Thanks for simplifying and humanising the legal requirements!! Just starting out and tbh I was rethinking doing it until I watched this. Now my enthusiasm is back 😊
Hi Lucy, I am so glad that I have helped your enthusiasm to come back! It is so daunting to begin with, especially when you see all the information in one big chunk and bits of it are in jargon that makes no sense! If you ever need help with understanding anything feel free to post a comment and I will do my best to help! Good luck :-)
I can't thank you enough for the time, generosity and expertise you've given us with this video. It's made the whole process so much easier to understand and I'm so grateful. Xxx
Thank you for this wonderfully explained video. I was in despair when researching how to sell my sell my soaps and you’ve made it all so much more understandable 🙂
Definitely feel a little less confused, anxious and overwhelmed about doing all the legal stuff. Thank you for this video! Going to binge on other videos over the weekend ❤
Thank you so much for this! It’s been extremely helpful to get me started. The Gov site is rarely easy to navigate, so you’ve saved me a lot of time working it all out!
Omg, your explanation of the recipe assessments has helped loads. I literally thought that I would have to pay £200+ per each soap lol. Its very daunting, as it costs alot before you evrn know if the product is right lol... Some very tough decisions to make. Again, thank you for sharing everything 👍
So glad it has helped you! Yes, it frustrating paying before knowing if the product is any good! We are formulating shampoo bars now and while I can test our oily hair recipe on myself (as my hair is an oily type) I have no idea how to check if my dry/frizzy hair formula is any good without first having it assessed and then handing it out for people to try and feedback on. It seems so backwards at times!
Thank you so much for this! So clear and helpful! I came back to this video numerous times to tick off what I need for my business and now I am up and running! 😊
Thank you so much for ding this video, when i got it in my head that i would love to make soaps and sell as a little kitchen table business i had no idea that there were so many hoops to jump through, so much documentation to submit and forms to fill out. I felt so overwhelmed, but I'm too stubborn to just give up especially since I REALLY feel I've found my passion in life and its soap. 🥰. Its so fulfilling. Anyway, I just couldn't find all the information of what i needed to do in the Uk to be within the law and know that i wasn't doing anything wrong. So thank you from the bottom of my heart, i feel that if i take it one step at a time it will be ok. One more question that i feel i didn't quite grasp. when it comes to listing the fragrances in my recipe, apart from the name and seller what other information do i need. For example. if i buy an EO or fragrance oil from a company, i get the name of the scent but not much else like allergen statements or IFRA statements of conformity as requested by some cosmetic assessors. Would it be better therefore to get my assessment from one of the companies that sell the actual fragrances so i wouldn't have to worry about those details? I appreciate your advice in this matter and hope i didn't ramble on too much, but I'm just so overwhelmed by it all, but hoping that this is the direction that my life needs to go to make a difference to my future. x
I enjoyed your video. I'm in the US and am impressed with the level of scrutiny y'all have concerning the sale of soap. Very informative. Thank you for your commitment ❤️
Thank you Teri. I must admit, there are times when I envy people in the US who don't have such rigorous testing - I know we have it to keep everything super safe but sometimes when I just want to change a colour or scent in a soap it is frustrating to have to pay out money to get a tiny change approved! Better safe than sorry though I suppose!
Thankyou so much for this wonderful help. Ive just started on my soap obsessives journey! But I would love to keep going and take it further, your advice is so kind and detailed. All the best to you and your business x
Thank you so much for this! I've been doing my own research and the sheer amount of preparation seems mind boggling. You doing this video has put my mind at rest that it's easy when you break it down 😃
You are welcome Darren. Yes, if you look at it as a whole it can be completely overwhelming! Breaking things down into smaller steps definitely helps it to feel easier!
Thank you for sharing this! ❤️ I was feeling a bit overwhelmed (especially with the PIF and GMP) but you answered many of my questions and gave me more confidence, I can do this! Thank you ☺️
You are welcome Roo! Don't feel overwhelmed, take it step by step and you will be fine :-) We are always here to help if you have any questions you need help with!
I actually do have a question… 🥴 How do I write the good manufacturing practice document? I have looked and looked online and I am totally confused! 🤯😵💫 I am assuming (assuming🤭) I read the GMP iso22716 standard and I copy and apply the relevant points to my company document. Is that right or have I got this totally wrong? 😱 Can I also ask what kind of support is out there to ask questions like this (apart from your lovely selves)? ☺️ I really appreciate your offer to help, thank you ☺️
Thank you so much for this video it has been very helpful, I have just started making CP soap and now looking to selling the soap. It looks very daunting when you check all the legal requirements online, this has video has made things much clearer.
