he bit down on a metal bar attached to the piano to hear the vibrations through his jaw. the fact that you can hear through your jaw also explains why the voice may sound different on recording. you hear your own voice with your jaw, but when it's played back you hear it with your ears and the hearing mechanisms are different, if only slightly.

I feel like this video showcases what a lot of people fail to appreciate. Beethoven went completely deaf. He could not hear a single note he played and yet he played them perfectly, and composed them perfectly. He was definitely one of the greatest composers of all time, and most certainly the most impressive composer of all time.
It's said that even though Beethoven was deaf, he technically could still hear what he was writing because of something called synesthesia. Basically, as he read/wrote the notes he could "hear" them in his head.

He was a very gifted genius. He was also a tortured soul, I think. His deafness left him as an outcast and he died because of his alcohol abuse. Such a sad ending. Long live Beethoven in the hearts and souls of music lovers everywhere!!!

I feel like this video showcases what a lot of people fail to appreciate. Beethoven went completely deaf. He could not hear a single note he played and yet he played them perfectly, and composed them perfectly. He was definitely one of the greatest composers of all time, and most certainly the most impressive composer of all time.
It's said that even though Beethoven was deaf, he technically could still hear what he was writing because of something called synesthesia. Basically, as he read/wrote the notes he could "hear" them in his head.
