My dad was a garbage man. As a kid, I remember him coming home smelling like a landfill. He worked very hard to support my mom and I. He got a CDL and eventually scored a well paying local job in our hometown driving a roll off truck. His job became a lot easier since the truck he drove did most of the work. He retired from public works after almost 30 years back in 2020. Thanks for doing this video! A lot of people underestimate how hard that job is physically. People are careless and my dad would tell me stories about people throwing pieces of concrete in the cans, of all things.

It’s brutal hard work. Cigarettes. Energy drinks. Dairy Queen. People typically compare us with mailmen, cops, and UPS/Amazon delivery drivers, but we are the superior career for certain.

Wow, the concrete thing really disappoints me. Do people not realize everything they put in the can is what the garbage man has to lift at once.

Yup I worked for the trash for city of Denver for a year and they removed the steps on the back because someone got injured. So for am entire summer I was walking all the routes behind the truck. I've had so many cans that would have big ass concrete blocks hidden under stuff. Sometimes it was so heavy they machine for lifting cans couldn't even lift it and I had to help it by pushing the can up

As a 21 year old that works at a landfill since I was 19, I actually love my job. Now a days it’s barely even disgusting. They provide a locker room and showers there so I come home clean every time. It’s pretty rare that we get in direct contact with garbage too. The benefits are great and it’s unionized.
People are rude about it sometimes but they don’t know that it pays almost 25 bucks per hour.

We live in giant apartment houses and have special pipe called «musoroprovod» which impale house inside from high stages to first. F-ing garbage is falling down by this terrible system. In the communist system, I guess there wasn't any incentive to figure out how to do things better. In hindsight, a manager of some Khrushchevka could know somebody in the politburo and offer an idea,
"Why not put a giant dumpster to catch all that trash from the trash chute? Develop a truck that is designed to drop off an empty dumpster, pick up the full one, and shove the empty dumpster under the garbage chute."
Only somebody in the Party who actually did manual labor could think of stuff like that. Sadly, America's own elites are just as bad as the oligarchs in Russia now.

I used to work as a garbage collector. We collected the reusable stuff - paper and glass. Trust me - 20kgs is not the limit for some people. They can put out a bag full of books/bottles that weights 30-40kgs. Or mix it up with straight up trash. Or throw out a bigass carton box that won't even fit into the truck without folding it. Except you can't fold it, because they packed the box with more paper trash. There are also people that run after you and tell you to wait. Because it's to hard for them to remember the schedule/put out the bag outside a day before the pickup day. And it's not like you're there for 8 hours and you can go home, you work until the jobs done. So imagine if 20 people stop you for 5 minutes each, and then they wonder why you are so pissed at them.

Great video! Some good additions showing more frustrations of this job would have been them doing a pre trip inspection only to find multiple flat tires, a broken headlight, several gallons low on hydraulic fluid, tons of garbage behind the packer panel, and a dirty cab from coworkers who don’t take care of the trucks. Also adding the truck breaking down at some point during the route (significant hydraulic leak most likely) and needing to take an old crappy spare that has the same problems found during that pre trip. Also let’s not forget the angry Karen’s and the people who overfill their barrels, don’t bag their garbage, I could go on forever. I’ve been a garbage truck operator for over 3 years, I’ve seen it all. I’m not criticizing your video at all I just wanted to add some things. Thank you for making a video about this line of work.

Our garbage collection works differently in Australia. we have specially designed "wheelie bins" like a tall thing on wheels that has a coloured lid for either recycling, waste or compost. we wheel them out onto the road on different days and a truck with a mechanical arm picks them up and empties them into the back of a truck and puts them back down on the gutter (or curb). This probably happens elsewhere other than here. There is usually one of two people operating them and they don't have to leave the truck. Though nothing but respect for the people who work these jobs.

I've known a few guys who did it and even starting out they all got paid around $20-$30USD per hour with lots of 1.5-2X overtime pay and also said they'd occasionally find gold, silver, platinum, jewelry, working electronics, antiques, drugs and other things they were able to resell for an off-the-books bonus.

Today I quit my job as a garbage truck driver/collector. I did it for 2 months and is extremely hard to do it.
Breathing in dust from the stuff people throw in their garbage bags. Some of that dust being extremely dangerous. 100 or 140 stops daily . Destroying your knees from climbing up and down the truck. Extremely heavy containers that hurt your back when pushed. Maggots and repulsive smells. 10 to 12 hours of work. Sharing a truck cabin with a dude for said amount of hours. Disagreeing on when to put on the AC, stop for lunch, radio station, etc .
Impossible places for a truck to drive into to find a garbage container.
Not gonna lie the pay was excellent.

My next-door neighbor worked at the county landfill. He had nothing positive to say about it, other than it was a steady wage and he could get health insurance. The landfill was run by some outsourced corporation by the county, they cut corners everywhere safety-wise. Trucks were always getting stuck in mud or flipping over on steep grades. Many of the employees were unreliable degenerates, but rarely would anyone be fired - it's tough work and difficult to get people to show up. My neighbor spent a lot of time spraying some kind of mosquito repellant on top of the trash, and stunk like h311 so that his wife insisted he change clothes before entering the house. He caught COVID a few years ago and died without even being able to collect Social Security from this crummy job.

Right there is why public sanitation, trash pickup, and landfill management should always be directly managed and funded by municipalities (city or county) and the labor force UNIONIZED. They must meet State and Federal guidelines and they are funded and operated to that end.
OTOH, a private company will always cut corners to squeeze out a few bucks of profit for the dead weight at the top.

They throw the trash randomly in the dumpster and I see the workers have to clean the area before he moves the dumpster outside. Sometimes the dumpsters are too full and the trash falls out when they try to move the dumpster. Then the homeless come and tear all the bags open. Thank goodness for these workers.
