Surgery as a whole tends to result in a lot of waste. 50 to 60 million pounds is spent on volatile anesthetic gases per year, but less than 2.5 of that gas is actually metabolised by the patient - the rest is vented.
This has a huge impact on our climate. Some gases are 2500 times more likely to cause global warming than carbon dioxide.
SageTech wants to remanufacture anesthetic agents. They have developed a system that captures wasted gas. The aim is to have the hospital to process the waste it produces.
The ISCF provides a boost to companies like SageTech which need extra funding to see their innovative ideas move from concept to reality. Commercialising technology is a big step towards creating a massive change and protecting the environment at the same time.

Hi, I am the research director at SageTech. Thank you for your comments. Please can I clarify that my reference to the age of various technologies is to the scavenging system and to the plenum vapouriser, not to any specific anaesthetic machine or manufacturer. Other innovations in anaesthesia machines to reduce the environmental footprint of anaesthesia are present in modern machines and our technology works with and complements these developments to fully circularise the lifecycle of anaesthetic agents.