You are welcome Debe and I hope it helps you! I remember being so daunted when I first read up on selling soap that I almost gave up straight away! That is why we have created this video to try and help others in that same position!
What an absolutely fantastic video, I have just made a start on filling out my assessments, I now know that I can't take a variate out or reduce it!! For example I made a peppermint & Tee Tree soap & the scent was quite strong however I left it in the recipes thinking I could reduce this once the assessment had been certified. The information on the SCPN was so helpful I will now not be daunted on my first attempt at putting in a product. Thank you so much.
I am so glad that we have helped a little Glenis. Yes, it is frustrating not to be able to lower things like fragrances if they are too strong, that is one downside to the legislation in this country. The SCPN is a little confusing at first but if you take it slowly it should make sense and I am sure you will get through it :-)
Thank you for the very important information, I was stagnant on my one, I have been doing soap for a long time for family use, but never try to take the next step which is selling to others. Thank you verimuch
Thank you for this video. It is a great help and i have made a lot of notes from this video. Also many of us will listen to the very end of your videos because they are extremely informative. We need facts to get started and you have helped many of us to begin our businesses legally. Thanks again x
I wasn't able to leave a comment on ur homepage. Bur i wanted to let you know that the soap arrived here in Lyon/France today and my mailbox scented already so nice when i opened it. I love your soaps, especially the black plum&rhubarb. I wanted ti send you a big thank you and the best wishes for everything. Your soaps are gorgeous. Thank you for this good work. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for letting us know they have reached you safely and for such kind comments! I am so glad that you like the soaps (The Black Plum is a really gorgeous smell isn't it!) I am sending you a big hug too for supporting our small business and thank you :-)
May I ask if I would require a GMP if I’m producing soap from my kitchen in small batches for the occasional market stall? I would be keeping all records as you mention but suddenly felt that I would not have a “manufacturing process” as a larger soap maker would have, I.e. with staff, machinery etc. Can you advise your thoughts please
Great video with loads of useful information, thank you. I am just experimenting and making soap for own use at the moment but will definitely come back to this if I decide to sell in the future.
fabulously presented. Informative and down to Earth. Thanks for sharing your experience. Thinking of using the same insurer as you and the same assessors too. It will be worth it having my CPSR , GMP and registering with the Government portal thing should I decide to go into small business . Looking forward to watching more on your channel.
Thank you so much for your video. I am new to the world of soap making and you have helped me with all the legal side of things. I wouldn't have otherwise know where to begin. Thanks again
Thanks for going through all this. It was quite interesting to learn how the UK handles soaps. In the US, it's pretty much "Try not to kill too many people with your recipe." ;)
This is so helpful since im planning to try and make and then sell soap here. Im just starting out but im also from the US so this is so interesting to learn. (I plan to immigrate forever)
thank you very much for this very comprehensive video!!! As other, I've struggled to find details, and when I started to look into certifying my soap, I almost gave up instantly. But you breaking it down, actually allowed me to envision the process a lot better and de-dramatised it all. One thing I'm still confused about though, is, in order to assess good practice, premisses and equipment, does someone physically comes to check all that or is it based on pictures, good words? what happens there? thanks again very much for taking the time to make such a informative video. ☺️
Thank you so much for taking the time to run through all of this. I wasn't sure with the 'variations' on an assessment so it was great to see your visual explanation as well as the forms. When you upload to the UK portal, do you have to do this for every single batch please - I'm guessing so, but I'm not sure? PS - Would I need to put my full address on bars of soap / lip balms etc, or is it just my website or just my home postcode please? It's so hard when you order things from Etsy (I ordered a lip balm) and there's no label on it whatsoever...however, as long as we follow the legal requirements - at least we're covered 'if' something went wrong. It's best to have a clear conscience :). Could I ask where you buy your "Biolefin" clear film from please? Is it biodegradable shrink wrap? Or just something you cold wrap around your soaps etc please, like Clingfilm. Liked and subscribed and I watched every second of your video. I kept pausing it to make notes but I just appreciated you taking the time to put it all together for us, thank you (apologies for all the questions) x
Thank you so much for explaining everything so clearly! I was overwhelmed and really put off even thinking about selling but you’ve reassured me to actually consider it ❤
I am so glad! Definitely consider selling, the legalities are a lot of work to get your head round at first, but once you know what you are doing it becomes relatively simple and definitely worth it!
