  • “If you’re going to build a time machine... why not do it with some style?” Our recent volunteer work blitz made short work of a massive to-do list in our shop, with great effort invested in preparing our new head-end power car for the installation of two diesel generators. This car power our expanding passenger train fleet and future excursion trains. Thanks to the 30-plus volunteers who kept our shop humming with this and dozens of other projects last weekend!

    Seeing railroaders at work is never NOT satisfying. Thank you Fort Wayne for preserving railroad history, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for you guys and 765.

    Looking great. Will there be an open house this year to view the power car?

      We are planning an open house, but the power car may be busy powering a train!

    Could the power car potentially power PTC controls for 765 as well as the coaches or is the power car only for the passenger cars? I ask because sure UP 4014 is equipped with PTC but it uses a helper locomotive to power its PTC controls. I was wondering if the same could be done with a power car.

    • @fortwaynerailroad
      @fortwaynerailroad  Рік тому +5

      It's less a power issue and more the internal components, hardware, software, etc that are necessary for PTC. 4014 doesn't use the electricity from the trailing unit, but connects to the entire system already set up in the unit.

      The way 4014 does it is that the PTC system remains entirely in the diesel, but is programmed to show the steam consist as cars ahead of the locomotive. An extra operator interface for the system is then mounted on 4014 so the driver can interact with it.
      Installing a PTC system from scratch on anything vintage quickly becomes nontrivial and highly expensive. But one day it will start to be done so that mainline steam can run without a modern escort.

      @@fortwaynerailroad And where exactly will 765 be running on besides the Indiana Northeastern Railroad, what about the Age of Steam Roundhouse or Reading & Northern Railroad and do a possible doubleheader with either 2102 or reunite the 765 with both 611 and 1225?

    • @regularguy7266
      @regularguy7266 Рік тому +1

      @Brian Falzon the Indiana Northeastern Railroad is the only railroad 765 will operate on this year, but it will be one of its busiest seasons in years. Fort Wayne has said that 2024 presents itself with a lot more operating opportunities they are considering. As for the railroads you mention, I feel that it is better if locomotives run on their own different railroads with VERY occassional visits, as some regions in the country need more steam operations to keep the history of this nation alive compared to other already established steam railroad operations such as Strasburg. Plus, maybe some railroads are more fit for certain locomotives than others. It's not that 765 can't visit these railroads, it's the fact that it's not really neccassary or the most practical to do so.
