Is there already a N150 µATX mainboard, like the N100M last time around?
can you integrate subtitle transcoding into your testing?
I find that burning in subtitles has been what made my older machines struggle the most.
that´s my experience, too... even older Kaby Lake iGPU could manage more than enough streams with transcoding - but as soon as grafical subtitles had to be burned in via transcoding, only bigger i7 could keep up.
@0:09, 1:08, ... "N5105", old habits don't die, hehe... :D
But yeah, otherwise am planning to run a small DIY NAS with this chip, seems perfect for my needs.
isnt it literally the n100 but for people who dont want to buy a 5yo cpu? can you COMPARE the "new" one to it?
yes, just a slightly higher clocked N100, same for the "new" N250, N350 and N355, all just higher clocked old ADL cpu rebranded
I have a number of old blu-ray HD movies that use the VC-1 format, which traditionally has been hard to transcode since transcoding was single threaded. How does the N150 handle VC-1?
Also , how does the N150 handle forced subtitles?
What motherboard model would you recommend for this CPU?
Mine is still 'awaiting shipment'. It makes sense to me to save the money for some SSDs rather than stick with HDDs. Plus if it doesn't work reliably as a NAS then it will still be useful as a media streaming box.
I have order it on 2nd still awaiting shipment. Let me know if you have received the tracking number. At this point of time i believe they are still trying to catch up with all the orders during spring festival.
@@NetworkBook6I got an email saying it has been shipped and is enroute, last seen in Yanwen which is in S Taiwan-a shipping port I think.
I got one, so far it's okay for light tasks (internet browsing and watching movies)' ; i thought it was going to be very slow with 4K but so far it did not disappoint me.
You need to look at the igpu stats. CPU stats really don't tell the whole story
My plex journey started with the N105 last spring finding that it struggled to transcode more than 2 streams remotely then to the n305 it was slightly better but the cpu was almost always at 80% or more utilization when using plex while deluge and the arrs where running. In October I upgraded to a i5 1235U and am super happy with it and regret wasting so much time and money on the lower tiered options to begin with.
Having a CPU at 80% for its more or less most intense use-case sounds... just right? Why'd yo wanna go bigger?
@ because I wanted to be able to use VM’s and draw less power from the wall.
Upgrading accomplished both. Now I sit at under 20% with the i5 with less power usage while transcoding 3-4 streams.
Greate video! Hope you can add some AV1 samples next time.
The synology nas I’m using is struggling with a normal hvec 1MB/h file transcoding to chromecast-format with Dolby digital sound. They need more power in their system.
I running an i7 in my plex server and it still falls over streaming high bitrate 4K media.
The issue arises when trying to use Subtitles and transcode... That is a single threaded CPU workload.
It is so frustrating that they seldom list the actual hardware codec support. Having a GPU is just part of the multimedia story. Seems it has support for AV1, VP8, VP9, H.264, and H.265 but Ic ant seem to find any other detail e.g is that both encode and decode, what bit rate, HDR etc. Seems like it can natively decode AV1, but sadly, not encode.
How has the reliability and stability been on the gmktec g9? I have seen some negative comments online. The only thing holding me back
It's been reliable and runs UnRAID fine (been on for 1 week plus, so still early days). But the temps are a bit sus...
@@nascomparesthanks for the reply. I can modify the cooling system (to a degree) myself with a 3d printer and some fans. Since I don’t see an alternative releasing soon, the availability of this system and price is too good to ignore. If it is stable as you report, i am pulling the trigger tonight. I will make sure to use your links!
How has AMD processors' hw transcoding progressed? There's many one off claims of good results but I can never find any decent tests
09:17 that's the amount of RAM 🤘
why are only these not trustworthy chinese companies that built this useful boards and none from other companies? grmpf
One word: cost
If you know how much labor cost there and they also have cheaper material ( many of them made in china )
For your reference UK minimal wage was like 3-4 times higher than Shenzhen which is somewhere like 3 GBP
If you making some board you need to hire workers , and final product have to sell at a price that is affordable for your target market 😅
I don’t trust these ‘Chinese companies’ any less than alternatives; if you think corporations (or governments) in other countries are more trustworthy, you can’t have been keeping on top of the news. However, by all means keep ‘boycotting’ them, it means I’ll have more opportunity for purchase
Learned my lesson with the ugreen dxp2800. Never buying anything with emmc ever again.
