a clone of a Toyota Camry?? Most countries dot speak your lingo bro. there’s a big difference with your wording which is misleading and it’s NOT an opinion. That’s how people in the music industry see it. We always talk about clones and know people personally who build many u87 clones as hobbies
@@Idonttakethisseriously please understand that I am no way angry at your comment, nor am I upset. But in my opinion, once again this is my opinion, the whole reason that someone will buy a clone is the affordability vs an original, and since you have both you already know that the sound between the mics is very very close, the 103 "Sounds Like A Clone" because its not perfect, but very close. And I would like other self recording artist to have a level of confidence it they choose the 103 until they can afford a U87. I have done a few back videos and was shocked at the results.

@@rollowarlin8450 oh wow, I never heard the 102, but I guess if I had one I would still use the heck out of it anyway, because in the mix no one will really know what you used anyway!
TLM103 is not a clone, it’s a modern voiced microphone that is transformerless. It’s a great mic, but it’s not a clone. Warm audio is a clone.
Hey, Thanks for the comment buddy. So in your opinion, it is just a modern voiced, transformerless microphone made by Neumann.
In my opinion Neumann found a way to make a cheaper production model of one of their best selling microphones by using one capsule rather than two, cut back on the electronics used while almost maintaining "that Neumann Sound"
This is the reason I call it a U87 clone, because if Neumann marketed the TLM103 as a clone, then no one would even want to buy a U87 anymore.
But there is not a massive difference in the sound of the mics, here is a side by side I did
ua-cam.com/video/uCscezR24Vc/v-deo.html
@Plautus egal but if i drop the gain on TLM there is a drastic change, it seems very gain dependant.
But it all comes down to application in my opinion, as I said, what are you recording and what technique are you going to use.
But as a self recording artist, there comes a point where you just need to "capture " your idea and not want to think about technique otherwise the moment is gone.
This is my problem, Affordability and just get the job done.
And I dont know if you also face this problem as an artist?
@@TieDyeKitty you can push back all you want, but he's right. That is not what clone means.
Hey thanks for the comment Mike, after I did this video, I got my hands on a U87 and did a couple TLM vs U87 and even tho they are super close, I would still like to get a U87 for the polar patterns now.. lol
Good luck with your new gear, have fun and make music!
Where did you get it from
I came across a video on UA-cam showing a rich rappers house where he records. He rehearsed with a U87, but records with the Mojave MA300.
I have the Behringer B2 which only costs 90€ new and 50€ used in Germany,
has 3 different polar patterns and comes with an aluminium case, a spider, and a windscreen included,
and I really like the sound of it.
@@TieDyeKitty "Once you can control the gain coming in, this mic is a different beast."
Controlling gain is what EVERY mic user needs to do with every mic in order to sound it's best. Are you new to this??
So if you had to buy it all over again , would you still get the TLM 103 or the Mojave MÁ 201 FEt?
I look at certain pieces of equipment that have a track record as investments, I can buy them, use them and if in a financial jam, I can then sell them for almost the same price as when new.
Other gear seems to be a fad for awhile, then they are not, at that point no one wants them and they become trash.
So I never regret buying the Neumann. lol

The first time I heard that "Neumann makes a clone of one of their own mics"! Beautiful!!
Hey Melody, thanks for the comment, I know many people on UA-cam wont agree with me, but the thing is, all companies know that the only way to grow their customer base and increase profits, is to update their best selling product to have everyone run after it like Iphone and GoPro.

You may honestly end up loving a clone for some strange reason on your voice my friend, I have seen that happen a few time. lol
And people on ebay now seem to want near to new prices, so its not really worth it anymore for most gear.
Lol
Hi my bro...what about the TLM 107 VS TLM 103?? please...thank you by advance..
Hey sorry about that, I have to buy and import every mic into my country first.

Thanks for reaching out to ask me to do the review anyway, that’s cool of you .

How are they
There are GTZ U 87, GTZ U 87+ and two more clones. Which clone is near to naumann U87.

