Well, She's always been the damsel in distress over the years, So It makes sense they've made her this way in the movie because She's been helpless for far too long
@laylamason9908 There were times where she wasn't helpless in the games: Super Mario Bros 2, Super Princess Peach, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Bros Wonder, and pretty soon Princess Peach Showtime.
Given that a number of the games have shown how much of a *powerhouse* peach can be in her own right, it's nice that the movie ran with that even while still working (fairly well) within the standard "damsel in distress" scenario.

Damn, if that last look Bowser gave Peach as she walked by doesn't scream obsessive yandere, I don't know what does! It made me cringe and squeal. He may come off goofy and lovestruck, but Bowser still tortured Toad to make Peach give in. Major props to this movie for balancing between goofy and actual evil villain. That's hard to do.

Probably my favorite part about the movie is that they actually gave Peach a backbone instead of just getting kidnapped like every mainline Mario game. Like in other games including spin-offs like the rpg games and Smash bros she’s constantly shown with magical powers yet she never uses them in the mainline games and even though she doesn’t use them here, I’m just glad they made her a person who’s actually willing to fight for her kingdom instead of just being a damsel in distress.
That's the closest we'll ever see her in that damsel in distress here. That look reeked of despair, helplessness, and resignation to the marriage since he'd kill all the Toads if that's what it took.

Basically since the Paper Mario series they retconned Bowser’s reasons for constantly abducting Peach. Originally he did because she was the only one who had the power to stop him, and release her people from his spell. But after all the times he kept kidnapping her, it wasn’t making any sense and would have been a lot easier for him to just kill her. Bowser being hopeless in love with her was logical explanation as to why he kept doing it. Although the first Super Mario Bros animated movie from 1986, which only had a formal release in Japan, did have Bowser abducting her out of hopeless unrequited love. Also an evil monster’s desire for a human woman is used a lot more in Japanese folklore than in western folklore. So maybe that was the original plot of the game.
