My grandad just died at 101. He was sunk three times in WWII, lost all his mates as they all joined up together and their ship got sunk by the Bismark. He never spoke about it. When I was younger I would ask him to tell me about the war but he just brushed it off. One day my mother told me he didn't want to relive it, he just wanted to get on with his life. Nicest man you could meet, but the horrors he must have seen...

History needs to remember these stories of regular men in extraordinary times. Reading it in a book is one thing, but seeing them speak of it makes it real.

That's what's called a "significant life event".......Never, ever forget !! The Greatest Generation. My Dad was in WWII as a medic, Africa, Italy, later Normandy. He along w/ his 3 bros. all came back. He saw the worst of it!

@@dabneyoffermein595 My Dad said he got hit w/ a piece of shrapnel in his eye so he got his PH...In the military it's "Life, limb, and eyesight" so he def. deserved it. One piece of shrapnel his a choc/toffee bar which when you eat it, the toffee stays w/ you for a week. It saved his life. My uncle was a MD in a black unit and he said they acted wild off-duty. My Dad also said the black soldiers ran when the tanks attacked. I kinda didn't blame the black soldiers for that since our anti-tank weapons didn't work to well. My Dad was my hero I just didn't realize it until much later and didn't have the chance to tell him. He was proud of me tho..then my other uncle who called me "the cream of the crop" since I was in combat w/ the 82nd Abn Div.....

My dad landed on omaha beach that morning. He was in the 147th combat engineers, 6th engineers special brigade. He never got a purple star, but he had a lot of scars from that day. Who knows, maybe your dad helped my dad? I'll always be in awe of that generation. We have much to be proud of.

If my memory serves me right it was not up until about the 3rd wave that the Americans were able to start gaining ground at Omaha. The first wave was chewed to absolute pieces with massive casualties and made near totally combat ineffective. The second wave faired a little better but also suffered massively. The whole experience must have been very sobering to the core. These men whatever anyone may think of them deserve respect they literally entered into Hell.

Omaha beach is a pretty big and wide beach, there's so many open ground, the first wave against intact mg42's machine gun nests is almost suicidal.

Mr. Fazzio , there will never be a justification for what you had to witness. I was born June 7 th 1954, I attended many memorial days but it was movies that influenced my views of war, TV shows, not the people who were maybe 30 years old and also starting families. It was much later in my life when you vets were hitting your seventies that the toll of what you men did started to be better understood. Following Memorial Day wreath laying as a scout then cadet we were always invited back to our local legion for hot chocolate and cookies.
We were too young to go into the main hall, but we could see many of the men some very drunk, crying, and that distant look. The women of the legion would many a times be seen putting a hand on a shoulder recognizing the reason for those tears was that they came home. Now I watch these videos and see how you men are affected all these years later , you keep those that passed on that day alive and your tears sure share that sorrow that no war movie ever conveyed. Thank you for allowing us to see the realty through your memories.

My dad landed on omaha beach that morning. He was in the 147th combat engineers, 6th engineers special brigade. He was on the LCI (L) US 91. As it neared the beach it struck a mine then was pummeled by german 88's. He went back to Omaha after the war was over & took a picture of the badly damaged 91, it was still in the same spot. (according to what I've found online, that was in the dog white sector) that pic is one of my prized possessions.