The one thing you said that struck me was how this microphone retains it's value. It's true. I purchased mine 20 years ago and the price point is still the same. " Big Up" from the Chicago massive!
Good stuff! thanks Muziq, I am glad to help in what ever way I can.

Bought mine used for $500 back in 2003. Still love it!
@@TieDyeKitty For sure !!
Don't mean to be a troll, but dont want people to get missinformed either
103 is not a U87 at all, and they do sound different, first it doesn't have a transformer, neither has negative feedback in the circuit design to deemphasize or compensate for the huge, pronounced high end bump a capsule with k67 backplates naturally has.

Thanks buddy, sorry for the late reply, I am only now seeing this.
Having owned both a vintage U87 and a TLM103. They’re both great mics! Neumann hasn’t confirmed this, but the earlier TLM103 was slightly different than the current ones, a hair darker. I had one from early 2000, and that one was never ever harsh like people say on the forums.
Mine was old, so maybe that is why I never had the sort of complaints about it as others do about the TLM 103, thanks for sharing that unofficial info.lol
I really like how they both perform, subtle differences in each can really bring out the quality of a recording.

If you have time, check out this blind test I did ua-cam.com/video/uCscezR24Vc/v-deo.html
Thank You Bardic Brent!

Yes Audiomanmik! you got good ears!
What mic is better then that is not Neumann?
@@MidnightMiik any other great u67clones that are sub 1000?