Thank you so much for this as its a minefield it will really help with me starting out, re the PIF is there an example of one please? or does it not matter how it looks its more of the information that is required within.
Thank you so much for all this information! I was actually looking for this information, as I'm planning to start selling my soaps, and your video came up on my youtube as I was looking :) Love your videos, Thank you xx
Love that you've put this up ☺ its answered a lot of questions I had! I'm struggling to know what scales to buy, iv looked at loads and only a few have the words trade approved but they seem to be for grocery shops 🤔
Hi Si, I know, choosing scales can be an absolute minefield! County Scales online offer trade approved options and have quite a wide range available :-)
Thank you so much. I'm tentatively researching for lip balms and soap filled sponges and finding the right info for the UK on Google is a minefield. Very detailed and well presented.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expeience, i am about to get some recipes assessed and founf all of this very helpful, i had scales, but didnt know i was required by law to only use trade approved, so many thanks. ALL very helpful, thank you xx
You are very welcome Amanda and I am glad you found it all helpful. Good luck with your assessments and do let me know if/when you are selling your soaps - I always love to try other peoples handmade creations too! :-)
Two questions; Can I make soap in a room that is used for laundry ? Do the oils have to be from a soap ingredients supplier, or can I use supermarket oils? Thank you so much x
Hi, I'm filling I my assessment form with soaposh. I previously asked you about water and you said you don't use distilled water, as your tap water is good. So is ours and I would like to use it I my soaps, but what do you put on the assessesment for it? As they can't test our water 🤷♀️ Thanks for your help.
This is so comprehensive. Many thanks! Do you know if we need to include MSDS for food colouring, oils and pure essential oils in CPSR applications? I fell in love with the John Lewis blue food colouring but it's not a good idea to tie it to John lewis who may change anytime, right?
Thanks a lot for explanation 😊, I have a question, on the safety report, you defined one soap type (lavender) how many soap designs you can make per one report? It looks so costly to have a report per soap design
This is really very super helpful, thanks so much 😍 Looking up INCI names, they look like Latin in origin, usually what chemists use, so that makes sense
Thank you so much. This bit has scared the living daylights out me. I love the practical side of making soap but I’m always scared of the legal side. You broke this down well so I’m a little less intimidated. 👍🙈😄 what I didn’t understand is do I have to do a separate for the additional ingredients. For instance if my base oil , water and lye are all the same but I would like to make a different scent or colour etc. or is that covered in my variations? I’m finding that a bit mind boggling
Just come across your excellent informative video. I have been toying with the idea for quite some time now, but every time I have gone int the legalities, it has completely thrown and overwhelmed me, so I have put it on the back burner once again. However, after listening to your amazing account, and the way you have broken it down, Im pretty sure that I can do it, and im pretty excited about that - so, thank you so much. You know when you mentioned the first assessment that the chemist does for you, when you enter the gram weight of each ingredient, is that per bar ir per batch please? thank you soooo much. have subscribed...Terry
We're starting a small soap business to supply a few shops locally, and are really struggling on how to formulate the GMP document. I see you link the government website, but do you have any resources or templates for small scale handmade soap businesses that we can use as a template and modify accordingly? We're finding it very confusing! Thanks for providing us with great videos on running your business!
Thanks so much for this, it has cleared up some major issues for me but there are a few things that I hope you can help with? What is the deal regarding COAs for ingredients? I have been using "food grade" oils because frankly they are available in higher quality than those from cosmetic supply companies but very few of the food retailers can provide COAs. Is a batch number from the original packaging good enough? How do you deal with solid ingredients on your CPSR submissions? Like dried chamomile flowers for example, do they need to be assessed in the same manner as the oils and does the retailer matter? What about variations in oils? If I used raw coconut oil in recipe A and deodorised coconut oil in recipe B would I require seperate CPSRs for each to account for this or are they both covered by the same CPSR? Hmm, sorry to keep going on, just one last one. Some of my recipes I make both cold and hot process. The ingredients may be identical but the superfat in the cold will be a mix of the base oils where as in the hot I will choose which oil to hold back as the superfat. Do I need seperate CPSRs for these bars? Thanks again, I hope you can help with my questions, this really is a bureaucratic monstrosity of a system.
You are welcome Oksanna, we do have plans for videos dedicated to both GMP and PIF files for the future (not quite sure when though as they will take a little while to plan out!)