What was the lesson?
@ there’s nothing in the bios allowing me to use the onboard emmc storage for a third party OS. It’s essentially locked. Maybe there’s something I’m not aware of but I’ve looked around and there’s no work around.
@@RoloSolis81 Oh. I was looking into the Ugreen nas. Apparently you have to add your own nvme drive or use a usb drive to use a diferent OS. The emmc is locked. I think NASCompares has a video on it. I was looking at the 4 bay. It's suppose to be easy but maybe not?
@ Get the Dxp4800 plus, it’s a bit more money but the on onboard memory is not soldered on like the emmc.
what happens when subtitles are needed to be transcribed as well?
4:50 potato quality there, we're using hw transcoding there, and CPU spiked to 8% there. Good job, mate... there. 😂
There, there...could be worse.
Hiding interesting content behind 'members only' is not going to work well for the popularity of this channel. Release all content and build membership first to half a million before putting any paywall. It's a niche storage channel, not a major tech review channel.
I have joined membership for early access and from what I know the video will release after a while ( days ) ?
While UA-cam gives shit pay on ads and I can skip few cups of coffee each month to support the creator 😅
@@frankwong9486UA-cam gets like 30% off the membership payments as well, which is a win win for them
I hate pay walls, but this is only timed exclusivity.
No, no it DOESN'T run on the Intel n5105 - it runs on the Intel n150 - two very, very different CPUs.
What doesn't?
@@nascompares the unit you are reviewing. n5105 and n150 - please pay attention.
@@HiltonT69 guys, he just misspoke, no need to complain. Both in the title and ob screen you can clearly see that it is about the N150, so no need to be pedantic and pretend to be offended. These reactions say more about you two than you think...
I mean..are you jumping on a misspoken sentence amidst an 18 min vid that is clearly about the N150 and no one watching this is going to think this is about anything else...what happened to make you this angry, man?
Also, cheers for the comments @DonnieX6. summed it up better than me tbh! Respect
waiting for the N355 review! :D
Apologies for the delay on this. 3x N355 solutions headed to me, but all delayed because of Chinese New Year. Expect an absolute thunderstorm if reviews on that a few other bits on the new Twin Lake series coming from me (and indeed other creators too) in the 2nd half of Feb, as delivery channels catch up!
@nascompares do you happen to know when GMKTEC will release the N350 or N355 units and their estimated prices?
@@nascompares not too worry! No reason to apologise big fella. You’re a real insight to my homelab / Nas / Server journey! Love the channel. Excited for future videos. Keep up the great work
Is N355 the sucessor to N305?
You've got your transcoding stress testing wrong, transcoding to lower bitrates is easier than transcoding in to higher bitrates 1080p and above, also no one's gonna be transcoding to 200p, also and testing on the new hevc to hevc transcoding with hdr metadata maintained?
06:06 "not megabits - megabytes, much bigger" funny you say that, right after you called 10 Gbps as "10 megabits per second"
09:13 "Chrome is utilizing 427 megabytes per second" - no, it's utilizing 427 megabytes.
09:54 "insane bit of transcoding there down to 240p" - how exactly is it insane?
you realize that coding part of the transcoding is more demanding, right?
and you are only coding to 240p
so, again, how exactly is it insane?
I was just about to respond and call you a pedant and then to try and (weakly) defend myself that I was juggling alot on screen stuff (I can only see half the screen when this is recording)..but then I saw your cat based account picture and just lost the urge to fight! So 1) you are completely correct and I dropped the ball there. And 2) that cat is ridiculously photogenic. If you took this picture, kudos! My 'cat that is definitely a dog given the way he runs around' is nice, but every picture I take make him look like a 2010 ford fiesta....
@@nascompares cat's picture is not mine, but i agree, it's very photogenic.
Just build a proper PLEX server with Nvidia GPU, network connect to my local storage server. I run it on Ubuntu over the hypervisor with passthrough. You can play anything, encode anything, transcode anything. I always transcode 4k source to 720p so I can watch it on the move, just like any streaming services. I even stream my PLEX server either through WireGuard or reverse proxy, to several family members and extended families without a hic. These mini pc just do not cut it. Want a good PLEX server, just get a Nvidia GPU with a paid (lifetime) PLEX acct.