But Beyoncé and all the other they def record on high budget mics we can’t afford right now. But we will one day 🔥 keep working!
Many people love eating big Mac does that mean that’s the great burger 🤔
Ah yes and McDonald's has sold millions of Big Macs so its all about supply and demand, and many artist demand what they think is the best microphone on the planet, thats why the U87 and all the clones of it sell.
Even tho there are many other great mics on the market, many manufacturers keep on making clones of this mic.
Oh u got a band and money Allen and heath digital mixer runs at 96khz don't need that much resolution want it phat and funky on a budget Presonus studio live 316 or series 3 32sc
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, I read all the comments below, great info!
None of these cms are close to U 87 ai. They all have different sounds. But beyond doubt they sound good.
The thing that is even more funny, is the vintage U87s sound so different from the modern one, and even no two modern units sound the same, they are like snow flakes under the microscope. lol
What are you talking about? Most of the microphones you listed are not u87 clones lol
Hey Saint Clarity, that is a great point, most neaumann clones are just a matter of opinion by the manufacture of the mic, so if they say its a clone, it becomes a clone.
Hey brother, you sound like me. Trini?
Hey Selwyn, you are 100% right !
Hoping the video helped, if not and you need a couple more to help you decide or not. I got you covered also.
Just a few of TLM vs U87.
The closest sounding mic to the u87 isnt cheap but its a lot cheaper and isnt a clone. Its the shure ksm32
TLM103 sounds like a behringer or Chinese mic from Amazon
Lol ok, that’s a first.
Thanks for your input Vadim, always great to hear other peoples perspective on things.
AkG clone Cad m179 , poorans AkG, less poor Lewitt 441 flex or 7db self noise.
67 clone Rode K2, 47 Clone wa47 jr smoother than 47 tube run the junior through the tunes tweak bottom end and you should be so close
Also Howard Stern and Christina Aguilera
Thanks for pointing that out also!
A lot of nice touches throughout this video 👍
Glad you liked it! thank you Rocco, super cool of you to take the time to say!
I’ve used the TLM103 and hated it. Very bad with plosives. The electronics are have of the sound. Not just the capsule.
The tlm 103 is not a clone... It doesnt have a transformer in it.. mic...Has its own sound...
45cm away from the mic.. wow amazing
Hey thetruth thanks for the comment, but what exactly stood out to you the most about the distance from the mic?
You got a cool accent haha where ya from
Hey thanks Clueless Kit! I am from the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago, I show a little of it in this vlog style video I just did if you care to know more. ua-cam.com/video/fLQsdB5e21A/v-deo.html
Thanks for the cool comment, now go write some awesome music !
A "clone" without the circuit or a transformer is not a clone...please revisit your definitions
the wa47 is a u47 style microphone. not a 87. This cannot be a clone. These are 2 different mic styles.
You also don t sell tomatos and give apples.
So sorry that my video angered you Tutorial, my focus was to try and help other artists find great microphones to use that are clones of the U87 so that they wont break their pockets, so Sorry once again, I stand corrected.
Thanks for letting me know my mistake.
@@TieDyeKitty I know what you were trying. Your intentions are not bad but a u47 is not a u87.
@@tutorial4779 thanks bud, I may have gotten mixed up where I read somewhere that they implemented the transistor version as a way to reduce the price of the tube version, hence the both mic being essentially the same, yes obviously once you change components you change the “sound”
What are your thoughts?
@@TieDyeKitty my thoughts are that the characteristics in sound are completely different.
The u87 is smooth and elegant. The u47 has less high end than a u87 and it also has not the elegance in the sound. It has another sound to it.
@@tutorial4779 great I hope to compare these mics one day soon, thanks for your input.
Great
Thank you Unity!
I hope one time china clone u87 original 100% next month.
Original because the branding and technology. Still dont have pure gold or crystal in original mic🤣. But original price very expensive because the branding.
hope china copy 100% use medium spec electronic component and just sell for hundred price. i will buy it..😍
You already know China cloned the mic 100%, but they can never say that they did. lol
WA 87 not 47. The wa47 is u 47 clone
Lets see what Neumann does in a few more years, it is hard to re invent yourself when you are already at the top. lol
Thanks for the comment The Lion!
Big up
Thank you Kenneth!!!!
Best of luck with your recordings.
@@TieDyeKitty I see. Thank you for reaching out. Simply doing my research trying to see what works best
Beesneez best microphones
Need an interface want Focusrite have less money audient,
Sorry bro…
It’s nothing like a clone.
A clone would sound extremely similar.
They don’t.
The tlm 103 has a totally different sound to the U87.
I’m a professional voice over artist.
I have both mics.
No offense taken Buddy, your opinion is safe with me. So in your line of work, which mics come close to the U87?
@@TieDyeKitty
The Gototoolz gtz 87 is pretty close, just a tiny bit more sibilant.
But $3000 cheaper!
The Warm87 is also a good “clone” mic for those on a smaller budget.
I actually use a Sennheiser 416 as my go to VO mic, but use the Neumann’s for music vox and instruments.
I also have an SE Electronics SE2200
that I’ve had for 18 years.
It’s gorgeous for singing, and they still make them for about $250.00
Absolute bargain!
Just buy a Mojave MA200 or MA300 and be done with it.
which one in your opinion would be the best all round mic for a self recording artist, for vocals, percussion and other instruments?
The Shure SM57 of those two Mojaves you listed above?
I will take note to try and review one day soon, thanks Ron!
It is NOT A CLONE! It's simply a different product from Nuemann.
Never Liked the TLM103, period.
Cool Ron there are those microphone that just don’t fit out recording or production style, so what do you record and what are your top 5 fav mics?
The TLM 103 has a 4db boost in the high end. It’s also prone to plosives. There are just so many better options available now. Thanks!
It’s not a clone lol what a misleading video wowwwww
Another clone -Dachman Audio DA 87SE!
Thanks Music Channel! has anyone else in the comments tried out this mic, I would love to hear your thoughts!
this is the most misleading video, but Inshoolve guessed by the way that monitor is standing.
Uh, this ain't a clone, buddy.

Why take so long getting to the point?
Thanks for your opinion Dewayne, I do try to get to the point as quickly as I can, but I also try to keep in mind that someone may need to be brought up to speed on a topic, so I try to keep a balance between the two extremes. And I do have some videos on my channel under 2 min where I get straight to the point.