Hi , can you help? I’m starting to fill out my assessments but I’m abit confused with fragrance oil usage rate! I know they all have different rates but I’ve seen Karen at Eden secret using 5 o/o and tiggy at future primitive using 2-3 o/o . I have flexi from Soaposh and the fragrance load is 2 o/o 😫 what should I put down on my assessments ?? Thanks so much for your videos .
Thanks for the great video. I doubt I'd be able to go through this process without your video! I'm wading through doing the safety reports and I'm puzzled about the MSDS for basic ingredients like Olive oil, coconut oil. The supermarkets where I buy my oil don't release their data, but they are much cheaper than purchasing from a specialist soap supplier. So, I was wondering if there was a way around this that you could advise? 🤔
Great video, really helped me understand. My biggest confusion is the variants, I have a base recipe, do I have to adjust the percentage of the base formula ingredients when adding the variants, to make room for them? or are they added on top of the whole base recipie?
Hi Carl, The total of 100% for ingredients will include the base recipe and the variant ingredients. Therefore if you are writing your recipe in percentages you will need to adjust the base to accommodate these. All of our safety assessments have actually allowed us to give our formulation in grams rather than %, which works well for us as it is easier when different variations have slightly different amounts in them. All I then do is manually convert it back to % if I want to scale the recipe.
Can you do a report if you are making your soap with a melt & pour base? I'm guessing you just include the ingredients that are in the melt & pour base?
Thank you so much for this!! So if I wanted to make soap with different bases such as one soap 100% olive oil and another with different oils I would need to get 2 Cosmetic Product Safety Reports done?
Thank you Anne, very helpful. One thing i still get confused about is the soap formulation. Do we use the quantitative formulation that includes the sodium hydroxide with the additional ingredients or the final product ingredient list without the sodium hydroxide to upload on the Uk cosmetic portal? Many thanks in advance
A bit late to the party, but...This video was so helpful! Thank you! I have been feeling very overwhelmed by everything that goes into this. In regards to the CPSR and the INCI/CI's of ingredients; I have been having trouble finding the INCI name for fragrance oils. I asked the place I will be getting the report done where to find it and they just said "in the documentation for it", but I'm not seeing anything jumping out at me and I wondered if you would be able to expand more in where to find them, please? The main 2 companies I was looking at was The Soap Kitchen and Craftovator. Thank you again!
Hello and thank you for your comment :-) The INCI name for a fragrance oil is simply "Parfum", that will apply to any fragrance oils (not essential oils) that you use. You will still need to declare any allergens that are present above the allowable lmit and those can be found by requesting the allergen documentation for the individual fragrances that you are using (your fragrance oil suppliers should have no problem making these available to you, if they do, buy from somewhere else!)
Hello, you are correct. If you are claiming that your product has an effect other than simply cleansing then you do need to provide proof of this in your PIF. We don't claim any effects of our soap other than to clean, so we don't have this section in our PIF.
Glad to hear that we have managed to help a little Leonie. Take things one step at a time and I promise you will soon be wondering what you were worried about! (I know this, as when we first started it completely overwhelmed us too!) Feel free to pop a comment up if you ever do need help or advice on anything :-)
Thank you soo much for the detailed video..🙏🏾My question is what if I am using African products with African only names sort out the African way how would I get the INCA name or safety report..? Thank you
Thanks for simplifying and humanising the legal requirements!! Just starting out and tbh I was rethinking doing it until I watched this. Now my enthusiasm is back 😊

Hi Si, I know, choosing scales can be an absolute minefield! County Scales online offer trade approved options and have quite a wide range available :-)
@@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany Thats a massive help thank you 😊
Thank you so much.
Thank you, I will happily send you a few samples :) xx
Two questions; Can I make soap in a room that is used for laundry ? Do the oils have to be from a soap ingredients supplier, or can I use supermarket oils? Thank you so much x
Hi, I'm filling I my assessment form with soaposh.
I previously asked you about water and you said you don't use distilled water, as your tap water is good. So is ours and I would like to use it I my soaps, but what do you put on the assessesment for it? As they can't test our water 🤷♀️
Thanks for your help.
QUESTION: What SIC codes do you use for registering a company as yours please? Great video. Thanks.
This is so comprehensive. Many thanks! Do you know if we need to include MSDS for food colouring, oils and pure essential oils in CPSR applications? I fell in love with the John Lewis blue food colouring but it's not a good idea to tie it to John lewis who may change anytime, right?
Fantastic video. Thank you for your expertise and great video. Really informative. Good luck in your business development.
Thanks a lot for explanation 😊, I have a question, on the safety report, you defined one soap type (lavender) how many soap designs you can make per one report? It looks so costly to have a report per soap design
This is so good of you. I've started soapmaking but was curious what it took. 😊
hello does this also apply to laundry soap for instance? such as old fashioned lye soap for stain removal
This is really very super helpful, thanks so much 😍 Looking up INCI names, they look like Latin in origin, usually what chemists use, so that makes sense
Great video! So many ppl ask these questions A LOT.
Thank you! Yes, they are common questions for people new to soap making, so I thought I would try and help a little!
Thank you so much for this video. Its a mind-boggling process which you've explained so well.😊
This is amazing! ild love to know more about labelling... Whats needed and whats not...
hi, the format has changed within the portal it seems. Will you do an updated video sometime? It would be greatly appreciated.
love your videos! i have watched about 40 in the last 2 days. thanks so much for all of your guidance
Thank you Helen! So glad that you are enjoying our videos, 40 in 2 days? Even I couldn't watch myself that often! :-D
Thank you for the advice. Do the assessor(S) visit your premises or just check your submitted recipes. It’s expensive now…
Thanks for sharing this information. Very useful 😊
You're a truly gifted presenter. Thank you for this!
You are very welcome, thank you :-)
Just come across your excellent informative video.
I love it, thank you. TBH, you have certainly helped me before i start out.
Great video. Q: Are there any updates? Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. All the best for a healthy , happy and prosperous 2023 🌷🙏
This is very helpful! Thanks a lot!
Could you please make a video dedicated to GMP ? :)
You are welcome Oksanna, we do have plans for videos dedicated to both GMP and PIF files for the future (not quite sure when though as they will take a little while to plan out!)
I made it to the end and it was very very useful. Thank you
Is the recipe you put in the SCPN your base recipe?
Super excited about this one. Going to get my breakfast and take notes. thank you so much for sharing your journey with us/me.😊😊💞💕💯
You are very welcome Stella. I hope you found it useful!
@@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany thankyou so much for the help, I appreciate you taking the time to reply 🙂
wow this is extremely helpful so thank you so much
Can you do a report if you are making your soap with a melt & pour base? I'm guessing you just include the ingredients that are in the melt & pour base?
Absolutely amazing this is so so so helpful, thank you so much for making this video
Wow THANK YOU this is just what I’ve been looking for xx
Thank you so much for this!! So if I wanted to make soap with different bases such as one soap 100% olive oil and another with different oils I would need to get 2 Cosmetic Product Safety Reports done?
Thank you so much for this. As a newbie it helps so much.
Can you please also guide on the sequence of all of these steps. Which things should be done first and so on ?
Get your ingredients etc written down then call for assessment 👍🏽 they’ll help you too
thank you for this! how much do you think you have had to spend to get all the legal requirements sorted?
Hi I havent watched all of the vid yet. Please help me understand the thing about your allowed 8 variations. I'm still in the experimental stage.
Final product as there is no trace of lye in final mix, for example olive oils and lye would end is as sodium olivate.
This is so helpful, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
Thank you, very informative and pleasant to listen to.
Hi thank you for this video. However, do you need to add every batch of the same soap on SCPN?
Thank you for this video it's so helpful. Where can I buy trade-approved scales please ? and how do I know of they are trade-approved?
Do I need the report done if I'm using a melt and pour base from a company?
Hi, thank you for the video. However I noticed you haven't mentioned the evidence of the claimed effect on the product information file ?
Hello, you are correct. If you are claiming that your product has an effect other than simply cleansing then you do need to provide proof of this in your PIF. We don't claim any effects of our soap other than to clean, so we don't have this section in our PIF.
Hi could you give me some more advice on places to get these items , i am trying to set a small business up
Thank you St⭐️Rs for being so informative and helpful. Without you guys I wouldn’t have known about this. It will help a lot on the journey.
🌸⭐️🌸
Who do you have your cpsr with please Anne
Thank you , I'm feeling slightly less terrified and overwhelmed by all this....slightly.
Thank you
You are an absolute God send !! Thank you ❤
Thank you :-)
Thank you so much! You were incredibly helpful and easily followed ;)
thank you !!! i watched to the end. you are fantastic !
do soaps still need a CLP for the fragrance oil like it does on candles and melts? thanks xx
No, they don't need a clp thankfully!
